Wargames Factory "Apocalypse Survivors: The Men" boxed set
« on: April 16, 2013, 06:46:13 PM »
Just thought I'd re-post this news item I picked up on TGN as I fear it may slip under the radar because it has been fairly quiet around Wargames Factory lately.

Anyway, it looks like they brought out a box of 20 plastic miniatures in their usual multi-part style, this time it's usual men in unusual circumstances ;)

I haven't received my first order from them yet, but it should arrive soon. If it's decent, I'll probably order more stuff from them. Of course I'll be waiting for reviews on this one before I add it to my cart, but the pictures look pretty good.

As soon as it will be available in europe, I'll order this one.

I already ordered their zombie females set, wich is really cool, especially for the price.

It's an interesting set. I painted a set of twelve for WGF for their convention display, they're shown on the WGF Facebook page and on their webstore. I didn't do the ones shown above which I suspect are digitally painted.

    Wargames Factory Facebook Album

There's a lot of variety, although a few poses are pretty dynamic and it would be very hard to use certain arms with specific torsos, especially bare arms on the suit body :)
Being plastic a hand swap is cake, so I can live with the need to convert to get certain weapons on specific bodies.

So, they're not 100% modular. One criticism leveled at WGF in the past was rigid, static poses, and these are not static and have good anatomy. The pieces fit together very well, I used almost no filler at all. The only arm combo I was displeased with was the crossbow where the supporting hand fits under the weapon, and quite honestly that might have been my fault anyway. I think I used the wrong arms on two torsos and they required a slight amount of melted styrene to level out the seam.

They paint up very easily and are light years ahead of the first releases. I can pinpoint exactly when they hired a new sculptor- right around the first samurai release. Every release has been better than the previous since then, correcting issues as they arise.

The survivors are 'smallish' 28mm and I think they will scale well with Hasslefree and many of the more slender sculpting styles that are on the market now.

Obvious downsides: No revolvers, no civilian camping/bookbag backpacks. The extra pouches and stuff are rigid and don't want to round out around the waist naturally. I understand there will be revolvers in the next release, female survivors.

When I got my first sprues a couple weeks ago my eyes popped out when I saw the extra weapon and arms sprue. There's around eight AK47s.

I didn't drool over them like I did when I was painting the Perry Zouaves, but they're worth the money and show that current WGF is NOT the 'old' WGF.

Might be worth a punt after payday, looks like you'd get some decent figures at an even better price!

Tell me more about digital painting.

It's likely just Photoshop (or Corel)... start with a gray scale image (a 3D render would be ideal, which we know they have since they're digitally sculpted) and set a layer above it to 'soft light' or something, and color it in. The figures with the white background are too clean and I've done enough skinning and 3D work to see the look. No one can paint 28mm that smooth, at least not that I've seen. Then again, maybe 'StoneColdLead' can, but I know I can't :)

Take a hard look... they're like Northern Renaissance panel paintings where colors are glazed onto their 'area', over a tonal underpainting, with almost zero color mixing.

I'm sure they're doing it so they can get rolling on box art and get color product images out there, not to be sneaky, since they're currently contracting me to build and legitimately paint their sets as they get released. I wouldn't want to wait on me either :P

     :o

I am trying to avoid buying larger (than 3 to 6 mm) figures but if they come out with a matching box of female survivors as good as these, I know I'll cave.

    Gracias,

EGG-Zactly.  I don't do Apocalypse gaming (currently getting rid of the few uniquely PA figures I have) especially zombies (except low level FRPGs) at all but these would be great as armed civilians for so many other applications.

    Gracias,

    Glenn

These look really useful. I have the WW2 Americans and they are very good if a little bit fiddly. Look forward to picking some of these up.
