I have finally cleared my painting desk sufficiently to start construction:

This is the largest item I have attempted to build with plastic card.  All my previous experience is with smaller items or flat building frontage masters.  It has therefore already been a bit of a learning experience.

However, I'm not at all happy with the design.  It is much too angular and looks more like the bastard offspring of the Aliens dropship and Thunderbird 2.   :?

I will continue, but building a Dropship rather than the originally envisaged Ornithopter, as the current shape/design fits that much better.  I have a bunch of Copplestone FW Troopers that are badly in need of some transport.

Likely something more like this?:

2024 Lead Tally: Acq: 013 Ptd: 055  Total: +042
2023 Lead Tally: Acq: 560 Ptd: 056  Total: -504
2009-22 Tally:  Acq: 3293 Ptd: 905  Total: -2388

I really like the 'new' design: looks the perfect shape for dropping out of the belly of a transporter   8)

Stage 1 reminds me of the Eagle Transporters from Space 1999   :D

Good to change the outcome if you're not "feeling" it. I think your original idea still has merit, and you were right starting with the cabin to build the rest to get good proportions. IMHO and based on the one photo I think you built the cabin too wide and angular for an Ornithopter.

However, the dropship looks promising.

I wouldn't worry too much mate! I take it there will be gubbins to add to the surrounding bulkhead around the cockpit module? If you are concerned, could you not add maybe foamed pvc or thick plastic card to the sides of the cockpit module and sand the edges to give a nice curved look? But just the sides mind you, I really like the shape of it and where your going!

Thanks for the feedback.  :)

A bit more progress has been made.  I spent quite a while sorting out the landing gear and ended up with something a bit more complicated than I had intended, but happy with how it has turned out.

The orange bits are cut down covers from inkjet cartridges:

Everything else is plastic card/tubing and brass rod for strength:

Each foot has 3 'jointed' supports, but its hard to show it clearly from a single angle.  The brass rod will fit into mounting points drilled in the bottom of the hull.

Hopefully I can crack on with the rest of the build now.  I didn't want to complete the main body until I knew if the landing gear would work and how it would fit into the underside.  I have a pretty good idea of how the rest of the model will come together.  Up until now I have been rather making it up as I went along, which makes for an imperfect design.  I have however rather enjoyed working with plastic card on a larger build.

This! I would have glued my fingers together and more than likely cut the end of one off. The model would still look shit. Very nice work mate.
