Yesterday, I met with a good friend for a small game. Since I wanted to test my new landsknechts, I decided to carry theam to his place and start a little game.
Normally you play Black Powder or Pike&Shotte with big armies on big tables, but I saw so much great games on the i-net with just one or two battallias. So I thought: just give it a try with a small number.
We scaled everything down by half. So Infantry would walk just 3", cav 4,5"...
Played it out on a 1x1,2 table.
The mission was: Landsknechts try to take the City of Bolognese, italians and french try to hold it.
Each side had 2 Battallias, the italians had in addition the french gendarmes.
Landsknechts:Gunter Büchsenberg
Landsknecht Pikeblock (large)
Landsknecht Arquebuiers
heavy gun
Johann Büchsenberg
Landsknecht Pikeblock
Landsknecht Arquebusiers
heavy gun
Italians und French:Giaccomo Scudetto (verteidigt Bolognese)
Italian Pikeblock
Arquebusiers
1 unit Gendarmes
Vincenzo Caruso (on a flanking mission)
Italian Pikeblock (small)
Crossbows
Here are the brave citizans of Bolognese supported by a condottierie an his troops...

At the start of the battle, the landsknechts seemed not willing to march (scary french knights)...

...but after a few good command tests they managed to get things rolling..

But some of the landsknechts seemed more happy to stay behind...a cunning plan?

On the right side of the battle the Condottierie crossbows confronted the landsknecht pike block.

The gendarmes decided to confront the smaller pike block of the landsknechte too, hoping to have enough time, to march to the bigger pike block later, and if lucky flank it.
(the sheep are deco and later casultymarker if needed...

But the plan of the gendarmes failed after a blunder...args.

On the other side of the battlefield a shootout was on its way, won by the landsknecht arquebuse. The italian arquebuse fled from the field at the first chance...oh my

The way was open for the large pike block to confront the italian pike in the village. After a few heavy blows were delt, the italians gave way and the battle was won for the landsknechts

A great evening of gaming: you can really have fun with Pike&Shotte at small numbers of figures...
Cheers,
Don
