Suspicious Tomb! An open tomb in Felsted is never a good thing. It can mean adventures have looted it or that its occupant has gone out for a bite to eat! I took a break from bronze to practice stonework. This is a resin piece I've had for years, it came out of a scratch and dent box in the 90s. The tombstones are by LeMax. I gave them a light dry brush of white. The fig on the left is from Ral Partha . I converted him into a tracker. The mini on the right is a not Lee Marvin from Artizan.

Bear Substitutes! It seems that bears make a formidable opponent and a valuable ally. Alas I have no bear figure. I did find some prehistoric mammals (purchased in a tube for a lost world game) that I thought could fill the bill. The first pic is a hyenadon, a proto hyena that could be 10 feet long. I washed the plastic fig with dark brown and dry brushed yellow brown. The next pic is a sabre tooth tiger . I did a bit of repainting, not entirely happy with it but it will do. The next photo is a giant ground sloth. They were the size of Kodiak bears and had formidable claws. I did a dark brown wash and a lighter brown dry brush. I also painted in the eyes and mouth. I've always thought of Frostgrave as an old city maybe Ice Age old. As the city defrosts the fauna are waking up hungry. By a happy coincidence all these beasts have the same stats as bears. The last photo shows scale. The person fig is a 28mm from West Wind.

They look like suitable bear substitutes to me.

The Tower of Steel (cut oats)! As I was tossing the empty cylinder of oatmeal into the recycling it occurred to me that it was a good size for a tower, perhaps a ruined tower in a frozen city. I've had the notion to convert these cylinders before but I was afraid they would look like a grade schoolers' diorama on the middle ages. Still nothing ventured ect. At worst I will have wasted some time, at best a new tower every couple of weeks! The Tower is shown in its earliest stages, I tried gluing cardboard to simulate stone work but the shiny paper on the outside shed the glue. I've spray painted it black and I'm hoping that will give enough texture for the glue to stick. Updates to follow!

Tower of Steel (cut oats) part 2! The weather has been rainy but I've finally managed to get the Tower spray painted. It improved the interior and added texture to the exterior. The paint also emphasized the seams on the outside. I had thought about incising stone work into the cardboard of the cylinder, now I'm going to add "stone" facing, made from scrap cardboard, to it. The fig is a 25/28 mm from Foundry. More on this build to come in... Part 3!

I've been thinking about making a similar tower. Have you thought about cladding the outside with bricks? Maybe using foam core or even just cut out squares of poster board? One way to hide the seam line of the container.

Tower of Steel (cut oats) part 3! Well Archmage 45 great minds and all.  :) The tower is getting a facing of thin corrugated cardboard rectangles to simulate stone. This project could be called, " It Came From The Recycling Bin". I decided the tower needed more damage so I cut out a hole  then realized it was too high up to be shot out of so I had to cut out another. Archmage if your going to make a tower like this cut the holes out before you put on the stone facing ( or at least wait for the glue to dry). I did not and the cardboard squares slid all over the tower! Now to finish the stone work and paint. More to come!

Tower of Steel (cut oats) part 4! I finished the "stonework" façade and gave the tower its base coat. I like the depth the cardboard provides for the stones  but now I've got to paint all the little squares' edges. As a proof of concept it holds up. I will be using oatmeal cylinders again but I'll  go with  smaller squares and rectangles of cardboard. I'm going to try finishing this piece over the holiday weekend, stay tuned.

Gnoll Chieftain (alt. fig.)! haven't had time to work on the tower but I did find this stand in for the Gnoll. It's an Anubis from Heroscape. I painted this a couple of years ago to be part of a Pulp adventure. When I saw the Gnoll Chietain on the Nickstarter I was struck by the resemblance.

Tower of Steel ( cut oats) finished! Longer than anticipated but done. I think using oatmeal tubes for towers is a viable option. I learned some lessons , do the damage to the tower before you glue on the stone work and glue the stone facade on before the first spray painting. I couldn't get the cardboard to stick to the glossy paper so I used the spray paint to provide texture, it worked but then I had to paint the edges of the cardboard to hide the corrugations. So boring! For the next one I'm going to take some sand paper to the glossy and see if that will do the trick. Still at the end of it all I have a ruined tower for very little money and I'm pleased with the results. The fig is a 28 mm. After the Holidays I'm hoping to post some AARs and a new crop of thugs and wizards.

New Elementalist! This fig is a converted Brigade Games Napoleonic French Savant. I added the flame( taken off a torch). This mini will be the apprentice to my already painted Major Malaise. For some reason while painting this fig I was reminded of the late great Don Knotts. So here is Deputy Fife, Elementalist. Over the holiday I was gifted with an order from Brigade that will add several new wizards and thugs.

It's Goleming Time! This Golem started out as a "Thing" toy found in a thrift store twenty five cent bin this week end. It was orange with blue shorts. I primed the fig dark grey then did a black wash and dry brushed it with progressively lighter shades. I think it makes a fine angry golem perfect for the Hunt for the Golem scenario. The mini in the second pic is a Westwind 28mm for scale.

In the first pic it looked huge, but he is fine. Good fit for the Hunt.

Frostgrave tabletop layout! It's 2 feet wide by 4 feet long. The board can be played as is or as separate 2 by 2 boards divided by a frozen canal( the blue Heroscape hexagons). The ruins are a collection of resin scenery pieces, holiday decorations, aquarium bits and a tower I made from an oatmeal tube. The first photo is a long shot from the left. The 2nd pic is a closeup of the left hand side and the 3rd pic is of the right.
