Reaper Bones Cthulhu
« on: 12 January 2014, 06:40:35 PM »
I know everyone here has probably got one of these guys from the Reaper Bones Kickstarter, but I figured I'd toss up some pictures of my guy I just finished painting in case people need motivation to do their own.  He was surprisingly easy to make look pretty good. Mostly drybrushing and washes, to be honest.  Slimy Deep One is for scale.

That's really quite creepy, he looks like leather that's been left in the rain but in a really good and realistic way.
Great painting :)

Looks great !!
But have to say i dont like the model.
The bigger the monster the smaller the wings, quite old problem.
one of the reasons i really like uncle mikes ;)
But once again great paintjob!

I kind of like the small-winged bloated toad type of representation for Cthulhu, to be honest.  Like his wings could be vestigial, or they only work in space or some low gravity planet or something.  He has to walk around on Earth because he's not from here, so his wings don't work the same as they do wherever he's from.  And thank goodness for that.

Well, if I remember correctly, Lovecraft himself stated that Cthulhu's wings were "long and narrow", and also "rudimentary". Bear in mind Cthulhu doesn't belong to this world, or its laws.

And regarding the paintjob, very nice effect you've got there. Never underestimate what drybrushing and washing/glazing can achieve! Good idea opting for a muted and limited colour palette, too.

Plus "wings" could just e the best way to describe something that defies description.I'm not so sure old Cthulhu would need to obey the laws of physics so he might simple levitate and the human mind provides the wings as a defense to stop it from breaking down at the sight of a mountain sized creature from beyond reality flying through the air.

I hear ya on those claws.  It wasn't until I took those pics that I realized the claws look way to white, though some of that is the camera flash.  They are more yellow-ish brown than the picture shows, but they could do probably do with a darker wash of Ogryn Flesh, for sure.

Thanks for the comments everyone!

I really love the colours you've chosen here. I think the purple hues work very well with this model and you've made it look much better than I expected from the model itself. I have one and thought it was pretty good, but not great. Your example shows how much a good paint job can do!
