Brilliant work! I love the grass effect as well, but that gorge is simply stunning. The debris stones gathered in the middle of where the mud would flow when it rained is a beautiful touch.

I was not replying to your thread because I didnt like it Richard. I just wanted to wait until the whole piece is finished. You did an amazing job on this project. You are very talented to capture the realistic scenery. Especially the rocky areas are stunning. If you allow me one small critic please. Isnt the sand a bit to brownish ?
Cheers

With apologies to all the other highly talented terrain builders, but that is now officially my most favourite ever terrain board.

Stunningly beautiful work!

Very well done Cap'n, but please don't rest on your laurels - there is plenty more terrain out their that needs reproducing in 28mm  :D

Thanks everybody. It's a labour of love, that's for sure!
(Figure painting takes a back seat whilst terrain building!)

what is the flock you used for the grass effect?

First a layer of Woodland Scenics turf - I mixed fine grade and medium grade - in burnt grass colour. This is sprayed with scenic cement (watered down PVA glue) to seal it, and then a second layer is sprinked on top of that in patches. This time, for the second layer, add some medium green static grass and a little lighter coloured flock. Then pray again with sealer. This gives the effect of of lush patches of grass here and there amongst the grassy areas.

The low level vegetation / scrub, is formed from Woodland Scenics 'clump foliage' or 'bushes' (it's all the same stuff, just dyed fragments of broken up foam) in olive green and light green, some little bits and pieces of lichen, and grass tufts in various colours. These items are all just attached with a touch of superglue.

Here are a couple more pics which show some close up detail of the surface textures...

Very nice Cap'n. Hopefully I will get the chance to pop off a few Z's on it at BLAM.

Thanks Björn. I'm not sure about the colour to be honest. I tried to go for a red-brown coloured ground, but the colour reproduction on my camera isn't that reliable. I think this pic shows it closest to the actual colour. But I've never been to South Africa so I don't know  :)

Fantastic!  :) :-* It's been a pleasure watching this board come together. Lots of handy tips picked up along the way too. As GM said, looking forward to seeing this at BLAM.

A wonderful gaming table. I especially like the rift valley, the rocks are looking natural.
The overall colour is quite different from what I´ve seen recently, but I like it.

Can't add much more then what has been said already - but I must comment.

Amazingly lifelike and brilliantly executed.

Congratulations on an amazing piece of work!
