Goodbyes Board?
« on: November 08, 2020, 12:50:00 PM »
Any thoughts about creating a Goodbyes Board?  I read today that Vampifan passed away at the beginning of the year, this was the first time I had heard and I think it a shame that nothing was said.
We have an Introductions Board for folks to say 'Hi' when they join LAF, perhaps we need a Goodbyes Board for friends and acquaintances to say Goodbye when a member passes.  A gaming Obituary as it were.
Thoughts?

From an obituary perspective yes, it would be a good, if slightly melancholy idea.

When I first read the title, I thought it was going to be were people posted if they were throwing their toys out the pram, and stomping off!

Perhaps a book of remembrance for Obits rather than general comments?

Be a good idea if something could be done.

It's a good idea which I support.

Sad to hear of Vampfan passing, he was a gent and really helpful when he could be, with an encyclopedic knowledge of zombies which I shared not least due to his enthusiasm...

It was a surprise to me to hear of Vampifans passing.

Never met him even though he was only around half an hour away.He did a great blog.

Could be useful.  You are left to wonder what happened to people you chat with on forums who stop posting suddenly. Vampfan gave a warning of his decline on his blog but most people just disappear if they don't have friends or family familiar with their hobby and access to their accounts.

I agree with the above sentiments and have given that some thought too in the past about folks who just disappear with no reason. A Farewell board would be a good idea.

I like the idea, it's a good way to know if someone is gone rather than wondering about things there.

Having discussed the issue, our current stance would be that a dedicated board is out of the question for now. Present and future hobby demographics notwithstanding, it would be our sincere hope that such incidents are few and far between enough (at least for the time being) not to require a dedicated space which, strictly-speaking, would be out of scope for the forum (i.e. personal topics).

Nonetheless, we of course appreciate that you're making the suggestion in the best intent, and that there is some benefit to it for the community as described above. Still, it is an extremely sensitive issue, and one we do not consider to be best discussed in a public venue - bereavement and grief are personal issues, first and foremost, and any condolence issued here will necessarily lack (at least some of) the gravity and sincerety appropriate to the matter at hand.

That said, given a tangible link to our common hobby in general and the LAF community in particular, obituary topics would generally be appropriate to be posted on the General Discussion board, provided the OP and repliers behave themselves in a manner befitting the subject and not being disrespectful to the deceased and their next of kin.
