Actually, that's a lie - I have loved Tolkien since I was old enough to appreciate him, and also loved the Peter Jackson films.

Well, that's nice. I was not sure, since I have not seen you do much fantasy. Anyway, your style translate superwell to LotR.

Btw, we have to thank to Richard that Tolkien mess, actually I wanted something else for the Round 5  :)

And with the novels, I prefer The Hobbit to LoTR trilogy.
Wholeheartedly agree. It's so bloody hard to get past that first half of the Fellowship.

I actually prefer the LOTR movies to the books, as much of the annoying singing and carrying on have been axed. Then again, shield surfing elves and tossing-aversed dwarves don't help the movie's case.

With the Hobbit I'm sure the roles will be reversed as I love the book and have read it many times since I was a wee li'l chap playing the text adventure on my speccy. =) Don't think I ever got out of the elves' prison and into those barrels.

I'm a bit of a Tolkien nut,so thankyou Richard :) The Silmarillion is one of my favourite books (hence my entry,it wasn't my first choice for a scene though,it was going to be the abduction of Luthien which possibly proves that I am a tosser :`),it has and perhaps always will be my little escape. Not sure why? Enjoyed LOTRs and  the Hobbit, read the Silmarillion and whoa! I guess the stories, just resonate with me.Sounds a bit twee, but there it is.  ;)

I think its often a bit of a challenge to work a bonus round theme into painting something I want to paint. But I like the challenge. This season, the old lead theme was no challenge at all for me (but I absolutely LOVED looking at all the entries!) but the Tolkien theme was a bit more difficult. I do have a bunch of LOTR figures lying around: the plastics from the first boxed game and a bunch of Gondorians and Rohan spearmen and corsairs from Black Tree Design. None of these really tickled me so I decided it would be a good time to paint up some more old Citadel, and so I did.

I never managed to finish The fellowship of the ring (let alone The two towers and Return of the king) but I did enjoy the movies and I loved reading the hobbit. I wouldn't call myself a Tolkien nut at all but I can't say I don't like it. In the end I'm pleased with the models I painted and I think it's also nice to see all the different models on showcase.

Round 10 is another challenge though I already have one team done, but I would still like to include a ship and some opponents.

Let me see the banners fly

I loved the books and enjoyed the movies so painting a few LOTR figures wasn't too hard.  My kids & my wife have no interest in reading the books but watch all of the movies back to back every school break the last few years.  I wander in for the battle scenes usually.

I wasn't super crazy about the Tolkien theme, mainly because it is the only round I had to buy figures for. Everything else has been genuine lead pile reduction. That said, I enjoyed that round- it led me to reading The Hobbit again after at least 25 years, watching the animated feature, and actually wanting to try and figure out a way to work my figures into a game by the end of it :)

Some shocking statistics:

33 of 46 entries were on theme. (~72%)
Of those entries, 18 were GW (~55%), 10 were non-GW (~30%) and 5 were 10mm entries from Copplestone (~15%)

So, about 40% of all entries were from the same manufacturer and line. Most of those were current edition LOTR figs, I think 3 or 4 used the old 80s models.

Amazing, isn't it. :o

Or maybe not - don't know what my point with this is, but I'm fairly certain that most bonus rounds don't see such a concentration of manufacturers.

I'm not grousing over the fact I had to paint GW fantasy stuff (since that's my niche anyways), but I didn't get to see much of the regular variety. Looking forward to the round 10 theme now, it ought to be a bit more varied. I don't mind GW, I don't mind LOTR or fantasy and I don't themes in general. I just don't think this particular theme was open enough to interpretation.

Also, upon reviewing all the entries I came to the conclusion that we're all quite awesome for painting such great entries. Huzzah! =)

Thanks for compiling those stats, I was really curious about that. I presumed it would be mostly GW because of availability and scale of the range (plus they're nice figures), Mithril, and a smattering of Copplestone.

Surprisingly enough I only spotted one Mithril entry. Really thought (and hoped, they're ace) there would be more! My own Mithril minis are from "back then" and were lugged around in a bag with all my roleplaying stuff so they're busted up good and proper. =)

I was considering painting up some Tre Manor Reaper orcs out of the pile to enter, as that is as close as I have to LOTR left, but after all that debate as to what is "allowed" , I just said to hell with the idea. That and the fact that I wanted them to be green to go w/ my others!

For the special rounds this time I have opted to ask some (virtual) friends to supply the figures I need.  Someone happily supplied the minis for my LoTR entry and another bloke has supplied one team for Round 10...I've only had to purchase 5 figures myself.  This way they get some painted figures and I don't have to spend $ on figures that I don't really "need".  These are fun rounds and force people out of their comfort zone which I think is a good thing.

Cheers,

Blue

Felt a bit like that when I was voting.
I was going to get some dwarves and paint up a hobbit scene with a dragon I have been wanting to paint for a while. But a lack of funds caused a rethink. In the end I went to my brothers long forgotten lead pile and found a load of the 80s citadel LOTR minis, there were a load more but no enemies so just went with my favourites out of the bunch.

I have to say I really love some of the 10mm stuff that has popped up!
Saving the last bullet... just in case.

See my wonderful BLOG of stuff!

I have found that many of my gaming friends are willing to let me paint their figures for an LPL entry.  :D

I was going to put in my 1980's TSR LotR set, but didn't have time to strip and repaint them, not to mention I'd have to sculpt a new axe and hands for Gimli, (They have been lost and redone 3 or more times and are gone again)
