I'm guessing it's because the original RTB01 (mk 6 beakies) plastics looked a lot like the wombles, at least the shape of the helmet looks a lot like the shape of a womble head

Yes it is because of the Mk6  helmet.

RTB01 sprue.

If you look back at the Ultramarines (vanilla wombles) on this thread, they are all Mk6.

And then it became a theme:
Vegewombles
Vampire Wombles
Snot Wombles
Dog Wombles
Frock Wombles
