Jericho's 15th Century - Dismounted knights 04-03-'16
« on: December 06, 2015, 09:14:54 PM »
Greetings LAF,

I have been working (slowly) on the Swiss-Burgundian wars for the last few months. And I thought I'd start here with showing two vignettes I made somewhere last month after I got my required items at Crisis 2015.
One's a Swiss army standard bearer and the other is a Swiss champion showing off his best piece of cutlery.
Enjoy.

Really nice work- the Perry Late Medieval stuff per say really lends itself to putting together a vignette.

Thanks for the kind words, especially coming from some whose work definitely outshine mine  :)

While I'm still busy with the Swiss, I have also started with a Burgundian force to oppose them.
Of which I hope to have finished a small unit of pikemen by this weekend.

Cheers

That's ColgateTM for you  :)

Currently I'm wrestling through two units of Swiss cavalry (2,5 of twelve completed) but I just hate painting horses.
Although I do love the look of finished horse units...

To make matters worse my attention keeps switching to the Burgundians; mercenary Italian crossbowmen actually.
And for these I have a few questions which I hope some have an answer for.

1. How would these Italians have looked in the Burgundian army of the 1470s?

2. A sort of follow-up on number 1. Would the Burgundian army of the early 1450s have looked similar to that of Charles the Bold? Or would it have still looked more HYW in style?

3. Could/Would a crossbowunit mix with handgunners on the battlefield? If so, should both types be Italian, or mixed mercenary nationalities or even regular Burgundians mixed in?

4. I have the command set and three crossbowmen of the old GW's Dogs of War 'Marksmen of Miragliano' lying around. Could these be usable for 1470s Italian mercenaries, or will they stick out like a sore thumb?

Here's some pics on my Gewalthaufen Blog of a game The Bodkins put on at Paritizan. Mainly David Imrie, Dave Andrews and Simon Chicks work:

2. A sort of follow-up on number 1. Would the Burgundian army of the early 1450s have looked similar to that of Charles the Bold? Or would it have still looked more HYW in style?

By the later stages of the HYW, the early 1450's the armours and military styles would have been pretty much the same

3. Could/Would a crossbowunit mix with handgunners on the battlefield? If so, should both types be Italian, or mixed mercenary nationalities or even regular Burgundians mixed in?

This was probably the case so yeah, more crossbowmen than handguners.

4. I have the command set and three crossbowmen of the old GW's Dogs of War 'Marksmen of Miragliano' lying around. Could these be usable for 1470s Italian mercenaries, or will they stick out like a sore thumb?

To be honest I don't really know which one's they are but I think that most of the GW Western style Dogs of War units were more Renaissance based(?)

cheers,
Darrell.

Those looks like an awesome game, Darrell. Armies like that are only a dream for me, as I would throw in the towel much too soon  o_o.

Well, these are the Marksmen of Miragliano.

Their body even looks like one of the Perry's plastic mercenaries, decorated with bits and bobs.
Meanwhile I have found pictures of somebody who mixed them (with Front Rank mini's, I think) in his own Burgundian army.
Looks like they fit :D

Finally I have a use for these figures after +- 15 years  8)

Yeah, the mini's in the foreground are Front Rank. By the looks of things they mix quite well actually.

Usually, as long as the armours are contemporaneous a good paint job will do the trick :)

......and that brings me neatly onto your work- keep up the very good work!  8) 8) 8)

Darrell.
