If we don't count random left-over plastic sprues (the kind you don't plan on building but hold onto for bits later) I'm probably happily in the 100 club thanks to a hell of a year and a half of painting.

Last weekend I found figures I'd straight-up forgotten I owned, and I wasn't even into the really deeply buried strata of the lead/resin/plastic mountain!

Phew, just based on the number of unpainted armies I own, multiplied by a couple of hundred figures each... I must be approaching high thousands!

Are we talking any particular scale. Hundreds of 10mm doesn't seem so bad. Presumably this is unpainted. Once painted they cease to be a burden in my view 

A sobering application to the lead mountain is working out your average  painting output and project how long your current mountain will take to finish. You might find you will be a ripe old age assuming you don't buy anymore!

Having decided to totally concentrate on my own twisted version of the Back of Beyond that includes Pulp and WWI and Darkest Africa and Island South East Asia I have kept it to under 500. Mind you there is the odd modern in there that I need to dispose of.

I think I'm in the 500-1000 range, but to be honest, I don't really know.

I might well have surpassed the 1000 mark, but since my storage space apparently has the physical attributes of a Superior Bag of Holding (Superior Shelf of Holding?), I've never had to enlarge my storage area; every time a purchase arrives, I can fit it in there.

That, or I'm just really good at playing live Tetris!

Scale's a good point. I have loads of 6mm and 10mm lying about unpainted, but I'm considering one block of figures to be equivalent to one 28mm figure. If it's each individual 6mm figure, I probably ticked the wrong box

Then I certainly ticked the wrong box, as I have the Space Marine 1st ed, 2nd ed and Epic boxes kicking around with some extras. There certainly are more than 1000 minis in those alone...

It depends of what...

Of boxes/projects I'm oh less than 20.

Of individual figs/castings well... <Cough> likely in the 10,000+ Those 15mm figs and 6mm things soon add up. I call it my lead retirement saving plan.

Now equally I have several thousand painted as well. I recently counted that I have approx. 1500 painted 15mm ECW figs alone. My 2 Napoleonic armies likely combine to something similar as well.

but its well into several thousand little things mostly in 28mm...

of course mostly not metal now - but the leaded contingent will still get me well past the first thousand, at least.

Years of dedication, hard work and innovation in storage.

In retrospect that does sound quite a lot.
