Building some terrain for African VSF
« on: December 12, 2011, 09:15:16 PM »
Since we moved our VSF campaign to Africa I have been wanting to do some terrain, but I didn't realy know how to start.

I have seen the new Empress Rorke's Drift set and I really want it, but I can't find room in the budget for the next many months.

So when I saw Matakishis thread about making his own building from Rorke's Drift I thought I would give et a go too.

I chose some other materials, mostly based on what I had and could use free. Some thick cardboard, some matches, glue and a knife.

I started by doing the exterior shell after Matakishis "how to" but I soon found out that I would want to have interior rooms too, for the games I will be playing.

I found this drawing:

But since I am not going to be gaming Rorke's Drift I decided to alter the layout of the building a bit, and already while following Matakishis instructions I lost the historical correct layout anyway.

So this is what I managed to do today:

If this thread should be in Workbench I hope some admin can move it, I decided to put it here as it will be used for our upcoming VSF gaming in Africa.

Thanks, it will probably not be up to your standard and durability, but it will probably do for now.

This is my first time building any larger buildings for gaming, so I am also learning as I go along.

It's looking good, I am happy for it to stay here unless anyone else has an objection in which case I will gladly move it. :)

If anyone objects they have far too much time on their hands. :) Looking good Jonas. I'm looking forward to updates. African VSF has loads of possibility!

Thanks for the comments, I won't have time to continue today, but hopefully I get the next couple of steps done before the weekend.

ok, I didn't manage to get more done before the weekend, but I have been working a bit yesterday and today.

This is how far I am now.

I have made doors and windows with matches, but no shutters this time.

Roof is teddybeer fabric and needs glue and paint.

The building has been basecoated black, even though I was advised against it, but I will use some colours in between before I have a go with the final layer of white.

Anyway, this is my first attempt on building anything like this, so I learn as I go along and so far I am mostly satisfied with the result.

Great Job!!!!!!!!  Looking forward to final product. I am actually in the process of doing a Boer VSF army. Thanks

I think perhaps you should have cut that fur with a knife on the backside so the edge wouldn't look that straight,.

Maybe it won't show when you've soaked it with PVA and paint.  :)

Yeah, I thought about that, but only after I saw the picture, when looking on it, in real life, I doesn't look that odd.

I hope it will look fine when it is done. There is also a bit of teddy left for the missing backhouse, but I need some of that tile adhesive to put structure on that one too.

Well we must gather again another time.

This looks great! The teddy bear fur really adds to the roof and will be even better when you can cut it down a bit. I could see this being in Africa. What color are you painting the exterior?

I am painting the building white(ish) with brown wooden door and window frames. The roof will be painted in some dark brown colours.

I couldn't sleep last night, so I gave the house a basecoat of bone colour and the roof was given watered down glue yesterday and has been drying over night.

Unfortunately I can't continue right now, since I had to clear the livingroom for a guest of my wife. But hopefully I can do the next steps and take some photos tomorrow.

One thing I have to remember for next building, is to draw marks for doors and windows with a pencil instead of a pen. Somehow the pen lines show through both the black undercoat and the bone colour. This is not a problem on the outside since it got tile adhesive, but they are noticeale on the inside,  I guess time will tell if it matters or not.
