Sorry, all.

Got part of a memory that is just itching me to distraction.

I remember rectangular unit bases with holes to plug figures into, but the figs had beads on the underside of each built-in base. I *think* there were cards for the unit bases with holes, that you could arrange figures into the units.

This has got me stumped. It can’t be ASOIAF as there is no bead to plug into the sabot bases. It also can’t be Battle Lore, which I initially thought of, which doesn’t even have trays, unless they were introduced in the second edition. (I can’t see why they would have been, honestly).

FWIW however, I got the David Crosby reference, but I doubt that helps.

It looked really promising at first.  I liked the concept in theory.  The rules were interesting, and they took a lot of advantage of the whole pluggable figures and base as part of it (reforming units mid-game).

However, the quality of the miniatures was... sub par, the variety in the armies was a bit underwhelming, and the business practices around it were a little strange, including having to pay a monthly fee to be in their "Centurion Club" in order to purchase special extra miniatures (I suppose a presage of the current trend of microtransactions and subscriptions for everything).

It died an ignoble death within a year or so.

All you say is true, though a friend gave me a pair of dragons that weren't too bad.

That said, I saw an eBay 'unkown' fig sale that had me thinking of the game, and 'what the tophet was that game called?'
