Does size matter that much?
« on: July 02, 2013, 07:26:30 AM »
Hi

I have been thinking about adding some old west minis to my collection. Given that I started years ago my first minis are all foundry 25mm, but now everything is 28 or 32mm. So I thought I'd sell off my 25mm to fund replacements.

However, I find it hard to choose what to sell and even harder to decide if I can mix in 25, 28 and 32mm. Which is strange as I am over 6ft and had a coworker who is perhaps not much over 5ft and I don't find that shocking. So I decided to stand minis against each other and then recycle the smallest.

But, I then realised that while next to each other in a size comp they looked strange "in game" pehaps hey didn't.

Anyway you can clearly see I need HELP...

CAN OLD AND NEW LIVE TOGETHER?

I'd say that the first pic is ok, but the second seems a little odd.

HOW ABOUT IN THE REAL (TABLE TOP) WORLD?

I don't find that shocking, but am I blinded by LOVE?

I think most I can live with, however did ditch a lot of black scorpion other than chap with 2 pistols and duster and the preacher as they seemed just that bit too large (most of mine are orignal Perry Foundry figs..townsfolk are anyway)

The reaper are large too and dont mention the orignal deadlnads whihc were giants.

I like to think of heroes and villains as larger than life and justify it that way :D

Oh yes me too!

I might get just a couple of Black Scorpion as Men Mountain (maybe Bubba(?)), but I was more think along the lines of Brigade Games, do you have any?

I think it is more a matter of build or frame than height for me. Some minis are more realistically proportioned and others more cartoony. Personally I find it hard to ignore a size difference, but actually wish I wasn't so critical and could just remember these are little lead soldiers anyway.

They are Paul Hicks sculpts, have had lots of his figures so they should match very well with the older Foundry stuff havent picked them up though as my weird west is sitting firmly on the back bench ;D

I've never had a problem mixing different sized figures. I look at the differences & if they fall with in the size variences of people I know I use them. Some of the smaller 25s like old Mini-figs or Ral Partha don't fit well, but old Foundry & Dixons seem to look fine. If most of your figures are 28s a few 30-32mm figures mix in just fine too.

I think they all look fine together, especially that nice Boot Hill figure ;)

Seen from three feet away when palying a game I think you notice the difference even less.

Yes, I agree

If you look closely you might spot a second one!

HAH my mis-en-scene worked as he is "hiding" behind a smallish 25mm foundry! Points to us both!

There are no aliens in there.

And if you are looking down on them from above (as most people would be.... ::)), even less so.

I meant to say some lovely brushwork, I especially like the plaid trousers in the first photo.

Standing around my wild west table I usually have people ranging from 5'5" to about 6'5" actually playing the game.  So I guess 3mm in size on the models doesn't really make that much difference to me.

Unfortunately I paint like a clubfisted ogre, the first one is Artwho and can you spot the BootHill Painter?
