Ok, so back on the nuke. A Kinder brand egg. Questions on that. Where is "Kinder" from? Is it a German company? Cant say i have heard of em before, or the secret egg. Is it an Easter thing or an all year round thing? Just me being curious.  :-)

Kinder Surprise are actually Italian (despite the German-sounding name), but seem to be available all over Europe (we've had them here in Blighty since I was a nipper).

Basically a chocolate egg (brown chocolate on the outside, white on the inside: Some of the nicest chocolate I've ever had that wasn't the posh Belgian sort). Inside is a little plastic 40s atom bomb-shaped egg with a surprise toy in it (often some kind of snap-together kit).

The toys inside change over time, and they sometimes have themed ones. Not seasonal, available all year round.

The plastic inners are great for scratch building. While I loved the chocolate, my response to the toys was usually "Ah, a shitty plastic toy, that's the surprise" (which is paraphrasing the old advertisements for the product).

But a word of warning! Those yellow plastic capsules (the old ones, haven´t yet worked on a new one) use a polyethylen plastic which is rather difficult to glue and paint. Using those pieces works best if you can place them where they won´t get touched or scratched (I used one for a steam engine on a Landship, for example). Otherwise, roughen up the surface, or maybe cover with some thinned-down model filler prior to painting. The plastic shell I used for the bomb was easily base-coated using clear varnish.

You may wish to try competitor´s offers (ie, knockoffs of the Ferrero/Kinder eggs), if you can find them, that is. I once got a shell which was 8-sided, perfect for VSF boilers.

The Kinder Surprise stuff is available in Canada, but not in the US, probably to avoid lawsuits from kids eating the eggs whole and choking on the capsules.

 :D :D :D

Some of the toy bits are very useful too for post apocalyptic rubble.

Car tires, bits of furniture, teddybears and other useless crap can be recycled for post-urban barricades.
