15mm Fantasy Skirmish
« on: 17 February 2014, 09:31:33 AM »
Greetings All,

I've succumbed to the lure of 15mm Fantasy and want to try skirmish level games. At the moment, I'm looking at figures by Splintered Light and Ral Partha's Blight Haven and Swordplay by Two Hour Wargames as rules, though I'd like something with a bit more Magic in it.

I'm also looking at Fantasy from a Tolkienesque or Poul Anderson's Broken Sword direction, rather than the more common Fantasy grab bag point of view.

Any suggestions on figure compatibility and suitable rules would be most appreciated.

David

Might be worth seeing if you can get yours hands on a copy of Dredskull. Work seems to have stopped on it, but it's still decent.

Greetings. Feel free to send me an email splinteredlightminis[at]gmail[dot]com as I am getting ready to send out copies of a set of skirmish rules I am working on and would love to get some playtesters.

I am also happy to answer any questions about Splintered Light Miniatures that you might have.

Regarding compatibility, it depends on the race for most of the 15mm lines.  Orcs and goblins are going to tend to all mix very well but humans, elves and dwarves will vary in height and thickness.  For example, demonworld dwarves and SLM dwarves work very well but our humans and elves are going to be less compatible since the dw are a bit thicker and slightly taller than the SLM ones.  I have found, however, that once on the table and being used for a game, the difference in size tends to be less noticeable.

If you like Swordplay but want magic just buy THW fantasy rulesets.
Best 15mm fantasy figures are Copplestone's IMO.

Too Be Coo,
Thanks!  It has been fun to have the opportunity to support Out of Darkness.  As far as the figures go, I have a great team of sculptors who have worked with me to get the figures done.

Thanks for all the useful suggestions.

I will check out Copplestone Castings - I have seen pictures of the barbarians painted up and they look very Conan-as-seen-in-Marvel-comics-like - which is a good thing - though not much of the rest of the line.

Regards

Wow! A great selection, David. Off the top of my head, I really like the Hill Giants, and the Gnomes and Halflings are sooooooo cute, but my favorites are the Alan Lee-ish Ogres. That pack is a warband in its own right. :-*

Darn, I might have to make another order ... lol

Postage to the UK (and anywhere international) is $12 flat rate.  This might seem high but I usually eat a couple of dollars on postage when all is said and done but I don't mind since I know some on the other end have some customs costs to deal with.
