Technically the Shield Gate in Rogue One, is actually a space station, but I wanted to doublecheck with Jim before I posted my entry, that it was ok, due to its "links to flight" - apart from hovering above the planet, it also has loads of fighter hangers, plus docking stations for larger space craft.
I'm going to have a go at building one in 1/2256 to fit with my existing Star Wars project.
The following image is from Mel Miniatures (on shapeways), and is a decent graphical representation of the layout, whereas mine will look more like a frisbee that has been mauled by a Rottweiler..... the image below is white because that's the material that Shapeways print in, but the actual station is more of a light grey in colour., like a star destroyer.

At that scale, what size will it be?
-
Great 8)
cheers
James
-
Good grief, that's one big Rottweiler!
This should be good 8)
-
this will be awesome
-
At that scale, what size will it be?
Details....details.... :D
I'm guesstimating the station is about 1200 metres across, so the model will be roughly 21" in diameter give or take (not including the sticky out bits) in 1/2256 scale.
-
After seeing Rogue One yesterday Im totally into Star Wars again. So keep on, Im pretty excited to see how this will turn out!
-
Quite a task ahead of you :o
But I'm sure you can do it and we get to enjoy the show :D
-
I am really looking forward to seeing this built!
:D

THAT's going to be nice...

Couple more screenshots...
X-wings ducking down to avoid what looks like flak towers on the top left....
From the game...more flak towers around the outer edge. Not sure what is on the outlying pylon, but may well be yet more flak towers, as it would give more coverage...? :?

Another shot from Battlefront... Can see some of the six hangars, plus what look like larger anti-ship weapons on the gallery above them. Not sure what the domes are on the central gate cradle....something to do with the gate itself, or possibly another type of flak tower...??

They're dome shaped sci-fi things I reckon.

They could have something to do with generating a shield large enough to encircle a planet? :)

They could have something to do with generating a shield large enough to encircle a planet? :)
Nonsense: They're just greeblies the guys found lying around and thought they would look cool...
-
They could have something to do with generating a shield large enough to encircle a planet?
:D indeed, they may well be exactly that....if so, it's a bloody daft design - after all, why bother trying to attack the gate, when you could just take out the pylons (that generate the planetary wide shield) which are outside of the shield, and away from the actual defences on the gate itself....? But then that is exactly what the Empire seems to do with its star destroyer deflector shields....they can't all be designed by disgruntled engineers surely?
Nonsense: They're just greeblies the guys found lying around and thought they would look cool...
Again, this is a real possibility lol
For now, I'll think of them as greeblie shield pylons.
-
For now, I'll think of them as greeblie shield pylons.
Maybe they are greeblie shield _anchor_ pylons, to keep the station in place and aligned with the shield so the gate works properly.
-
Ok, so to the build......
The basic shape is essentially a series of circles at different heights, so I'm going to use a framework, and add the rest of the structure onto it.
The frame will consist of a handful of wooden hoops, taken from some sort of upholstery set that one of my daughters had for textiles at school.....haven't seen it used lately, so they've now found their way into my games room :D
Before I started the actual build, the first step was to build a temporary cradle for the framework to sit upon. For now I've glued the hoops to the cradle to fix them in place, but it will be easy to remove later on, once the whole structure is more rigid.
The outer hoop is 18" diameter, the middle 14" and the inner "brackets" are from a 10" hoop....I think there might be a larger one somewhere, so if I find it, it will also mysteriously vanish from the house, and reappear in my games room.
-
Very nifty solution. 8)
And I wholeheartedly approve of stealing from the kids. lol
-
:'( Poor daughter
It looks promising though...
-
good start
-
In order to make the various bits of foam board fit the frame, I'll be scoring the underside to give them a bit more flexibility to fit what is a curved structure.
It took a couple of trial and error attempts to get something that felt right for the hangar bays....I'm building something as a gaming piece, rather than a diorama, so it needs to be practical with the models I'm using it with. The top flat level is a gallery for what will be anti-ship weapons - I will need to fill in the stepped level, to give a smoother, angled surface, or face it all up with card to give a sloped surface.
The scored quarter circle of foamboard is secured to the cradle with pins, while the glue drys, and then can be trimmed to fit the curved shape of the station. It probably all looks a bit untidy at the moment - it's all about the basic structure and shape at this stage, the rest can be trimmed to size, or hidden once I get to layering the exterior surface. Likewise I need to tidy up some of the curves...a lot to do....
The cradle is coming into its own now, as the floor of the hangar bay is secured directly to it. As the cradle is foamboard, I can carve away at it, as necessary.

Seriously though, excellent progress. Looks like very neat/precise cutting. 8)

A quick lighting test on the hangar bays. Should sort out the light leakage once I've added some layering to the structure, and sealed everything. It also helps point out defects for the "tidy up" list.

A small update.
Made some turbolaser towers
(http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh72/AKULADEEP/Scariff%20Shield/image_zpsmibrn1ab.jpeg)
Now that the glue has dried, I've trimmed the sloped sections to fit the curve if the central "brackets". The two roof sections for the hangars aren't attached, they are just loosely placed to give a better idea of the shape. I've also popped half a dozen of the turbolasers (primed grey) onto the left hand side of the model, to show the approximate position of where the anti-ship turrets would go....I actually like the turbolasers so I may well stick with them, haven't made my mind up yet.
To give an idea of scale, I've included a couple of 1/2256 craft in this photo (they aren't part of the build, just here to show the size of the hangars). As you can see the x-wing (balanced in the centre of the "brackets") is tiny in comparison to the size of the gate. Also, as mentioned previously, my model is meant to be a gaming piece, so I've made the sloped section from the hangars down to the bracket, less steep that originally planned, as I want to be able to rest fighter bases on it (otherwise it's ungameable).

that looks awesome!!! Have you thought about building the props for Disney?

They are quite dinky...
This evening I've been mostly tidying up rough edges - will make a start on the V-beams tomorrow.
:)

Great start mate! :o

Rough edges?!?!?! :o lol Matt your work is always so neat!
Great progress and very inspirational 8)

Great and fast work with the shield gate! 8)

Thanks all...it feels like everytime I take tiny steps forward, I seem to add more things to the "to-do" list.
Some minor detailing out of card...

A start on the anti-ship guns, which still need tidying up...
...and a start on the V beams, six down twenty-two more to go. Once I've added the facing to the hoop, it should hide the untidy finish on the beams.

Ooh, me likey. Now to do one in 1/1000 scale about 2 meters across. ;)

That's the sort of progress that gets Deathstars built. Vader would be pleased with your efforts!

You are certainly cracking on with this*.

Easy, Tiger!

My first thought was that if I get stuck, and run out of time, was to add a tiny Darth Vader, inspecting the lack of progress and call it a diorama... lol
Just found the missing hoop, so I can get on with the next stage.
-
Looking great! The precision required for this to look correct is probably beyond my patience but I certainly appreciate it in others,

Great work on the V struts. 8)
I can't see any pencil marks: are you working by eye?
-

All by eye. The hoops aren't perfectly round, so there is a substantial degree of "making it fit".
I made a few test pieces and measured it all out by trial error, to come up with something that looks ok.
:)
-
Excellent. It's come out very well. 8)

"Looks ok" he says! That's some accurate cutting mate :-*
BTW if you're lighting this, you'll need to light the rest of your SW stuff! ;)
-
BTW if you're lighting this, you'll need to light the rest of your SW stuff! ;)
Ha..trying to resist that particular temptation...although for a 29" Imperial Star Destroyer, I could be tempted....less so for a 3mm tie fighter :D
-
Now.....where's the commitment?!? ;)
-
I've added the extra hoop (21" in diameter) which will give a bit more rigidity to the end model.
The V beams are also now done...well, they need a tidy, but you get the idea. As mentioned previously, although they may look it on the photos, the hoops aren't perfectly round, so I've had to use a few little wedges of wood here and there to get a proper fit. The untidiness should be at least partially hidden when I add the facings to the hoops.
The hangar hoods still aren't attached...I need to sort the lighting out first, and prime the hangar bays before attaching them.

:o :o :o. At least wait until after the competition is over....
Quick update, early lunch break, so I'm going to add a bit more detailing. Have polyfillered the step between the anti-ship gun gallery, and the roof of the hangar, to smooth it out, and then added the AS guns.
Also adding some foamboard brackets (top left of photo) between the 18" and 21" hoops to provide more rigidity - will also be handy when I add the lighting in - the gap between these two hoops will eventually be covered over, so the wiring will be hidden.
Bottom right of the photo is a zeta class cargo ship from Mel Miniatures (Shapeways) which fits in pretty well.

Not me, mate.
But you know what those rebellious types are like.....
-
This evening's work consisted of the rough cut for the top facings - again, will need to tidy up, as its a lot rougher than the photo shows
:?
The thin strip on the V-beam sections will hold a whole bunch of turbo laser turrets.
So far only the thin strips are glued down - the rest is just to give an idea of what is will look like, I need to sort out the wiring for the hangars before anything else gets secured. Once all of the top facings are attached, I can then finish shaping them.

This is already looking amazing! :o
-
Thanks guys, I'm enjoying the build.
Making the cradle was definitely worthwhile, as its avoided any shifting during the construction phase, and although the hoops aren't perfectly round, they have been a great help as well, as its given me a framework.

Looks Great!

Is it too much that I'm expecting it to hover? :D

lol
Y'know, I actually have some that will do that. Perks of the new job n'all.
-
I can see that every build from now on will have to magnets AND lights.... lol
Quick update:
Have fitted the wiring in for the hangar lights. Using a plug and play system similar to the one I used for my Dune project, as its reliable and offers me lots of different lighting options. I only had to make minimal alterations to the setup, as the wiring can run through the gap between the 21" & 18" hoops, as this will all be covered over by foamboard. The batteries will sit on a shelf underneath, so I may need a counterweight on the opposite side.
Next up, i will have to paint prime the hangar bay, as I won't be able to reach the back once the roof is secured.
-
Hangars are primed, the outer shell is now attached, and I've cut the two indentations where the large docking pylons are.
Next, I need to seal the edges with polyfiller/glue, smooth out those rough bits, and then start adding the exterior detail, docking ports, shield pylon gribblies, turbo lasers, and add the extra bits to the brackets....simple.
-
That will be a glorious centrepiece to any tabletop! :D
-
That will be a glorious centrepiece to any tabletop! :D
Thanks mate....if I ever get it finished. My todo list seems to get longer, the more I do to it....
Have just sanded the edges I'd sealed with polyfiller - no photo, so just look at the photo above, and imagine it slightly smoother ....
;)
Going to search my bits box, and probably poundland/B&Q for inspiration for the shield generator gribblies.....I need c60 of them, so some sort of widget, or beads maybe? Also need a bit of thinking time for the pylons themselves - I'm going to make them detachable for ease of storage/transport as they stick out from the main model.
-
Ok, so I think I've solved the problem of how to make the numerous shield generators that are dotted around the space station (56 of them).
A 8mm dowel sawed in half is about the right size (just bigger than a turbolasers) and I like the corrugated pattern, which looks sufficiently Sci-fi for my purposes.
-
Good idea. Another option are cut down drywall anchors.
-
Started on the first shield generator pylon.
Once again, the hoops are a big plus - the pylon will be detachable for transport/storage, as it is just sitting on the hoop, and tucks in under the foamboard exterior facing. The pegs are just while it dries....
;)

a really great looking model

I really like the way you've recreated the key features from the movie in miniature form by re-imagining everyday objects. Lovely work mate, just lovely.
-
Cheers everyone, it is going better than I'd hoped for so far.
It really helps seeing so many inspirational projects all in one place - I haven't got Andym's wizardry with plasticard, Silent Invaders skill with green stuff, or JohnnyTodd's mastery of woodcraft, but I hope to pick up a few tips, and improve.
:)

Thanks, they are a bit more fiddily to cut than I thought they would be, already had me cursing a few times tonight. If I hadn't have stumbled across them my original thought was beads, but the dowel seems to work ok.
I'm sure your going to be tired of me saying this.....but that's brilliant! :-*
Coming from you, that is praise indeed - i'll let you know if it gets tiresome ;) :D

They work really well.

Thanks mate, as with everything it's a compromise, but like you say by reducing the slope on the space between the hangars and the ( ) it keeps it as gaming space.

Thanks Mick, I'm watching your own thread with interest.
:)

Have got all four pylons sorted now. The indents aren't quite tidy yet, but this will get sorted once I add the surface detail to the foamboard.
I've also cut away the central part of the cradle now, so I can work on the central ( ) area.
The two large > < are the start of the docking stations for imperial ships, anything from a Vindicator/Immobiliser sized cruiser, all the way up to a pair of Imperial Star Destroyers.... they need more work, grappling arms added, detailing etc....
-
Now I've cut back the cradle, I can start working upon the central ( ) area
I've got some leftover hoop sections, and will use these to ensure that the vertical part of the ( ) brackets keep their shape. The basic shape is cut from 3mm foamboard (I've used 5mm for the rest of the build), which I've then scored every half inch to give it more flexibility.

Very impressive build already! 8)
-
I'm really digging how this is taking shape. Very inventive use of the dowels and other gegaws as well. :)
-
Have attached the curved foamboard to the brackets, with pegs, while the glue sets.
Tomorrow will look at some of the additional detailing.

I've have tried the LEDS again....to be honest, I've also been making pew pew noises, and playing the Imperial March very loudly in my games room.... please tell me I'm not the only big kid on here..??
:D
There is still quite a bit of light spillage, but I hope that a combination of the extra surface detailing, and a couple of layers of paint will minimise the leakage. If not, the light system I'm using allows me to vary the brightness, so I can always dial it down a bit.
Nice shapes. The hoops were an impressive solution. 8)
Thanks, I certainly wouldn't have made the progress I have, without them (and the cradle).
This is an education...
Well, I'm certainly learning things as I go - there are loads of inspirational threads on here, so all credit to Jim for running the Build Something Contest.
I have had an idea about the base, but I'll need to ponder it a bit more.
-
Probably the least exciting update so far.....more shield generator gribblies, and cursing while cutting the dowel in half.
The tab is so that I can glue them to the underside of the outer layer of foamboard.
Bit more tidying up....

Thinking about adding some tie fighters to the hangars (not with lights before anyone asks), plus want to make a start on the detailing of the top facings....

Made a start on the detailing, trouble is my OCD is kicking in....the more I add, the more untidiness I see.

Make a "perfect" stencil and use that to determine it?
-
Thanks guys, will try and put my OCD back in its perfectly formed box for now.
:)
Managed to get the other side done (the messy grey bit is from priming the hangars before I sealed the top facing).
One thing I've decided, is to make the rest of the detailing much more random, so I don't get constantly hung up on symmetry.
Off to football shortly, but hope to get more done this evening.

That last photo really shows off how much detail you're putting into it.
Quality 8)

No real idea what it is but it looks great!

It is really taking shape now, instantly recognisable.

Thinking about adding some tie fighters to the hangars (not with lights before anyone asks)....
Now that I've seen this......I think you should, y'know. ;D
-
Coming along superbly. So will you be doing Ties or will they be too small?
-
Thanks everyone, will keep plugging away, work permitting.
Coming along superbly. So will you be doing Ties or will they be too small?
Tie fighters are a couple of millimetres across in this scale - I might make some, time permitting, but failing that I've got a handful off of shapeways I could use.
This evening's progress is more small bits of wood stuck onto a bigger piece of foamboard while I slowly lose what remains of my mind....
;D

Sanity is overrated. It's all worth of it ;D
-
This is going to be some piece when it's finished. Epic is overused but I think it's going to apply here.
-
:-* It's random but not random... !
-
I wish I was at the detailing phase with my build lol
Looks better and better with every pic.
-
Bits and pieces! :o 8) 8) 8)
How thick are the bits of wood? I'm developing a taste for going mental.
-
That is getting just the right 'gribbly' effect.
8) 8)

Looking cracking! :-* Why are you using bits of wood to detail? Why not plastic card?
-
Cheers all.

It's only about 1mm thick.
Looking cracking! :-* Why are you using bits of wood to detail? Why not plastic card?
It's a case of what I've got to hand - it's very fine basswood so it's flexible, cuts incredibly easily, and has virtually no grain.
-
Thanks - I might copy that :D
-
Sanity is overrated!!! :D
It's really quite awesome how adding 'randomly organised' little bits brings it to life. 8)

Looking great!!!

That does look very star-wars like, excellent work there. :)
-
Been away for a couple of days for work again, but got a bit more detailing done last night....more bits of wood, plus another layer of foamcard onto the back of the ( ) section.
Still lots more to do....and I need to factor in time to paint it as well.....

Great work!
I may have missed this somewhere, but how big is it?

How many cans of white spray do you think it'll need?

Great work!
I may have missed this somewhere, but how big is it?
The main station, is the "frisbee" is 23" (59cm) diameter, but from the tip of one pylon, to the opposite pylon is 34" (87cm).
I've taken a photo with a Revell Venator, for reference purposes (not part of the build), again in 1/2256 scale.
How many cans of white spray do you think it'll need?
Haven't even thought that far ahead, but now you mention it, I'd better get some more paint in - will prime it light grey, and then highlight, as per my other Star Wars models.
Still plenty to do before I get to that stage....more detailing, finish the bracket, finish the docking arms, add the turbo lasers....the list goes on.
-
OMG :o I forgot how big it was. GO, GO, GO :D
-
OMG :o I forgot how big it was. GO, GO, GO :D
Totally this! :o
You need to show it against a well recognised 28mm miniature! We really need to be able to appreciate the amount of work you've put in to it!
-
slacker ;)
-
You are going to detail and light the interior of the command deck, right? ::)
-
Added just over 100 more little squares to the model, each 6mm in size.... beginning to go slightly nuts.... I've also removed the cradle, as the brackets are study enough to support the station, until I sort out a large enough base.

Ive added a 25mm WEG Darth Vader to the next photo (sorry not 28mm but he seemed appropriate) ....he is the black dot just to the right of the centre...

Already done. Unfortunately as the hull is already sealed down you'd have to really small to see it.
;)
-
That's looking amazing!
-
That's no moon!....... :o
-
As much as I'm enjoying the build, I need to start thinking about how long the painting will take.
I'm going to do my best to finish the detailing in the next few days - as a priority, I have to finish the central ( ) bracket section, which needs tidying up....the temptation is to just keep on adding details but then I will run out of time.
For the base I've got a piece of acrylic being cut to size.... I don't have the tools or skills to do this myself, so hopefully that is ok otherwise I'll just give it a smaller temporary base for the contest and swop it out afterwards.
-
It's looking fabulous 8)
I don't see how having the flight stand cut for you would or could be a breach of the rules: you have put so much time into the build that the commercial element must be negligible. :)
-
.... beginning to go slightly nuts....
i'm not sure you're really trying hard enough if you're only beginning... ;D
Do carry on, I'm still loving this.
-
I don't see how having the flight stand cut for you would or could be a breach of the rules: you have put so much time into the build that the commercial element must be negligible. :)
I thought as much, but I can always swop it out if it causes a problem.
Haven't kept a log of how much time I've spent on it, but I've gone through two seasons of Stargate, and three seasons of Battlestar Galactica, while I've been building it.
i'm not sure you're really trying hard enough if you're only beginning... ;D
Well..I haven't done anything really daft lately, but then again I do have a few other projects to work on once this is finished, which might push me over the edge....I guess it's all relative really.
:D
-
I don't have a problem with you getting a flight stand cut, it's no different to buying a base for a figure. I'm sure most of the others would say the same.
-

Well, it's a lot bigger....cheers though!
:)
-
I wouldn't think getting a base cut, counts. If anything it may count toward bought/pre-manufactured bits for the build.
-
Home stretch...I think!
Got the ends of the gate ( ) brackets finished...

I stopped counting, but it's well in excess of 800, and possibly over 1000 little bits of wood/card so far.....
;D

That's a substantial build there. You never do things by half do you! 8)
If all else fails you could use it as a piece of wall art. ;) (that may actually be the best way to store it?)

I have been known to get carried away...now and again
:D
Not a bad shout on hanging it on the wall, although I'm a bit short of wall space, due to all the "stuff" already on the wall....
Well....I think it's finished....although I'm waiting on the base....and I might want to add a bit more when I look at it again tomorrow....

Pretty incredible stuff man. I'd love to see it on a table with lights going and what have you.

outstanding

Thanks all - now it's going to be a race against time to get it painted - working away loads, the next couple of weeks.
:?
-
Ok, so not finished just yet after all
;D
Given the theme is flight, I thought I'd better add some ships for the hangar bays....
I think I'm in safe ground that I'll be below the max 25% commercial limit as they are tiny - Shapeways tie fighters and shuttles.
I won't attach them just yet, as its easier to prime them before they are glued on, but I couldn't resist one photo.
Is it wrong to want to add a tiny Darth Vader, reviewing the progress...at this scale he'd be a grain of sand....?

I expect full articulation and a lit lightsaber. ;D
-
A grain of burnt black plastic would be an artistic touch. I hope you get this painted in time - it's 'uge!
-
Oh wow, this is immense AKULA!
Excellent work, and I wholeheartedly support the idea of including ol' Darth. Perhaps you could use a bit of optical fiber to give your black speck of sand a glowing lightsaber? :D
-
Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. The ships just finish it off nicely.
-
Fantastic!
I accidentally flicked between this page and page 1 and thought you had primed your model. It took me a few seconds to realise I wasn't looking at yours, that I was looking at the official one! Kudos to your accuracy! :o
-
Thanks everyone....apart from Damas and AWOL - No, I won't be lighting up Darth Vaders light sabre !!!!!
;) lol
Possibly the least exciting update yet.... I've got the base sorted.
I went with a frosted glass effect piece of acrylic, the idea being to give the impression of the force field that the space station acts as the gateway for during Rogue One.
It doesn't work quite as well on a black tablecloth, but I may end up having a planet image below it during games.
I just need to add the rods which the space station will sit on.....oh, and get on and prime it.
-
I was happy enough with the little transports being suck onto the gate.
Now it has a shield no less?! Might as well get lasers in there too. :)
-
So....have you been asked to do the special effects for 'The Last Jedi' yet? ;)
-
Thanks everyone....apart from Damas and AWOL - No, I won't be lighting up Darth Vaders light sabre !!!!!

Aoooww, you wound me, Sir! :'(
I notice that whilst you decline to light his lightsaber, you are still going to make him. :P
-
So....have you been asked to do the special effects for 'The Last Jedi' yet? ;)
I'd hope their budget would stretch to someone who isnt making it up as they go along
:D
By special request, from various posters on pg12, here is a photo of Darth Vader reviewing storm troopers in 1/2256 scale - still a wip.

Finished and primed - just needs painting now, so these are the last photos.
The base is now sorted, have added the rods.
The proportions for the docking clamps work well - shown here with an Immobiliser Cruiser, but they would work equally well with a Star Destroyer.
The moment of truth....the lighting test. The layer of undercoat has stopped the light leakage (it took 3 cans of primer). I then added some "lights" by using a pin to break the surface of the foamboard, to let through the light from the hangar bays.

I'm really enjoying watching all the other "Build Somethings" as they come to fruition.
I'd like to say a big thank you to Jim for running BSC 2017 - it's great to see so many inspiring projects in one place, at one time....
....oh, and finally.....
NO BOTHANS WERE HARMED IN THE MAKING OF THIS SPACE STATION.

Now onto the paint job.......

That's incredible Matt. I looked at the undercoated model and had to double check it wasn't a movie still. The pin prick lights are very effective. This is amazing.

Another brilliant entry Matt. 8) :-*
Excellent build thread of what must be the largest entry in any BSC so far. It really does look like a proper cinematic model build, better than all this modern CGI. (Even though I have never seen Rogue One) ::)
-
Immense barely covers it - this thing is insanely impressive. And the pinpricks of light has been an excellent addition, they add a lot to the model.
Following this has been a real treat, no mistake!
-
Stunning!
Absolutely stunning!

Thanks everyone, the foamboard made it incredibly easy to add the "lights", I just needed a pin.

Excellent build thread of what must be the largest entry in any BSC so far.
Honestly, it wasn't my intention to set any size records for BSC - it's my first go at an entry, and for me at least it's a pretty small build (at least compared to a 10' aircraft carrier or a 12' space ship).
I have to admit the 1000 or so parts was a bit insane, but I got a bit carried away....
:)

I did not have to search for them, they found me.
They are small small scenes from a huge mural at the Star Wars exhibition at the O2.
I could not resist chucking a few up here when I saw your 'disorderly Stormtroopers'.

Spooky. By a strange coincidence I've just booked a night in London for my wedding anniversary, and the hotel is next to the O2. I had planned on taking Mrs Akky out to a west end show, but I wonder if she'd settle for the Star Wars exhibit....
lol

Oooh, those will paint up very nicely if you get the blasters just so.
lol
I don't know about the stormtroopers, but at this rate I'm going to be cutting it quite fine for painting the actual station....I've been away from home for work, since Sunday afternoon, and get back Friday night. Hope to get a bit of time at the weekend if I'm lucky.
-
Back home, so on with the painting, no photos obviously. Going to mess about a bit more with taking some photos with different background light - the previous light test was in pitch black (ie night time with no lights on except those on the station itself) - obviously won't use any trickery to alter the photos.
Saw this post on Damas' excellent thread....
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=96701.75
Thanks everyone!
Now I know that the ship is 'finished', but I couldn't stop fiddling....
........I'll leave this for Akula to finish off. :D
It's encouraging how many mentalists there are on here....maybe we should do a group build at some point, if we can agree a theme?
-
Final photo (of the painted model) sent to the BSC email...only issue i found was trying to get a sense of scale...next time, I'll pick something that lends itself to a 28mm figure...
...maybe a 1/55 space station
;) ;D
Seriously though, I'm in awe of the quality of the builds in this contest....awesome work people.
8)
-
Next time, build it to 1:1 scale, then stand in it. That way we'll get a sense of the size of it. Going by your previous builds, that'll be a doddle for you! ;)

Thanks Chris. It has lights, but it doesn't rotate - I'm still waiting for your space station on a lazy Susan
;)

One plus of going out in the first round, is that at least I can now post a couple more photos .... one of the challenges I had was to try and show the size of the station...at over 80cm across its the centre piece of my Star Wars project.

That first photo nails the scale. Great piece of scratchbuilding, absolutely first class construction and finishing; totally love it. You really were in a group of death too!

this is gorgeous indeed :-* :-*

Fantastic! :o The pictures with the Star Destroyers really show the scale of the thing. I wish we could have seen them during the voting. Having all the wee ships beside it sets the scene! Amazing work mate! :-*

Thanks mate. I didn't think that it would be in the spirit of the rules to include the other ships - I know they aren't part of the actual model, so technically might not count as "25% manufactured", but they would be a distraction.
Like you say though, they give a sense of scale.
:)
-
I loved watching this build! A thing of beauty :-* :-* I hope that you get a lot of fun out of it gaming. After all that was what the contest was about, right? Just make sure that you keep the fellows with a bit of a load on and clutching a pint away from it :D
