I like how quick of a setup it is and how easy it is to slide around the cavern rooms with all the props on it without disturbing anything.  Imagine trying to do that with a million little dwarven forge tiles.. like build the dungeon on the fly as the players explore it.. this usually requires some sliding around of things as they progress through it.  So easy with this and not too many bits to setup for each room.. just a stalagmite here and there or whatever else.  You can have a pile of stalagmites sitting there on the table that you draw from.

If one really wants to use this system for his or her cavern, and say doesn't have the Hirst arts stalagmite molds, doesn't have a 3D printer nor wants to craft them.. there is an affordable solution.

Dwarven Forge stalagmite pack -- unpainted it is about 45 quid.

I am thinking about getting it myself for some more variety.. Just one pack.

Have you considered a bit of edging of the tiles? Unless you're planning on combining small into large, a suggestion of upcurve-to-walls would make 'em snap, though add more work to the work I'm not attempting anyway.

And, no, I've not read the entire thread; what kind of curmudgeon would I be if I gathered all the facts?

The very idea!

Working on some sculpey shrooms.

I spent like 5 minutes on these four using just the back end of a pocket knife and the ends of two different brushes.

I'll have my cavern filled with shrooms in no time! :)

Cost is like 2 cents per shroom I am estimating.

Cavern Archway

So I need several of these 3 inch wide, about 3 inch tall Cavern Archways and don't feel like making them out of sculpey.

So I sculpted it in Blender today.  I am printing it now.  I'll make available after I've printed this one and painted it.

Cavern Archway is complete.  I made it available for free on Thingiverse.com.

I somehow missed this thread. Very inspirational. Thanks Jennifer. I backed a Kickstarter 3d printer. Which should arrive in a month or 2 so I will steal borrow some ideas.

Cheers,

Cool! Looks like 3-D printers are becoming more and more popular. DM Scotty just bought one. I wonder if Mel the terrain tutor  has got one yet. I'm sure he has.

Printing off a second archway now.

Got my first Hirst Arts molds in the mail today.  Water Cavern #81 and #82.  Can't wait to start casting.  Never done this before! :)

Additionally, I am sure most of you already know this.  YOu can buy like 2 casts of #81 (in hydrostone) for $5 plus shipping on ebay.  Same for cast #82.    If you order a bunch at one time I am sure the shipping would be quite affordable.   Can get quite a pile of these gorgeous looking stalagmites for these cavern tiles, for fairly cheap.

Also without the time and mess of casting them yourself.

Idea for plaster casting: add some black pigments to the plaster mix to make them dark grey in colour. I think it is nigh unavoidable to get chipping on plaster casts... And nothing is more annoying than those stark white chips. With some pigment it will be dark grey.

Good idea thanks.  Would it stain my molds?

No. Even if it did it would not affect your use of the mold.  My suggestion to you is to spend out for a strong plaster such as Hydrostone or Merlin's Magic.  Plaster of Paris will not stand up to any use whatsoever no matter how much you try to stabilize the surface.  You can tint the plaster but in my experience since it does not make much difference since once cast a chip will look like a chip.  Hope that helps.
