Epic Orks - Beginning a new army
« on: December 01, 2014, 05:11:49 PM »
I've started working on a new 6mm army for use with Epic 40K, Future War Commander, and/or Dirtside.  I'm going with Orks this time and have decided to paint the core of the force using the Bad Moons motif.  I like the yellow color, but it may be a bit orange now that I look at the pictures.

I'm happy with these and will be adding to the force so that the Marines have an opponent to face off against.

Battlewagons

Stompas

Nice start. If you're worried about the colour, try a brown wash maybe?

I think I'm good with the color as it is.  It makes them stand out and I don't really see orks as camo kind of guys.  Dirty maybe.  I think I will try to get a few more models painted and see how they look on the table before I decide on toning the brightness down.

The color on the stompas looks great.  The vehicles not so much.  Looks like the vehicles could use one more coat of wash to tone things down and help provide a little more contrast.  The other thing you could do to tone things down is paint a logo or emblem onto the sides of the vehicles.  That would break up the yellow a little more, without adding too much work or business to the figures.

Good work. The bright look works for me, especially for figures that small.

Bad Moon Yellow looks awesome. Of course you know Red ones go faster  lol Seriously the smaller the fig the the brighter the color needs to be or brighter highlights. I have a large Epic Ork army and used a lot of red and yellow. My space marine chapter is Dark angels and is much harder to distinguish on the table.

Keep up the good work and post more Pictures  :)

Looking good. I'd be tempted to go with that brown wash just to mucky things up a bit.

As an act of mutual enabling, did I ever show you the epic Pansies I had at the shop? Had a crappy paint job, on which I performed a crappy strip of, but if you can use them, excellent!

Remind me next time you see me at Gauntlet, Sean.

Pretty beasties you've got there, though I think the Stompas show a bit more detail, unless it's just the piccies.

I've got a small force of Eldar started and plan to make additions in the future.  I'll try to remind you the next time I see you to show me what you've got.

The battlewagons are much less detailed than the stompas.  The battlewagons are quite old and GW's models got much better as time went on.  They could be better, but they are what I've got.  I will add some of the later edition battlewagons down the road, but started with these to make sure I like the colors before I went to work with the valuable stuff.  ;)

I really like these, and the "clean" yellows are very reminiscent of the earlier Ork Badmoon schemes.

One thing that's not too difficult to do, which breaks up the yellow a bit, and which is also "in period", is to add a few flames in black. Flames are so much easier to freehand than anything else really, and they are perfect for the less detailed models, or models where you want to add a bit of interest.

For painting the flames, use a little black paint (duh) thinned with a little black ink. This keeps the paint thin enough to paint neatly with, but also keeps it pigmented enough to not require a second pass.

Anyway, I look forward to seeing the bigger force of these as you complete them. :)
