Lovely work. I add my vote in favour of the outdoor mosaics. They look cool. :)

Thanks for all the supportive comments.  :)

The tenth building I have completed for my Gangs of Rome layout, a book dealer, and the kit is again another of Sarrisa's Lower Rank Insula Corner.

Roman "books" were not our modern idea of a book of course, but scrolls or "book rolls". I stupidly decided to make my scrolls by hand, when I could have just 3D printed them. That's about two hours of my life I won't get back! They probably do look a bit more authentic although because I used the pirate-map coffee staining method on them.

Apparently exteriors of bookshops were plastered with advertisements and choice quotes from the titles in stock. Martial once told a friend not to bother going in, since you could “read all the poets” on the door posts.

I've been wanting to add some greenery to my builds for some time and this time I included a trestle and climbing plant. On the blank wall of the building I made a small street shrine, likely to Jupiter.

I have not been on this board for awhile.
Glad I took a look.
I must say I am very impressed with the detail on the buildings.
Really love what you have done. :-*
I have spent a fair amount of time over the last few days, drooling.
Thanks for sharing, looking forward to seeing what is up next.

And given the latest news from Pompeii I assume a pizzeria is next on the building list :)

Glad you guys seem to be enjoying it - don't want to bore people with endless building images. My goal is to get a table set up soon but I am waiting on a suitable mat.

This is the first upper rank building I have completed - a moneylender. Although temples formed the first banks in Rome, private moneylenders or government supervised argentarii did exist. The kit is one of Sarissa's Upper Rank Insula Corner kits and has been my first experience with Sarissa's MDF pillars.  I have to admit I was pretty dubious about how these would turn out but I am pleasantly surprised with how easy these went together and of the overall final look. I'm very keen to tackle the temple now. The interior is fairly plain and features a floor mosaic that was simply printed out from a Googled image and gloss varnished.

Having not visited this thread since it's early days - I am agog.  You are stepping bit by bit to what will be remembered as a 'legendary' project, long remembered by all those fortunate enough to see it in person.  And pretty well remembered from here, too.

Seems you decided to continue on with a lot of the interior detailing.  While much of it might never be seen, especially during a game, there is one person who will always be pleased with that extra effort.  And that, sir, will be you.  It's always been a bit backwards part of miniatures gaming - we build what we wish we got to play on and then mostly it gets played on by others while we run the game.  But I suspect in your quiet moments - when the tsking wife when you really do exceed the available limits beyond her endurance allows you those moments to yourself - you will relish that extra effort as you either play solo or just sit back admiring and imagining actions on what you've built.

Superb effort, sir.  Truly.  Oh, and I love the black base under the tiles mini-tutorial, I would not have thought to use black but it is highly effective.

If you have not, you really need to watch the old movie, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.  And you need to find some proper 'courtesans' to populate the brothel!  Just tell the kids the ladies are preparing to take a bath.  lol

Looking forward to more.  And if you don't find the right mat, make one yourself - I think that might ultimately be necessary to match to what you've done.  I hope to be truly stunned by the group shots.

I picked up some embossed wall-paper, well a 'sample' of the roll.
This I wall paper pasted to a cheap offcut of MDF from a DIY store.
Dark base colour & some dry brushing later, it makes a serviceable
base for my Peninsular buildings. Cheap, not difficult & it does the job.
If you can make those wonderful buildings, you can make the base.

Perhaps I've missed any mention here in this thread - or perhaps it is in another thread - but I have not seen any figures yet.  And it is July.  And your game is in October.  I know it is a 'skirmish' system.  But those figures are going to need to match the buildings, no?  Maybe someone else is painting the figures?  Just wondering is all.
