Statuesque Head tests - Frostgrave soldiers on pg3
« on: 14 February 2016, 06:31:18 PM »
Following on from my test of the new Pulp Scale Female Heads on some Frostgrave Cultists, I've tried them on some Perry Miniatures Foot Knights.

Very nice plastics as I'm sure a lot of you know, not half as fiddly as I expected and very easy to clean mould lines. Recommended!

So here's the test with both the Fine Scale Female Heads (three on the left) and Pulp Scale Female Heads (three on the right).

Closer shot of the Fine Scale Female Heads:

Closer shot of the Pulp Scale Female Heads:

Here are my tips for lady knights:

1- Glue the arms on to the bodies first to avoid part clashes (though leave off the scabbards or you might bend them like my clumsy fingers did).
2- Flatten a 1-1.5mm ball of putty into the neck socket of the body.
3- Press your head of choice into the putty, as far back as possible looks best I reckon.
4- Tidy up the putty so it looks like a collar. I attempted to make it look like chain mail but in hindsight I should have just left it as leather as my chain mail leave a bit to be desired...

Personally, I think both sizes of heads work quite nicely. The Fine Scale heads match the original Perry heads for scale, so if I were mixing those in a unit I'd use the Fine Scale heads.

Meanwhile, as well as being a bit bigger, the Pulp Scale heads are proportionally a bit wider meaning they visually narrow the shoulders a bit, perhaps making the figure look a bit more feminine. The larger heads will match most fantasy ranges quite well too - they're a good match for Frostgrave plastics. As such the Pulp Scale heads would be my choice for fantasy lady knights in a warband mixing various manufacturers' figures.

Hope that helps! :)

My goodness, they look blinking marvellous  :-*

I am now desperately trying to think how I can legitimately fit a roving band of lady knights into either my Wars of The Roses or Game of Thrones projects...  ::)

I mean, obviously I can do Brienne of Tarth for the latter, but having seen these, I want an entire contingent, Godammit!

Rather brilliant Andrew. Sure these'll be very popular. Well done sir.

Will someone be carrying your products at Salute, or is it mail order only?

Very cool.  I've been meaning to put together a few lady adventurers for my dungeon game - and I have those knights sitting on sprue.

Cheers guys. Quite pleased and surprised how well it work.

Will someone be carrying your products at Salute, or is it mail order only?

If you nag Annie the Dice Bag Lady she'll likely have some at Salute. :)

Nice! :) TBH I have trouble seeing much difference in scale, but very gratifying to have the choice.

Now if you could do a set in elfy helmets, I can get that maiden guard unit conversion done, ta. lol

I agree, though I do like the first/left set better. But I think that's more on other appearances (expressions, armour, etc.) than scale. Scale differences seem very subtle.

I'm really going to have to look into picking up a few packs of these. (If overseas postage doesn't kill it.)

In answer to sasori's somewhat un-PC but reasonable query, I read somewhere that little or no concession at all was made for 'ladieswear' armour except for Queens etc. Those medieval ladies who found themselves leading men in battle or in combat routinely used male armour, often forced to use a body wrap to reduce their bust so they could wear their Lord's/Dead husband's armour in battle... Just one of those little known facts you pick up reading...
If you look at pictures of female re-enactors in C15 period costume in Embleton & Howe's The Medieval Soldier, the costume of the period was more practical and did not particularly emphasise the female form. By the time you've donned arming doublet, jack or aketon, mail or plate armour evryone pretty much looks the same unless you are super tall or super wide!
These look really great and I'd certainly go for using them for Brienne of Tarth and one or two others. Don't forget that the hairstyle was equally important. The medieval military bowl-cut with shaved sides which was popular from the Norman period onwards was intended to add 'padding' on the top of the head while keeping the ears free. By contrast the Monk's tonsure was meant to show humility to God, and by rendering the military cut useless also visually announced he had renounced violence.
I'd beware of choosing a head with too modern looking a hair style. You don't want a medieval shieldmaiden looking like one of the 1960s S.H.A.D.O.W. pilots out of Gerry Anderson's UFO!
