B&W Zombies for Akula's Rules
« on: 17 August 2012, 04:10:29 AM »
I started a thread in Future Wars about some zeds and I recently thought that it should have gone here. ( Old thread http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=41549.0 ) So here is the new thread about my zeds.

One of the features of Akula's Rules is that there are some mobile spawn points, hoardes, that travel around the table.  You are supposed to model large bases of zeds that are indestructable.  Some folks put 20+ zeds on a base to show this, but I can't bring myself to pop that many zeds on a base permenantally, so I've created some bases to fill this need and allow me to still use the z's individually as the needs may be.

My mobile hoard.

So I basically did this:

1. I have some 90mm round bases that I use for my trees
2. I bought some magnetic sheets and cut them to fit the round large base, stuck it on top
3. put seven z's on the base (they are based on washers, so they stick) and painted on glue between them
4. sprinkled sand on the glue with the z's still on the base
5. remove z's and allow glue to dry, then paint over top of glue/sand mix to further adhere it to the base
6. spray paint base with dark color as primer
7. paint with craft paint (cheap) that is close to my more expensive paint I use on bases
8. Flock like normal

Here is the base without z's on it

I've got lots of zed's waiting to be based!

I've had a few questions about why the zombies are black and white and everything else is colored.  I've had these zombies for a year and have only painted about 20 of them.  Then I saw a thread on here where a guy had done what I've done and turned out loads of zombies quickly and best of all, I love the effect!  Now I paint VERY SLOWLY, about 2 hours for a 28mm individual and maybe an hour apiece if I'm painting a group of 4-6 figures with uniforms.  So if I want a load of zombies (150+) it would be a long time before I got them on the table.  I have a regular job (teacher), I teach one college class a week as well, I do web design a few nights a week, and just started a miniatures company.  Oh, and a lovely wife, one eight year old, and two four year olds that need lots of attention. So, black and white zombies are a compromise that I'm willing to live with, and even like.  :)

I'm not a fan of zombies, but these grabbed my attention; I love the contrast of the B&W zombies with the color bases. The combination works nicely. Hats off to you!

Got the first round of zombies finished.  Here's a few pics

I also started the next two hoard bases, just need some paint and flock and have 60 more zeds still on sprues but ready to go.

Look great, you can mix and match their ghouls in with the zed sprues and they work very well, may give you a bit more variety :D
