Which Modern Ruleset?
« on: 03 May 2016, 09:40:56 PM »
I apologise as this has probably been done to death but.

Having just bought Danger Close as a download to add to Black Ops and At Close Quarters can anyone recommend a modern skirmish ruleset?

It seems D20s are popular! Bolt Action has a great system and I have thought of getting the A Team to kidnap Alessio Cavatore and Rick Priestley but they are hard to find! ( I mean the gaming genius's).

I would like to skirmish using different troops from my collection so I dont really want a region specific set....also simple is good as I play solo.

Thanks guys I know the answer is out there.

O S C from Evil Bear Wargames, there's a review in this forum.

Fast and fun but not simplistic

No end in sight ! Great indie ruleset, with modern and inovative gameplay.

Flying Lead from Ganesha Games. My personal favourite. No actual solo rules though, but I do believe there are solo players who use them. Very adaptable, give a good result and their site supports a 'squad builder'. Best at under 20 figures a side, ideal at about ten.

A fair few of the Two Hour Wargames rules are designed for solo play, as well as co-op or standard play. Some people think the action-reaction tests interrupt play too much, others think they are fantastic... so mileage might vary.

Thanks Chaps I have something to go on now.....I am not a fan of too many reaction tests....common sense should prevail really.

I didn't see that you were searching for a solo game. Then Arlequin is right, you should also take a look on last chain reaction rules (CR2015) too !

I use Force on Force, with the old 1st Edition Ambush Alley rules for insurgent reactions for solo games. Can be a bit heavy at times where numerous reactions are involved, but it's a great system that I feel really represents modern combat.

Have you considered writing your own? I was struggling to find a ruleset I liked for 6mm moderns, and in the end put together something to suit my needs. It started as 2 pages of scribbled rules, which have slowly been refined through trial and error to give me the gameplay I was after.

FoF is good but is better for platoon size games, and yes it is complicated where lot of action/reaction is on the table...

Force on force is amazing but it gets too complicated for solo play.....having said that it did ignite my interest in the modern period. I have the Danger close which on reading is getting better each time. Does anyone else use this set? Are there lists or a web page for them?

Cheers Hellraiser, I am possibly a simpleton as I prefer "normal" dice....D10 is pretty close I will investigate these closer. Thank you.

I have Black Ops and I would like to see a "standard" version of it. Maybe it is worth a supplement to Osprey because it seems fairly popular?
