King Moonscowl's Dwarven Host
« on: 04 January 2015, 04:41:46 PM »
I've recently painted up a few new pieces for my Warhammer Dwarfs and thought it was about time I took some photographs of them and did a little write up.

King Moonscowl

King Moonscowl comes from a long line of grumpy dwarven kings from deep in the heart of the mountains, which often means he can't choose which heirlooms to carry to battle. However, his famed grumpiness has resulted in him constantly walking to war rather than being carried by shieldbearers as no dwarves can be found willing to put up with his grim demeanour for any length of time, this often results in him coming up short against rival warlords in single combat.

A Games Workshop Dwarf Lord, painted around 8 years ago for the start of this army. I would quite like to go back and tart his paintjob up a bit (particularly the axe handle) but have never gotten around to it - he'll no doubt stay like this forever.

The Moonscowl Clan

The Moonscowl clan are led to battle by Queen Moonscowl, the long suffering wife of King Moonscowl. It is often argued she is the source of the kings constant gloomy outlook on life - but nobody dares raise the topic in his presence.

The clansmen of the Moonscowls often partake in a drink during quiet (and not so quiet!) periods of battles they partake in, this questionable practice no doubt goes a long way in explaining their poor performances on the battlefield

Mostly old Marauder dwarfs, led by Queen Helga from the Grudge of Drong campaign set with a few drunk dwarves from the same period, mostly painted 8 years ago, though I have another 5 painted recently allowing me to push the unit up to 30 models. I've snuck in a bunch of plastic one pose warriors in the unit to bulk it out. I do love this unit, but they rarely do anything on the battlefield beside dying.

1st Moonscowl Airforce

King Moonscowl has a long fascination with zany dwarven engineering, after a history of failures involving self destructing stone throwers and invisible cannons, Moonscowl's latest toy is a gyrocopter - yet to be tested in battle, the brave pilot Glump Leadhead has said goodbye to his wife and said his farewells as no is expecting him to return from his next battle

An old gyrocopter, much easier to put together than the later metal one (which I've given up on several times!) and nicer to boot! This has been recently revamped from my old dwarf army and given a new base, which features a cowering Empire soldier from the old Giant kit. His main role will be to get in the way and be a nuisance.

Lovely paintwork.  Nice colour scheme (though I find myself wanting one more...alternate colour, to break up some of the regiments).  Love the back story and the work.  How big is this army going to be?  Is this a Warhammer-only thing?

VERY COOL AND BEAUTIFULLY painted & based! The background fluff really enhances the miniatures. VERY WELL DONE!

Love the painting.
After watch the Hobbit movies I really would like to paint some dwarfs.
But they would probably in up in my rather large lead pile if I purchased some.

This - only, I am quite impulsive when it comes to miniatures and painting them. I'll try and post mine up a bit later, but I like what you have done with your miniatures. I have the very same dwarf lord on his way - it's still my favourite dwarf hero model bar perhaps one or two of the older white dwarf models.

Snarky's Stubborn Bolts

Snarky, the leader of the Moonscowl clans crossbow division is known for being one to stick to the traditional weapons of the Dwarven race. While the majority of the Moonscowl hold have a fascination with handguns and artillery he and his dwindling followers have stuck to the trusty crossbow. This often finds them left at home guarding the hold or placed on the far flank of the army facing down heavily armoured knights so that the rest of the clan don't have to deal with them.

More Marauder Dwarves, with the addition of a Grudge of Drong period drinking crossbowman. I have a few more of these in the lead mountain that may see the light one day. But I find it hard to overlook the thunderers.

Old Grumbles

Old grumbles is a long surviving member of the clan. His origins are unknown, but his negative effect on wizards and shamans combined with the fabled Firey Ring of Thorri that he managed to aquire, mean the clan rarely take to battle without him by their side.

The Grudge of Drong runesmith. Cracking figure. Really pleased the latest Dwarf Army Book brought back the Firey Ring of Thorri, its quite a handy item as well which is a double treat
