If you are modelling streets in the Michigan or SW Ontario area, you will need to put in huge potholes that are probably deeper than the thickness of the board you are using!

This i sfantastic.  I have been looking for a good method to make city streets for my Supers and moderns.  I wanted easy and modular, this looks like it fills the bill.  I'll be trying this soon. Thanks so much.

well, you can do 2 things in return:
1) post here your works with this method (so i can upload on my site!)
2) spread the word that a new site is growing in the horizon of the modelling sites - mine! :D
seriously, i'm being active for less than a week.... in 1 or 2 years i hope to become more known! ;) and you can help me!!! :P

it's the standard base that comes with most figures :

thanks zizi!

@supervike
actually i don't know the simplier method for a street pattern on a base, but... can't you just texture it with some sanding paper and then paint it as i did? :)

That is a great tutorial; quick, easy and produces nice results. A definite "must try soon" technique. Thanks for sharing.

Black sandpaper is indeed an excellent source for ashphalt surfaces.

Really liked this tutorial and gave it a shot last night. Seemed to work well but I have a question.

What is the tool you are using to make the initial lines? I'm using the sharp end of a compass to score my lines and Emery boards to sand them. Some of them are still lacking a little definition, any suggestions or just keep going over them? I've thought about moving to a nail to get a little wider line. Haven't tried the wire brush part yet, does that help with the texture?

well, the carving tool is a tool i bought in japan, i don't know the exact name!

i quite like it, since you can use it with a really firm movement, but a compass point or a nail on a brush stick will work as well!

i suggest you to star the lines with a cutter, and then to cut with two angolations to make the hole wider - at least the main lines.
the metal brush is quite nice to accentuate the grain of the mdf, and to remove any "fur" on the edge of the cuts!

i quite like that, but a sanding paper should work as well!

i want your photos when finished!!! =)

Black sandpaper is indeed an excellent source for ashphalt surfaces.
yep, it is, i used it a lot, for other project!
i love the fine and regular texture that it gives, but if you want to make concrete blocks you can't make nice cracks on it... :)

good luck, i'll wait here! ;)

Looks like it may be a tool typically used for making etchings:

wow, THAT'S intresting!
I already own one, but i suggest to take some!

actually mine has a different shape, the point is thinner, so you can use it for making holes or simliar... maybe this other one is just good for glass or other..

the search will continue!!
