Akky's Aliens Project (take 2)
« on: August 28, 2013, 04:40:50 PM »
Its been a LONG time since I posted on this, and the old thread is archived somewhere..

I basically binned the original 2 foot square boards and started again.

The new boards are 450mm x 450mm based upon 18mm Exterior Plywood.

I'm using the superb Fenris Games Sulacco tiles as a starting point - 450mm x 450mm allows me to have 11 squares across each board, with room for a 5mm wooden baton to protect the resin tiles from wear and tear.

As you can see, I've been hoarding quite a few of the tiles....

I'm then going to build the walls up starting from a 3mm foamcard core...

Fenris have left a flat border around the squares and I believe that Ian will be working upon some walls of his own - I plan on using the extra space to build up some alien gunk, plus use some other resin pieces I've been hoarding.

Dropships: Konami (diecast 1:72)

APCs: Galoob Action Fleet (1:50)

There will also be some upper levels, as with my previous project, and some ventilation shafts.

Rules will be homegrown of course!

When I only saw the tiles being laid out I was kinda "meh", but then with those foamboard walls attached it looks promising. I'll keep an eye on this.  ;D

Wow! This is going to be big. I have a similar approach in mind but way less ambitious! I thought about the Fenris tiles but then worked out how much it would cost!  lol Fenris could easily take all my money, they do some top stuff.

It's a shame you only work on small projects. This looks great and them some.
What's with all the nice Aliens projects cropping up right now? Lots and lots of terrific projects getting updates all over the place.

Nice to see you restart your Aliens project.  Interesting layout. It's already given me a few ideas. I'm always amazed at the collections you amass. Looking forward to seeing progress on this and where you take it.

Oh, its always been there on my painting table.

I just finished Colonial Marines on "Ultimate Badass" for the sixth time last week and had a sudden need of painting Colonial Marines BDUs. Not that I do fully agree with how they explain why Hicks still lives in that game, but I also can't stop myself from quoting the movie all the time...

And AKULA's stuff just adds to my addiction.  ;D So, excuse me guys, but I have to paint the flyer base for my Dropship now.

The new boards are 450mm x 450mm based upon 18mm Exterior Plywood.

So if my conversions are correct, and that set up is indeed 4 boards by 5 boards, you have a 6ft by 7.5ft game planned.
WOW :o

If I keep looking at this I'll never get back to my current project. I can hear my Galoob APCs calling to me right now.
Speaking of which, are you planning to paint all those APCs the same, or will you be doing some of the paint schemes from the Colonial Marines Technical Manual?

WOW

Well....I might stick a access road down one side, making it 6' x 8'....must have somewhere for the APCs to park  :D

Maybeeeee......  :)

Oh dear.....  ;D

Lol

Well I'll be interested to see how you move away from space hulky like tiles and to more of a weyland installation like some of the other alien projects.

Will keep an eye on this.....stay frosty!  ;)
