Photos of a short Conan game
« on: July 18, 2010, 07:45:03 PM »
Björn and I have just been playtesting a few rules for a fantasy skirmish game I came up with. We decided to try out a little scenario about Conan and a few friends searching for a way through some jungle in search of an ancient treasure. Unfortunately, a gang of Hyrcanians lead by their leader Baruk had pretty much the same idea. Both groups had to find clues about the direction by discovering ancient roadmarkers in the form of statues.

This is the gaming table.

Here we have the two groups moving on the board. Conan's friends are at the top.

Conan's potentially soon to be ex-girlfriend called Keisha (seen in the murky background holding a bow) managed to land the first kill of the day by taking out a Hyrcanian fighter.

The Hyrcanian leader Baruk manages to find the first of three clues.

Another statue the Hyrcanians hoped to find turns out to be some horrifying skull shrine that doesn't do much but sending the fear of gods into the Hyrcanians. Note Conan's approach in the foreground...

Conan strikes with the speed of a leopard, dispatching two enemies with ease. In the Background you see Julan, one of his friend's approaching to have a look at a potential next clue.

"Die Cymerian dog!" Baruk charged the northman to avenge his two followers. He actually managed to wound Conan fairly bad... Not that the Cimerian was impressed. Far from it.

After the last clues was discovered by Julan, he and Berul, another friend of Conan's charged into the fightbetween the leaders. A single Hyrcanina swordsmen managed to come to his leader's aid.

Try as they might, they Hyrcanians were no match for the powerful barbarian and his friends. In the end Only one Hyrcanian escaped while our heroes found their way to untold riches...

Thus ends our little Conan adventure... Anyway, it was a lot of fun and we certainly found lots of little things to do better in the rules. When they are finished, I'll let you know.

Another good looking fantasy skirmish. I bought a Conan figure a little while ago for some reason (I don't seem to be able to paint fantasy miniatures at the moment but I keep buying the odd one just in case) so I'd be interested in seeing the final rules.
Conan's not fantasy though is he, I'm sure he's historical ;)

He doesn't look that short to me, well not by comparison anyway.  :)

Conan's not fantasy though is he, I'm sure he's historical

He is: I can trace my ancestry back directly to him (on my mother's side).

Fun looking game, by the way!

Great terrain and models.  Conan is sword-and-sorcery, although, technically, King Kull was the protagonist in the first sword-and-sorcery story "The Shadow Kingdom."  Stop what you are doing and go read it if you have not.  Since the first Conan story "The Phoenix on the Sword" was a re-write of the unsold Kull tale "By This Axe I Rule", and they are all by the same author, it is the same tree, different branch.

Howard's original spelling of Hyrcanian?  Priceless.

Piss on Arnold, Robert would be proud of that.

That was a good game. I liked the combat rules both close and ranged.
It is actually not a Conan game but a fantasy game. The combined combat and skill system allows you to create fast and heroic combat results that are very suitable for Sword and Sorcery. Jump in, one blow - two down. Just like in the stories.
We will do more play testing. Right after the game I tried to convince Lars to play "The Bloodstained God"  ;)

Nice photo's and looked like a fun game. As a kid I never saw anything incongruous in reading so called ‘pulp’ Conan stories by RE Howard next to more high brow (but equally great in its own style) Tolkien. I owe the big Cimmerian a huge debt because without him (and Bilbo) I would never have got into D&D and from there into the wider world of gaming and painting.
