2nd Edition Black Goat Playtest Discussion
« on: January 29, 2015, 12:09:02 AM »
I'll be distributing a no-frills beta version of the 2nd Edition Rulebook shortly to those members of the Cult of the Black Goat that backed the Kickstarter campaign, and have created this thread as an area for everyone to discuss their playtesting experience.  While only about 50 Backer-Cultists are directly involved in the test, anyone and everyone should feel free to throw out any thoughts or questions.

To answer a question that's been put forward by several of you: this test group is restricted to those backers who were already Black Goat Cultists before the Kickstarter campaign launched.  Because we offered exactly the same package of models to both existing Cultists and those who joined during the campaign, we felt we should extend an additional bonus to our longest-standing supporters.  We're keeping the discussion public though, so everyone can see what's going on - even if you can't play the new version just yet, you'll at least be able to see and discuss some of the new goodies in the book.

Also, based on our current estimates it looks like I'll be able to provide all of our backers (well, except the $1 ones, of course) with the PDF edition of the finished rulebook at least a month before the actual shipping date, if not sooner!

There won't be a public beta.  Kickstarter backers and pre-order customers will get the PDF as soon as it's finalized, which should be at least a month before the books ship (still targeted for August).  Once all that fulfillment is sorted, we'll move to regular retail sales.

Thanks for the pdf. I'll definitely read it, but I don't know if I have the time to actually play...I'm pretty busy lately.

Been reading the PDF when I can, so here is one of my first thoughts to drop out:

Flamethrowers: Should they not have the Dangerous Rule? Chainsaws, Dynamite and Molotov have this rule....to me a big tank of fuel and a hose spraying it may be a bit of a hazard to use.

From a purely semantic perspective, yes, flamethrowers are dangerous.  The Dangerous rule is very specifically applied to things that you can inadvertently blow up if you light the fuse wrong or botch your throw though.  Flamethrowers are more at risk from outside hazards, like a direct shot to the fuel tank.  A rule to reflect that would look more like:

Volatile - Shooting Critical hits against a target carrying this weapon gain an additional +1 damage over and above the normal Critical bonus

The Flamethrower doesn't really need anything to make it less effective though.  It may look nasty on the page, but even with the damage boost from what it had in 1st Ed it's actually fairly difficult to use.  If anything, its best application is to force your opponent to keep their models spread out to minimize the impact of the template.

i would add a chance for it to explode when the model gets killed off by shooting at it

I love that volatile rule and the idea of explosions would be fun as well. This rule with chance of explosions might also be added to the Advanced rules when trying to destroy inanimate objects. Whenever you try to destroy a Fuel Container (oil drum, gassoline cannister or maybe even a car or generator), you get a change of an explosion which would hurt/ kill anyone hiding nearby.
