AKULA's 1/35 Zombie Project pg3 more zombies....
« on: February 17, 2017, 03:38:09 PM »
Thought I'd start a new thread to keep track of my latest project...1/35 zombies.

Some of you may recall my previous foray into zombies....I've still got something like 6 or 700 28mm Zeds, but I wanted to try something a little different, so I'm up scaling.

Will have a reboot of my zombie AR:SE rules also - and the rules will once again be free to download ...thinking of a few more character rules to allow more of a role play feel to the game.

Figures

In the meantime, I've started assembling my new horde, starting with some Masterbox plastics.  These come in a sprue with separate arms, heads, legs and torsos, and while they are meant to be assembled in a specific way, they will allow plenty of room for customisation.

I will also add some of the resin commercially available figures to my collection, such as NYED, MAIM etc, but the MB figures allow me to start off at c£2-3 a figure, rather than the £10-12 a figure for resins.

This is basically what you get - there is also a familiar looking knife wielding lady zombie hunter, minus her motorbike, but I'm afraid that she is going to end up as spare parts.... Have added a bit of greenstuff to the base of the crawling zed, so that she has a bit of lunch.

More soon.

 :)

I like the style of those zombies, very 1950s!

In fact the top left one is a 'dead' ringer for the first night of the living dead zombie. Are the others based on the film?

I don't think it is very mad.

I painted lots of AIRFIX 1:32 figures last 2 years ago. It was brilliant. Best figures ever. And the best paint. You're going to love it.

But this is going to be huge! You are going to win big! I promise you it is going to be great.

(really looking forward to seeing where you go with this  ;))

Oh man! I can see I'll need to remember not to look at this thread during breakfast, lunch, dinner!..............second breakfasts, elevenses afternoon tea..........supper, midnight snacks......or just generally while eating! ;)

How do you find painting 1:35 scale figures? I can imagine it's a totally different ballgame from 28mm.

So you'll be gaming at this scale? How many minis are you aiming for? I had no idea you could get all this stuff at that scale.

I'll let you know....

 lol

My painting skills arent the greatest but fortunately the subject matter lends itself to grime and gore that will hopefully cover up some of my childlike painting.

That's the plan - I thought I'd got zombies out of my system when I made those horde bases in 28mm, but I'm going to approach it from a different angle this time.

I'm thinking up to 10 survivors, but probably averaging 4-6 per game, allowing aroma for a bit more characterisation without slowing down the gameplay.

Zombies wise, I won't put a top figure on it, but I expect I'll end up with at least 30.

The game board will be more building centric, and have building barricades, clearing rooms etc

I've got my eye on various Zeds from MAIM, NYED, Paracel etc but that raises the cost considerably - I've got a few boxes of the MB ones and am going to mix them in with some regular modern 1/35 sprues to give me more variety......

That sounds really interesting,  I'll be watching how this progresses. The larger scale does suggest a more RPG type approach.

This is a real puzzler. Seems like 1/35 is more costly (oh man the terrain costs) and more demanding in terms of painting but doesn't offer any gaming advantages over 28mm. What's the appeal?

Seriously though...it's bigger.

From a visual perspective, I've done games with a sea of zombies on the table, but for conventions larger figures catch the eye.

Terrain won't cost me a penny - I'll scratch build.

Conversion wise, there are loads of opportunities due to the availability of modern 1/35 plastics.

Cost wise, there will be fewer Zeds on the table, and using the MB plastics to pad out my force will keep the price down.

Oh, and I might sculpt/commission a few extra bits for it...

I sort of had a plan of doing somewhat similar but only in the vein of "weird post-WW2 meets zombie apocalypse" and yes, as well in 1/35 scale. So I could/can mix different 1/35 kits quite freely since they wouldn't be "real".

So I will be following this and taking notes :D
