Well, since the contest came out just two days after finishing the final touches on an upscaling of an Orc ship from Uncharted Seas from 1/600 scale to 28mm scale (minus cannon - I haven't been able to afford cast cannon, and I am too lazy to try and make my own), I will go forth with my next endeavour.

See, I have been catching hell from my usual gaming group buddies, who concentrate on playing Warhammer Fantasy, WH 40k, Warmachine/Hordes, some Uncharted Seas, Blood Bowl, Battlefleet Gothic, and occasionally Lord of the Rings because, inevitably, if I can find a way to play a Pirate army, I will. I outlined the building of my steam-driven paddlewheel pirate ship for Warmachine here some years ago, my Norwegian VSF army (which is also the core of my Imperial Guard army, along with my Pulp Germans) have a piratical fluff background, my Empire Army for Fantasy (finished models of which can be found in the 'what I painted' sections for last December and January), I played Eldar pirates in BFG, and now, I have started a Dark Elf Army for WH Fantasy.

Sooo...I will continue with my quest to fins a sea serpent head big enough to allow me to make a variation of this...

I don't want to the Back Ark, but the smaller towers on the backs of Sea Serpents. I just need to find a Sea Serpent/Dragon head that is about 6" to 8" in rough diameter - the rest I can scratch build, I think.

Ot maybe I'll finally finish that Mammoth Drawn siege chariot I have been putting off...

I have the best wife ever. I was sitting here complaining that I could not find a good base for the serpent portion of the build, and you know what? She goes, "well, have you looked at lawn sculptures? They had one in the Skymall catalog I looked at when I flew to Sacramento last month for my reunion."

And I found this.

Muahahahaha! Perfect! Now, to build the castle part.

I don't think I am going to go as rounded and fluid as the GW 'elf' stuff usually is - for one, it is too damned hard to make such beasts, and I have an old wooden castle that I think will work perfectly for this. It will be heavy, but that is not so much of a concern.

Well, yeah, it is 2-3 feet long. For scale, I need the serpent's head alone to be somewhere around 10" long. To go to 28mm scale on the serpent ships, they need to get to about 30" long, and that dragon will be perfect.

She is not quite finished - I still have to find a way to afford arming her. The original mini has 8 cannon all pointing forward, and I am scratching funds together gradually as I work with other projects as well to get the Parrot Rifles from Reviresco...

I put the original ship as well as an Orc Hero on board. Now, back to my Helldrake floating castle...

I realized as I stood that old GW Dark Elf on the head that I painted that model 23 years ago. So, now, I am going to go drink until I can forget that particular fact.

Well, if I was not using it for this, it would be in mine. Cool piece.

Here's my work so far.

Forced to work with the standard polystyrene foam, which is a crappy material to work with, but I will prevail.

The plan is to have the head forward, and shape the body, with castle on top, to then ease back to the tail, and perhaps show some chains to show how the fortress is attached. Being a Dark Elf thing, I have no qualms about having the chains attached via hooks. At the front of the castle, I will mount a ramp, that will be long enough to reach the head, so that the army inside can be released to assault whoever the dragon has bitten into.
