Looking for 15th century javelins and slings
« on: 09 February 2024, 06:23:19 PM »
I'm trying to flesh out some Catalonian Civil War armies that I've built out of mostly Perry minis with some 3d prints thrown in here and there, and I'm really struggling to find suitable minis or parts for javelins and slings. Both are easy enough to find in stuff made for Roman and even Dark Age Iberians, but a lot of the clothing and armor just doesn't work with Aragonese from the 1460's even if you squint a lot.

Does anyone know of someone doing javelins/throwing spears and slingers that would work even as just arm swaps with Perry mercenaries? Right now I'm leaning towards 3d printing Northern Crusades Miniatures javelins and Reconquer Designs slingers and doing some headswaps or digital kitbashing, but it sounds like a real pain to do with my rudimentary modelling and slicing skills, and I'm unsure how well either looks alongside Perry plastics.

The armies of Catalan and Aragon are reported to be using slings as late as The Battle of Najera 1367 so I see your dilemma. I'm sure you're right about the tradition of using the sling continued into the Late 15th CE in said countries.

I have to admit that this is a subject I've never tackled in my modelling career and I do have a specific interest in the "Spanish" in the HY!.

Having glanced around the net at some of my favourite manufacturers I would be temped to add plastic and/or metal slings to the following packs:

Claymore Casings- OT29 Skirmisher Javelin Men 1-

And from Claymore Castings again:
OT31 Skirmisher Javelin Men 2:

Also, there are some ready made Slingers from Footsore in their Anglo Danishj/Saxon range that would suite the job nicely:https://footsoreminiatures.co.uk/collections/late-saxons/products/late-saxon-slingers

Is it not possible just to buy sprues of Victrix Late Roman Archers/Slingers or Dark Age Archers/Slingers and use their separate arms on the Perry minis? The bodies may not be correct but the arms are quite generic. A Late Roman Slinger sprue costs £5 and contains 4 staff slings and 3 hand slings, while the DA sprue at £5 only has 4 hand slings. In the UK, the Sprue Shop usually has both in stock.

What about generic peasant slingers from Medbury?

I would invest in the odd sprue of plasticsgrupping beast dark ages and just use the hands.
I have a bad case of prescient nostalgia. The future's not what it used to be.
