Messing with 3d printing - Building pieces. January

I've started checking out zbrush and using it to make some 3d models. After watching some tutorials I've been getting better faster. Defintitley easier than pushing putty at the moment but more to learn in regards to putting different pieces together.
So far I've spent the last hour or so working on this face. I got to this stage after about a half hour but then added in some bits that I then deleted because it looked dumb, I tried to add teeth but think I'll make them separately and fit them onto the sculpt. Will need to check out a tutorial for doing that.
First proper try and I've been working on a scaly for necromunda. So this is the head. Just messing about at this stage. Hopefully things will get better much quicker. I may need a better computer as this one is pretty useless and slow.

Sculpted a basilisk, pr at least tried to.

Printed at 150 microns so not great resolution. hasnt turned out too  well but happy enough.

So you have learned to use the software from tutorials, any previous experience with similar 3d modelling software?

Mostly from tutorials. No previous experience with sculpting on computers, just google sketchup which doesn't really count. I found a way to cut the sculpt into smaller parts using netfabb. So I'm currently printing the last piece of a 50micron print about 50% larger in length than this. It looks much better. I can actually make out the eye sockets on it. I think next I'll make the sculpt even more detailed by splitting the polygons again. That way I should be able to define the teeth more and maybe add some more details like spines and so on. I'll take another pic once I've fully assembled the monster. Should be another hour or so for the next print to finish, possibly two.

Here is the improved print. I need to fill the edges of it to make that look nicer for painting but this guy should look good crawling through a cavern.


Still a bit of cleanup needed as well.

So you have your own 3D printer?

Yep, backed it on kickstarter about 2 (3?) years ago and it finally arrived about a month ago. $400 USD delivered.

I clicked on this expecting to see rather a different sort of Basilisk. 

Nice work though. Shame the printer curved the limbs inward a bit.

Lol, maybe I should change the title to fantasy basilisk.

Sculpted a spider today. In between looking after the kids, playing a game of Heroquest with them (which I guess is also looking after the kids) Took me about 3 hours all up. Learnt a lot from sculpting this guy. The inflate tool is very useful. Could have had more definition on the legs as it kind of looks like it's wearing tights or something, but then again its going to be a miniature so...

After printing this one I'll be redoing the legs as it doesn't look right with only a knee and ankle joint. More sections will be added.

Resculpted the legs, took it back about 150 undos or was it 500, then put new legs on. Recut the thorax and abdomen and am reprinting the abdomen. The first print of the thorax (or cephalothorax, whatever it's called) looked really good, Super happy with it.

Decent stuff. I'd maybe go with a bit deeper details, to see if they print out clearer, but the overall shape looks great.

The veins probably need to be bigger. They look veiny on here but I doubt they will show up at all on the print. Still all good practice THanks for the comment.

Now printing the first set of four legs.
I've made a more mutant version of it as well. I'll probably print these ones off pretty small. The current one is huge but looking good.
Mutant spider has pustules growing out of it. One eye popped as well and just looking like a pus bag really.
