All by eye. The hoops aren't perfectly round, so there is a substantial degree of "making it fit".

I made a few test pieces and measured it all out by trial error, to come up with something that looks ok.

 :)

"Looks ok" he says! That's some accurate cutting mate  :-*

BTW if you're lighting this, you'll need to light the rest of your SW stuff! ;)

Ha..trying to resist that particular temptation...although for a 29" Imperial Star Destroyer, I could be tempted....less so for a 3mm tie fighter  :D

I've added the extra hoop (21" in diameter) which will give a bit more rigidity to the end model.

The V beams are also now done...well, they need a tidy, but you get the idea.  As mentioned previously, although they may look it on the photos, the hoops aren't perfectly round, so I've had to use a few little wedges of wood here and there to get a proper fit. The untidiness should be at least partially hidden when I add the facings to the hoops.

The hangar hoods still aren't attached...I need to sort the lighting out first, and prime the hangar bays before attaching them.

That is looking so smooth already.
It is a shame that someone will eventually want to destroy it.

:o :o :o. At least wait until after the competition is over....

Quick update, early lunch break, so I'm going to add a bit more detailing.  Have polyfillered the step between the anti-ship gun gallery, and the roof of the hangar, to smooth it out, and then added the AS guns.

Also adding some foamboard brackets (top left of photo) between the 18" and 21" hoops to provide more rigidity - will also be handy when I add the lighting in - the gap between these two hoops will eventually be covered over, so the wiring will be hidden.

Bottom right of the photo is a zeta class cargo ship from Mel Miniatures (Shapeways) which fits in pretty well.

Re: AKULA's BS 2017 Entry - Rogue One Scariff Shield Gate pg4 Top Facings
« Reply #55 on: 12 January 2017, 10:49:23 PM »
This evening's work consisted of the rough cut for the top facings - again, will need to tidy up, as its a lot rougher than the photo shows

 :?

The thin strip on the V-beam sections will hold a whole bunch of turbo laser turrets.

So far only the thin strips are glued down - the rest is just to give an idea of what is will look like, I need to sort out the wiring for the hangars before anything else gets secured.  Once all of the top facings are attached, I can then finish shaping them.

Thanks guys, I'm enjoying the build.

Making the cradle was definitely worthwhile, as its avoided any shifting during the construction phase, and although the hoops aren't perfectly round, they have been a great help as well, as its given me a framework.
