This time last year I spotted that my local wargames shop had a number of blisters of Artizan Designs March or Die French Foreign Legion that had been around for a while. I made the owner an offer he couldn't refuse and became the proud owner of around 40 Beau Geste style French Foreign Legion (FFL).
This was the genesis of a FFL game based on an adaption of Sharpe Practice rules that I had been planning. Although it has taken me some time to get round to properly starting the project I have been a bit doing the on the side in between other stuff but the time has come to get this on the road. Thus I present to you my first proper colonial game - You Jest or Follow that Camel.
As the title suggests it is loosely based on the Carry on Film characters plus a few of my own. The rules follow the basic Sharpe Practice rules using cards to activate characters and adapted from black powder weapons to a mix of more modern weapons. It also utilises event cards to add a certain "Je ne cest quoi" and friction to the game.
First up are the Characters.
La Legion stalwarts are:
Comdt Burger, Capitan Le Piece, Sgt Knocker and Bo West.

Then their opponents, the Dreaded Amir Bulbul, Mustapha Fagg, Sheik Yabouti and Sheik Ratelenrol

I have painted a few figures as a test. These are one unit of Bedouin:

A few Legionaires in greatcoats:

And some in shirt sleeves:

The rest of the figures will follow on.
At the same time I have been preparing the terrain. I have planned a fort, an Arab town, an oasis, rocky hills and sand dunes. First up is the first of the houses.

Obviously there is a lot more to come and I hope to post the rest as each part is complete.

Very nice start to a very nice project.
I have 4 or so blisters of them to complete myself for our own shenanigans, but planned to use T&T rather than Sharp Practice.
-
Great stuff Gary. :)
The Carry on Films provide an endless list of character names ;)
Looking forward to playing this at next years BLAM :D
-
Aha, one to watch 8)
Love the names ;D
cheers

Very nice. Like other I have a box of these in the cupboard too. I look forward to seeing more.
-
What a great start, Gary, very impressive.
I particularly like those Bedouin.
:-* :-* :-*
Very nice. Like other I have a box of these in the cupboard too.
It seems that having an FFL-themed collection is compulsory for a gamer, as I have one too.
Maybe next year for mine, certainly no rush.
I want to be able to steal all the good ideas that Hu Rhu has too.
:D
Looking forward to playing this at next years BLAM :D

It looks like you are off and running.
Love what you have done so far.
Really look forward to seeing more.

Dear boy,
Carry on your camel was a breakthrough in British cinema.
Highlighting the class system and break up of Colonial Empires .
Brilliantly acted , especially the dashing Hawtrey , it has
become a benchmark in film history. A classic with an international cast.

Excellent stuff!
And linking Sharpe Practice with Carry On films? Genius! Loads of potential there!
-
Guys, thanks for all the encouragement.
The Carry on Films provide an endless list of character names ;)
Yes they do and I intend to make full use of them. For example the end of turn card is: Mustapha Leek :D

Not quite sure Genius is the right word. ??? Now obsessive and quirky get used a lot in conversations about me. ::)
Looking forward to playing this at next years BLAM :D

I will certainly be offering it to the games committee for BLAM 2015. I will leave you guys to lobby the committee. Oh - you are the committee.!! :D :D

Seems only fair. :D :D

Very nice work indeed! And good to see none of that PC nonsense regarding names! lol
Looking forward to see how things progress.

Nice looking project :-* :-* :-*
Any pictures of the dunes, I am looking for ideas to steal.

Any pictures of the dunes, I am looking for ideas to steal.
Thanks Colin, Dunes will be along shortly but not in this update.
Having put the rest of my buildings onto a 3mm MDF base I am waiting to see the results of my basing trial to get the best texture and colour for my table and bases before I finish them off. I have already ordered a number of scenery items to make up the market stalls, and some urban scatter terrain for the Kasbah. Hopefully these will be waiting for me when I get back from the USA next week.
In the meantime I have been working on the event cards. These are designed to be played either by the active player or by his opponent on any unit or character that is activated. The cards backs look like this:
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/EventCardBacks_zps2fec0195.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/EventCardBacks_zps2fec0195.jpg.html)
Some of the events include:
Mirage - A heat haze causes a mirage effect which disorientates the troops.
All movement by this unit is in a random direction. Throw scatter Dice to determine direction of travel.
Heat Stroke - The midday sun causes heat stroke in the unit
One man dies of thirst and all movement is at half speed. Stays in effect until resupplied with water.
March or Die! - The unit is seized upon the need for speed
Movement is increased by 50% for each movement dice.
Midday Prayer - Played on any Bedouin unit. The whole unit stops to pray
Unit loses all its activation for this game turn including those at Mustapha Leek. May defend itself in melee but with 50% of dice.
Water Carrier - A cantinière or camel brings up fresh supplies of water
Cancels the effects of Heat Stroke.
Dust Storm - A dust storm springs up partially hiding the target
All shooting by this unit is reduced to 50% of available dice and Spotting is one band higher
Soft Sand - The unit finds itself marching across sand dunes which slows it down
All movement is reduced by 50%
Pour La Legion - Played upon a Legion unit. The unit is inspired to charge into the enemy
Add 1 dice for every 2 men in the unit in melee
Alluha Akbar - Played upon a Bedouin unit. The unit is inspired by its leader to charge into the enemy
Add 1 dice for every 2 men in the unit in melee
Make Every Shot Count - A unit finds itself short of ammunition
Remove half of all shooting dice
Obstinate Camels - Played on a Bedouin camel unit. The camels are feeling obstinate resulting in slower movement
Movement is at half rate. No charge movement allowed
Ambush - Taking advantage of some dead ground the unit springs an ambush on its opponents
All melee or shooting is increased by 50%
Scouts - Your scouts warn of an enemy ambush ahead. Played as a counter to the Ambush Card
Cancels the effects of Ambush and adds 25% to the units melee
Ammo Resupply - The quartermaster has found the screwdriver to open the ammunition boxes
Unit is resupplied with ammunition
Harem Girl - A harem girl in love with the character has followed him into battle. He has to protect her.
Played on a Character he must throw 9+ on 2D6 to use each activation. Add +1 for every Leadership Character level.
The Harem Girl could be any one of these:
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/HaremGirl_zps4b84e202.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/HaremGirl_zps4b84e202.jpg.html)(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/CorkTip_zpsc180b5d1.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/CorkTip_zpsc180b5d1.jpg.html)
Depending on the scenario it could also be:
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/LadyJanePonsonby_zps4350b105.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/LadyJanePonsonby_zps4350b105.jpg.html)
I have some ideas on how Lady Jane can be introduced to the scenario.
That's all so far. More to follow shortly.

Those cards really give a feel for the genre 8) 8)

I like the sound of these, mate.
A bit of random chaos is good for the soul.

Now that I am back from the States I have been tackling the terrain for this project. I have sorted out the colour scheme for the desert, settling on Sandstone masonry paint with a little added texture created by dropping in some fine sand and ballast to the mix. The boards are ordered but in the meantime I needed to do something with the buildings. Here is my first, a small dwelling. I am quite happy with the colours but I think I need to add a little more to the base in the way of period setting.
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/IMG_5335_zps7bb3bd69.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/IMG_5335_zps7bb3bd69.jpg.html)

The rest of the buildings are coming along and hopefully will be finished this weekend.
-
Looking good, Gary.
Very good.

I would always add a small amount of vegitation to the base, even if the real world says; 'No!'.
I think it adds to look of the model even if there really should not be any.
Aesthetics trumps all, in my opinion.
;)

Agreed, on all points. Lovely looking project.

Thirded on all points :)
Looking forward to seeing this come to the tabletop and getting a game in. :)
-
Fine work on the texture and colors. Pitchers in front are a nice touch.
-
Thanks for the advice chaps. I tend to agree with you, that despite being in the desert, there should be some vegetation around habitation. I shall look into it. As to the awning, I have some other houses with these planned, as well as some market stalls.
Looking forward to seeing this come to the tabletop and getting a game in. :)
I hope to offer it as a game at BLAM next year (or a mini-BLAM if there is one planned between now and then). All welcome.

Funny you should mention mini BLAM. I refer you to the BLAM board ;)
-
Looks good I like the pots and wavy wall shape. Palm tree looks familiar I got some like that very cheaply postage free on ebay from China.
-
Great start to the building collection Gary, as others have said; a few tufts of vegetation around the base of the walls may give it that little extra that you're after.
-
Nice. Improve the palm trees with a shot of some dull cote, though. Even better, a spray or two of a different color green and maybe even a yellowish spray. The the dull cote. Will make a better impression - and photograph better. But mask that nice building first!!!
-
Thanks for all the tips about vegetation and the palm trees. I am working up a few ideas (and awaiting some light coloured tufts) so I should have an improved product in a couple of days. In the meantime I have been painting some camels!!!
-
Very interesting project Gary. Love the Carry On connection. 8)
-
And don't forget major terrain projects when you construct "Fort Zoizante Neuf" to house your Legionnaires, and the "Oasis of El Nooki" for the Bedouins. ;)
"Carry On Up the Khyber" was always a particular favourite of mine, but loved "Follow that Camel" as well.
-
Funny you should mention "Fort Zoizante Neuf". I am drawing up plans for it now. The "Oasis El Nooki" is also on the cards along with some bedouin tents. Despite the silly nature of the film there are some excellent scenarios that can be played out. The march to relieve the fort, the rescue of Lady Ponsonby and the attack on the fort will all feature as sceanrios in the game.
-
Following the excellent suggestions regarding terrain on the building base, I have re-modelled the first house. I have added some tufts, re painted the palm trees and added some shading to the door and window. However not all the adjustments have come out as well on the photo. but here it is.
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5373_zps7c3ed82f.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5373_zps7c3ed82f.jpg.html)
I am now re-painting all my palm trees and adding extra bits to all the remaining buildings. Also first camels and goats arrived today so I have been sorting out where all these fit in. More to follow later.
As the prophet Mustapha Leek said "May your camels always be fertile and your wives biddable"

Looks great now.

Thanks for the encouragement guys.
My next instalment is the Oasis 'El Nooki'. This has a place in two of the game threads. The first is 'March or Die' where the FFL have to get to the oasis to replenish their water stocks or die in the desert. Of course the wily Bedouin under Sheik Yabouti will be trying to prevent them. The second game is the rescue of Lady Jane Ponsonby from the evil clutches of Emir Abulbul. I need to model a few Bedouin tents for this scenario. More to follow on this theme.
Here is the said Oasis

That's all for now. Next up are the hidden movement blinds.
As the prophet Mustapha Fagg said 'May your beard reach the sand and your turban touch the heavens'

Mustapha Fagg lol
Great stuff, it is very effective. :)

Looking good, Gary!
Love the water and the reeds.

The Follow that Camel rules have hidden movement included. Each unit that starts its move hidden from sight is removed from play and two counters are placed instead. One is marked as the real unit and the other a fake. Hidden movement counters look like this:
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5391_zpsa14f3ad5.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5391_zpsa14f3ad5.jpg.html)
However the hidden movement counter looked a little bland so I thought 'what would hide hidden movement in the desert?' and came up with this - a dust cloud.
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5393_zps4c175272.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5393_zps4c175272.jpg.html)
Now when the hidden movement counter is successfully spotted the counter is replaced with whatever is generating the dust. This could be the real unit -
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_4701_zpsb72dc7c7.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_4701_zpsb72dc7c7.jpg.html)
Or a fake unit such as - Camels (or a goat herd)
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5394_zpsf6ece14a.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5394_zpsf6ece14a.jpg.html)
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5395_zpsf6829bc2.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5395_zpsf6829bc2.jpg.html)
Goat herds to follow.
Nice and easy. The dust cloud is simply kapok sprayed in a dark brown and then lightly dusted over in yellow and bone to give it a little depth and then glued onto the hidden movement base. Hope you like it.
As the prophet Mustapha Leek said 'It is easier for a flock of camels to enter heaven that to spot a Bedouin on a roll of 2' :D
-
Interesting :)
cheers
James
-
I like that idea, mate.
Now I guess I will have to make some tumble-weed for hidden movement in the Old West.
8)
-
Nice idea.
-
Might just have to borrow the blinds idea myself. The desert dust clouds from Flames of War might just do the job as a stop gap.
-
Thanks for the encouragement guys. Next up are a few more Bedouin tribesman. These are clearly from a different faction. I may have to make up some rules that cover local animosities when factions combine. This could be fun in a multi player game...and of course at BLAM. :D
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5396_zps8675fa9a.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5396_zps8675fa9a.jpg.html)
The black robes don't seem to have come out well in the photos.
A close up - but not much better. I had better work on my camera skills.
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5397_zps4d0d2c4a.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5397_zps4d0d2c4a.jpg.html)

This is coming on at a good pace.

I think we all know what I mean by that!. :D :D
I have been working on my desert terrain boards. These are twin layers of 9mm MDF with a 25mm Extruded Foam top bonded by Gorilla wood glue and weighted down with a lot of wargames magazines. (I knew that hoarding them over the years would pay off). :)
They started out looking like this.
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/IMG_5415_zps6e4226e1.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/IMG_5415_zps6e4226e1.jpg.html)
Then I mixed up some exterior textured paint in Sandstone, added a little ballast and grit and gave them a good coating. They now look like this.
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5430_zps807353f6.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5430_zps807353f6.jpg.html)
They need a good drybrushing to pick out all the humps, bumps and sand flow but I am happy with the look so far. Next I added some height to some of the boards by adding layers of 25mm foam to create the rocky outcrops that I needed for some of the scenarios. These will have broken up cork added to the front of the cliff faces in an irregular manner to look like eroded sandstone cliffs. I am experimenting with colour tones to get from almost orange sandstone to sandy desert and I am almost there. This is what the boards look like so far.

Finally I have built a test run for sand dunes. They are ok. I might continue to experiment. They are produced separately to allow me to add them as a event card/hazard as part of the game mechanics and also to reposition them on the flatter boards to add some variation.
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5440_zpsfdbab28c.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5440_zpsfdbab28c.jpg.html)

That's all for now. I need to get on with the rest of the boards.
As the prophet Mustapha Leek said "It is all hard work and no play game time for the infidel"

Good stuff Gary :)

Coming along very nicely indeed.
Looking forward to seeing the sandstone tones.

Nice work all round. :)

Lovely. Starting to come together.

Looking great Gary...
I sympathise with getting the colour right. I painted one of my boards four times til I got the colour right...
In the end I went with a base of Steel Legion Drab (light brown mixed in B&Q) then drybrushed heavy with yellow ochre, then dry brushed with titanium cream. I am now happy with result..
I did paint one of my cliffs the same but it looked awful. The black ones drybrushed cream looked so much better

Giles thanks for the tips.
Whilst I was waiting for the glue to dry I decided to start work on Fort Zwazantnerf. Firstly I experimented with a corner tower to get the proportions right and try out the building technique. I hadn't used 10mm blue foam for making buildings before so I wanted to see how it turned out. The result looked like this.
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5427_zps30f63fcc.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5427_zps30f63fcc.jpg.html)
Actually it turned out better than I thought and much quicker to cut out and glue than foamboard. It could also be worked more easily so I could smooth off corners and add nicks to simulate old stone work and general wear and tear.
So I got to work and cut out the rest of the pieces. 3 more towers the main walls and of course the lookout tower.
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5428_zps8a79011c.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5428_zps8a79011c.jpg.html)
Then I got work on the fort. You can see my very simple technique which was to glue each tower piece off set, and pin with cocktail sticks ro ensure rigidity and elastic bands to ensure that it sealed evenly. Here is the main fort placed together with the look out tower in the background.
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5444_zpsf5b20fde.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5444_zpsf5b20fde.jpg.html)
It took most of Sunday to get it all to hang together and the I added the walkways to the main walls from 5mm foamboard with bracing pillars from 4mm square softwood. Here is the wip with the walls simply pinned to the towers and roughly positioned as it will end up.
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5453_zpse5d4e6b0.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5453_zpse5d4e6b0.jpg.html)

Finally I mocked up the main gates which needs distressing a little. I will add some hinges and a restraining bar on the inside.
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5452_zps0961eab7.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5452_zps0961eab7.jpg.html)
Here it is with figure for scale.
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5460_zps179e93ef.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5460_zps179e93ef.jpg.html)
Next I need to work on the buildings inside the fort, add doors to the towers, put in place the stairways to the ramparts and generally tart it up. Finally it will be based on a 2ft square of 4mm MDF. But that is next weekends work.
In the meantime all this sandcastle building makes for thirsty work, so I am off for a beer. :D
-
Fantastique! :D
That's some amount of work there. Looks great though. Are you going to plaster the walls or leave them with the texture of the foam?
-
Are the rules commercial or home-brewed?

Thanks. I am still finalising the details. I am using a textured outdoor paint which gives a good coverage. If I can get away with it I plan to just use the foam texture rather than plaster the walls. I will try this out with an off cut with just the textured paint, stipple it and see what the result is. If it works I can then simply dry brush it white to get the thing looking the way I want it. As I said this is the first time I have built with the foam so it is a bit suck it and see.

Glad to see that you have not lost your marbles and gone down the 'individual brick' route.

Great fun - don't know how I missed it initially. The oasis build is very effective. The second faction of Bedouin look strangely "uniform" - Shariffian, by any chance?
-
That looks great. ;D
It's going to be one of the highlights of BLAM 2015 :D

I never got past the Airfix Foreign Legion fort myself, but that is looking good already Gary :)

Beautiful paintjob all around and great builds as well. I can only wish I was half as productive with my projects as you are with yours.

They are an adaption of Sharpe Practice with extra event cards.

God no. I can't be bothered with all that faff. And I I did I would use pre-formed plasticard. But that doesn't allow any wearing or texture easily.
That looks great. ;D

Hopefully it will be at BLAM 15. You can then judge if it is a highlight or not.
I never got past the Airfix Foreign Legion fort myself, but that is looking good already Gary :)
Actually I did consider the Airfix fort but scale was all wrong especially with the rather chunky Artizan Figures.
The second faction of Bedouin look strangely "uniform" - Shariffian, by any chance?
Not by design! I intend to mix and match the black and white around in the next batch and then mix the two groups to get a variation in colour theme to represent more irregular forces but from the same tribe. Then with two (or more) tribes on the board there will be some cards that the Legion player can use to provoke tension or infighting between tribes. I think that will work quite well at BLAM. One doesn't even need to have cards - the rivalry and faction in fighting seem to come to the fore very easily. lol lol

Give it a go and just paint a small area first.
You may be surprised with just how 'textured' blue foam is naturally.
Make sure you mix a little PVA in with the paint as it helps seal it and stops the foam 'sucking up' the paint to easily.
;)

This is absolutely marvellous. Looking forward to seeing more.
"The Prophet has truly said. The behaviour of the white infidels is like blood coming from a stone. Bleedin' mystery."

Back to work on the rock faces. All the cork is stuck on but whilst it was drying I tried the colours for the sandstone. Here is the final trial.

Thanks for the kind words. I have now completed the terrain boards. Two are flat, two have small hills and two have larger hills. All the hills fit together to form either a ridge, a pass or a large rocky hill. Here are some of the finished boards (not yet put together.
Small hill.

I agree with the comments about the vegetation. A few tufts of dried out look grass would look great around the bottom of the rock faces.

they look fantastic !!

It has taken a long time with all the Christmas and New Years shenanigans but I have finally finished Fort Zwazantnerf. The base board measures 2' x 2' and is textured to match the rest of the terrain.

All that is left now are: the rest of the Tauregs, a few more camels, another 5-6 hidden movement counters, some goat herds, 4-5 more buildings including the Café Zig Zag, some market stalls and of course Lady Jane Ponsonby. ;D ;D
Next update in week or two.... hopefully

I only just found this from your link on a palm trees thread and I'm glad you did. I've read the whole thing in one go and thoroughly enjoyed it; it's had Carry On humour, well crafted scenery and good figure painting, and tips and advice on everything from finishing plastic palm trees to using bluefoam. Excellent work Gary! I don't know how you will get past all that gentlemanly conduct and encourage BLAM players to attack each other though?

It certainly is. lol lol
I pondered whether the rules need any artificial adjustments to produce animosity but then I looked at the members of my own club and thought what the hell.... all wargamers are alike. It just comes out in spades at BLAM. lol lol
As an aside I do have an animosity card which produces a similar result to the BLAM effect for those more squeamish (or honourable) players and almost forces the players to adopt a certain BLAM like attitude even if they hadn't planned it that way!!!!
I think I've taken a fancy to this! Oh-oh..... as they say :D :)

Thanks and yup, just waiting for them to be delivered from Artizan, plus a few kneeling camels as markers, obstacles or general period pieces and scene setters.

Although not my original idea, I created a marker to show shock. Each unit will have a marker like this:
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5576_zps8c26c346.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5576_zps8c26c346.jpg.html)
When a unit receives any shock, the amount is shown by adding a dice into the recess like this:
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5578_zps7f92ce1c.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5578_zps7f92ce1c.jpg.html)
The difference in dice colour allows me show when more than 12 shock points are accumulated, by making the red dice show 2 points of shock for every pip. Thus we can show from 0-24 shock points.
As for additional figures, here's one I painted earlier. I present Bertram Oliphant West or as his friends call him 'Bo' West.
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5426_zps13da350d.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5426_zps13da350d.jpg.html)
The figure is converted from one of Mason's ranges with a French Foreign Legion head transposed and a neck covering modelled from green stuff. It was originally painted for the BLAM painting competition.
Next up are Lady Jane Ponsonby and Cork Tip.

Great stuff!!
I'm thinking of using casualties for my games in the Sudan. I don't know what I'll be using for the NWF (Artizan doesn't do any casualties as of yet) but I may well use something similar to what you've made.
Darrell

As I explained in an earlier post the game includes some non-player characters that build the narrative. First up are two of the ladies:
Cork Tip

Mark Lowther from Unfeasibly Miniatures sent me one of his camel mounted tuareg which I have to say is a fantastic sculpt mounted on an Ebob camel. Here he is painted up. I intend to order a dozen more as soon as Black Hat starts stocking them.

Apparently there will be 4 poses of camel mounted tuareg. I am just waiting for them to appear on Black Hat Miniatures' web store to place an order for another 10.

After a couple of months where work and real life got in the way I have kicked this project back into life.
After a hard month of patrolling what better way for a thirsty legionnaire to spend some off duty time than in the Café Zig Zag.
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMAG0009_zpsgvq8dncq.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMAG0009_zpsgvq8dncq.jpg.html)
The café owner and his staff offer a warm welcome to the brave legionnaires, provide them with all the comforts from home.
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMAG0008_zps4cyrfhjn.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMAG0008_zps4cyrfhjn.jpg.html)
The café owner, Monsieur Citroen, tells everyone that he is from Toulon, but in reality he is from the Levant. An Artizan figure 'Signor Ferrari' with a fez kindly added by Mamalute.
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5659_zpsvemewust.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5659_zpsvemewust.jpg.html)
His head bartender, Emile, has been with M. Citroen for many years and is said to know all his secrets.
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5660_zpsldp6blpi.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5660_zpsldp6blpi.jpg.html)
The Café Zig Zag doubles as a cinema on the rare occasion that a film makes its way across the desert by camel train.
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5661_zpsjz8vyqof.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMG_5661_zpsjz8vyqof.jpg.html)
The legionnaires 'other' requirements are taken care of by Cork Tip and her dancers. She ensures that the legionnaires don't overstay their welcome.

Top work here!!
I like everything, it is so... ...camelicious!!
Might I suggest adding a donkey or two to your taxi stand? &/or a donkey cart?
Both oughta be common enough in your locale.

These images are from all over the Mediterranean, little difference further inland.
I've plans to convert my Bob Murch rickshaw to a donkey cart, it'll see more use.
Keep up the great work, more grand ideas for me to steal!!

I was going to use a earlier Ronald Colman poster but the Gary Cooper version was so much better!! :D

I have had these buildings sitting around for a while so I thought I would finish them off. They are the start of my Kasbah.

I still need to paint up the market stall holders and the shoppers plus a sprinkling of goats and camels but hopefully you get the gist of it.
Thanks for looking.

You may regret asking that.

I will have to send my Beja Hordes to "Liberate" it...

It's a great looking collection. It's all coming together very nicely. ;D

A gentleman never reveals the name of his tailor. :-X
But since I'm no gentleman, I'll tell you. ;)
The very stripey cloth I got it as an offcut at a haberdashery store. The blue and white cloth is from one of my children's old school shirts. :)
Thanks for the comments.
-
OK, not a question about the cloth!! :D
Rather, what did you use a bases for your buildings? MDF or Plasticard?
Or, none of the above?
Darrell.
-
They are supplied by PMC who used to sell only through E-Bay but are now marketed by Caliver Books. They are hardboard/MDF based covered in textured/sanded putty. I added the bases and re-painted them.
By chance I have some for sale. See this thread if you are interested. http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=77242.0

Thanks matey. Is it 2mm MDF?
I ask as I'm going to make my own for my Sudan and NWF projects as they should be easy enough to construct.

Thanks for the vote. ;) I considered entering again but I'm afraid last year's entries took up so much time (and effort too) that I decided against it. Post LPL 8 I didn't have the energy/inclination to paint a single figure for over 3 months.

Those riders really do look great.

Splendid miniatures..
and, still talking about camel mounted troops, any news of the méharistes camel mounted and dismounted infantry?

I will be pleased to see more. :D
Certainly - in due course. :` But I'm off to Greece for a Battlefield tour for the next week :D :D
So no updates until early May. I hope to finish off the rest of the town and then work on some Bedouin tents and a well.
-
I only just discovered this thread. Awesome stuff! I as a terrain-building fan am especially loving the terrain, but the figures are wonderful as well.
Are you still intending to finish the town and the Bedouin tents?
-
Thanks for the encouragement. Yes I am still working on it but the project has slowed down slightly as other events in my life have taken centre stage. I am also waiting a on a new camera. I have a few things completed but not photographed yet. Tents are still on the work desk but I hope to have a prototype ready shortly.
-
I've been eying those Unfeasibly miniatures for a long while. They really do look superb. I also like that many of the foot figures appear to be single piece castings, which always pleases the lazy side.
Great work and thanks for sharing!

I saw some 'in the flesh' both painted and unpainted at Partizan a couple of weeks ago and I can personally vouch for the high quality of the sculpts.

Finishing off my desert village is the Mosque. A known hotbed of subversion and intrigue, it is off limits to the brave legion.

Thank you. I am looking forward to putting it on, although the transportation is starting to worry me slightly. :? :?

Thanks for the encouragement.
Next up are my casualty markers. In addition to losing figures each unit can also get shock, which represents the slow undermining of morale as the situation gets ever more dangerous. I have decided to use shock markers made up of a wounded or dead figure to which dice are added to show the amount of shock being carried by the unit.
Here are some basic markers.
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/018_zpstopwijbi.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/018_zpstopwijbi.jpg.html)
And now with Legion Casualties.
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/014_zpsyswhq0yz.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/014_zpsyswhq0yz.jpg.html)
And finally with the shock dice.
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/016_zpstgercpyw.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/016_zpstgercpyw.jpg.html)
I see I still need to work on my camera skills but you get the idea. I am waiting for my Arab casualty figures to arrive and then I will finish these off. Next up the rest of my hidden movement counters.
-
Coming along nicely Gary 8)
Doesn't matter if you've slowed down a bit, the whole project doesn't look that far off completion :)
I do like the printed paper tiles on the side of the mosque, it works a treat :D
cheers

Nearly there Gary and it's looking great! :-*
Transportation: yeah, getting everything into the car and not breaking it can be a test worthy of Mensa! Repacking at the end of the day, even more so lol

I do like the printed paper tiles on the side of the mosque, it works a treat :D
And there's me hoping that you would think that they were hand painted. :D
Actually I stole borrowed the idea from Dr Matthias and others.

and if you can find some tan dice...

This is a fantastic and inspirational thread and after suffering 20 years of political correctness in the public sector a marvellous hoot to boot!

I have a few more pieces painted along with some more troops and Bedouin casualty markers but not enough time to photograph them before I head off on holiday.
I do have some more hidden movement markers, this time goat herds. Here they are:
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/023_zps1obxcomo.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/023_zps1obxcomo.jpg.html)
As the wise man Mustapha Leek says 'May your wells always be free of camel dung'.

It's been a while since I last visited and followed that Camel. Glad I did it this time, great additions! The blues of the beduin camel riders look splendid and the casualty and hidden movement markers are superb as well. So all in all, you have earned your holiday :)

Love the mobile kebabs, mate.
They blend in so well with the rest of the project.

Here is my latest work - Bedouin casualty markers. The figures are from Foundry and although not Legion specific they do the job well enough.

Excellent stuff Gary, not long to go now. ;D
-
Lovely.
The basing is rather good and you are certainly becoming a bit of a master with that blue shading.
:-* :-* :-*
.....not long to go now. ;D
Dont start that lark again.
>:D
-
What a gorgeous build-up! :-*
I always marvel at the tenaciousness some of you Brits display when sticking to a project like that for such a long period.
-
Great stuff Gary :)
Are you going to have a wadi and call it El Daya Wan...
cheers
James

Nice! :-*
Darrell.
-
Your work is amazing. The terrain pieces are great and the painted arabs are awesome (really like the blue clothes)
-
They look great. I agree with the praise for your basing and mastery of the colour blue! Sorry if I missed it in a previous post, but what rules are you using?
-
Very nice indeed! :-*

Thanks Paul, but you haven't seen them close up yet :D

Thanks for the compliment. As to the longevity that is simply a lack of time to get things done in a hurry and sheer bloodymindedness to finish the project. Oh yes and having promised to run the game at BLAM this year. lol
Great stuff Gary :)
Are you going to have a wadi and call it El Daya Wan...
cheers
James
lol
Cheers. Not a Wadi but I do have a desert well to add into the mix and need a good 'Carry On name'. Any suggestions? ;) ;)

Thanks very much.

Thanks very much. I am using a very heavily converted set of Sharp Practice suitably loony enough to cover Beau Geste crossed with Carry On Follow That Camel. Have a look at pages one and two for some ideas of how it works and the characters involved.
Very nice indeed! :-*
Cheers. More pics of the whole Bedouin Force to follow later today.

Thanks Darrell
Don't thank me- you did the lovely painting :) :D
Darrell.

Now just the remaining Legion (40 figures) to paint, a few extra pieces of terrain to finish off (Tents, a Well, a few rocky outcrops) and then an overall smartening up of the existing pieces and the last of the hidden movement markers (2 camels and some dust clouds). With under 6 weeks to go this is going to be tight. :-X

Best of luck with cracking on in the time Gary - it's a lovely looking set-up. 8)

I was thinking more schoolboy lavatory humour given we already have the Oasis El Nooki and Fort Zwazantneuf. :D :D

Thanks - I hope it will look good given who it up against on Friday of BLAM. :( :(

Wow!
Absolutely outstanding terrain board, terrain pieces and minis! :-*
I think folks will find the hidden movement a really fun addition to the game.
Well done!

Best Foreign Legion Adventure stuff I`ve seen in a long time.
I presented a participation game at Tactica a couple of years ago and it was not that good looking !
Cheers

Thanks - I hope they do. And just to make sure they appreciate the fakes, anyone who rounds up some stray camels etc gets bonus points. They just have to watch out for the Obstinate Camels event card. lol lol

Thanks Bjorn. Given your standard of work that is a very kind compliment. :)

That is a LOT of Arabs.
Great work Gary.

Sweet paintjob 8)
The blue comes out superbly on that army.
Greetings :)

These are two work in progress terrain pieces. First up is Sheik Yabouti's tent which can be found near the Oasis El Nooki.

Both need a paint job and some additional items strewn around the base to give it the right flavour. The figure is just for perspective.

The tent and well are nice additions; the names are.....spot on for the BLAM clientele!

Lovely builds, mate.

You are doing really well with progress.
Carry On......

Carry On......
Nothing like having a deadline to increase production. These to finish, a few more palm trees, a legion camp and about 16 figures to paint - oh and three more terrain boards. :o :o :o
-
Hi Gary, this year will be my first BLAM and I am really looking forward to seeing this game and hopefully having a go at yomping through the desert lol.
I've come late to this thread but have to say it's inspirational stuff, keep up the good work, I'm sure it will all be worth it.

Jeff,
I am sure you will enjoy BLAM - such great games and some great people to play them with.
Thanks for the encouragement.

Top stuff Gary, it's going to be an impressive game, I am looking forward to participating if the opportunity arises. ;D

You need to put a gee-gee on the base of that well somehow.... ;)

I am just assembling the whole Legion force for photographing and hope to post this over the next couple of days along with the NPC fugures.
I will then have just a couple of terrain pieces to polish up and 6 more figures to paint. Then a tidy up of the Character and Event Cards and printing off the Scenario Briefs and Quick Rules. With a bit of luck and a fair wind this should take no more than a week.
-
All sounds positive with three weeks remaining ;D

Brilliant, mate.

The well looks spot on, even if it is a nag short... ;)

Thanks. I thought the tent needed a little colour to off set all the browns. It looks a little better in real life than my poor camera skills show it. :?
Oh and there is no horse at the well just a small crib with the words 'Rosebud' on it.
-
All looking sa-weet! :-*

Here are the completed Legionnaires. First up a patrol marching towards Dayshalno Pass.
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMAG0154_zpsd0cwpl42.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMAG0154_zpsd0cwpl42.jpg.html)

That completes all the main figures with just a few characters to finish off with.
Now all together - La Madelon pour nous n’est pas sevère, Quand on lui prend la taille ou le menton, Elle rit c’est tout l’mal qu’elle sait faire, Madelon, Madelon, Madelon.

Very impressive!

Very impressive!
Indeed!!
:o
They have come out a treat, Gary.
It must really feel like all that effort was worth it when you see them all parading about like that.
:-* :-* :-*
-
Brilliant. ;D Cant wait to see them. :D
-
My goodness Gary, that is quite a collection you've built there :o
-
Nice, quite nice indeed - though I did find myself asking, "Where is the mule company?" Maybe not made in your scale. Your rules of choice for the period, if I may ask - or you can task me to read the whole thread if already mentioned somewhere.

Highly impressive and well loved collection mate :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

Thanks to all for the encouragement. :) :) Last few figures are on the painting table, part finished. The terrain is all completed now. Latest edition is the legionnaires encampment and some scatter terrain (rocks and palm groves)
Here is the encampment.

Thanks. The mule company is an aspiration will be added at a later date but not in time for the game in Oct. As to the rules, they are my adaption of Sharpe Practice with additional event cards. You can find the ideas, characters and sample cards on Page 1. As for reading the whole thread, I leave that up to you. 8) If you do then hopefully you will be rewarded. :)

Thanks Darrell.
Burning the candle both ends this weekend I painted the last figures for the game at BLAM. First up are the Fanatical Eunuchs. (Who wouldn't be fanatical if someone had whipped your goolies off) ::).
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMAG0172_zpst5ar6k9o.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMAG0172_zpst5ar6k9o.jpg.html)
Then another leader mounted (of course) on a camel. I present Mustapha Phagg.
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMAG0178_BURST002_zpscicirzav.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMAG0178_BURST002_zpscicirzav.jpg.html)
He has a dismounted version - Mustapha Restt.
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMAG0174_zpsevnc1ru0.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMAG0174_zpsevnc1ru0.jpg.html)
Hurrah. :D :D :D
I also finished up the remaining hidden movement markers and a few camels to act as decoys. That leaves just two jobs left. The first is easy - Print the Character and Event Cards and laminate the Players Briefings and Quick Reference Sheets. 8)
The second is also easy - build the Fort facade. However disaster struck like an unwanted iseberg in the desert. My local hobby shop has run out of 10mm foam. Hopefully they will be getting some in soon otherwise it will be very last minute dot com to produce the objective. >:( >:(
I certainly don't want to emulate the Brothers Mac by painting the terrain and adding palm trees just before the game starts. lol lol
-
Brilliant, mate.
8) 8)
Fanatical eunuchs, eh...?
Ouch!
:'(
(It also looks like you are going to beat me to the finish as well as I STILL have a building and a railroad car to build..... ::)).
-
Well done Gary 8)
-
Great project!! :o :-* :-*
LB
-
Lovely work :-* :-* :-*
Looking forward to playing this in two weeks or so :D
and I don't remember the painting of terrain of adding palm trees at the last minute you must have us confused with someone else (DEAN)

Proper BLAM that 8) 8) 8)
cheers

Looks great Gary....you have inspired me to crack on with mine...how many days left???
I assume you have a base cloth/board you are going to place on the tables I have lovingly painted blue for you..?

No problem Giles I have a few of these but tarted up with a bit of vegetation since I took that shot back in December.

Which reminds me to post some pictures of the whole board and the figures, cards etc. A job for the weekend once I have finished off the Fort façade. The good news on that front is I now have the foamboard I needed. Walls cut out and towers glued together.
Should be complete by the weekend, which leaves me 11 days spare before BLAM.

Really looking forward to seeing the terrain project- any chance of a Step by Step? I ask as I'm about to make some desert terrain of my own.....

Darrell,
See pages 4 and 6 of this thread to see how I made the boards.

Yes and proud of it. 8) 8)
I have taken a few shots of my Fort façade along with some of the detail of the terrain boards as they look now. Firstly here is the fort façade as a WIP showing where it will fit onto the table.
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMAG0179_BURST009_zpsntt9txgn.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMAG0179_BURST009_zpsntt9txgn.jpg.html)
And here is the finished article, complete with dead legionnaires placed on the battlements to fool the Bedouin.
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMAG0212_BURST002_zpsygqdl7tk.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMAG0212_BURST002_zpsygqdl7tk.jpg.html)
And here is a shot of how the main fort would look on the table. As you can see it would completely dominate the table, hence the need for the facade.

Lovely inspiring work, that's for sure :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
I'm going to have to order some of that 5mm foam!! I've been saying it for years and never got around to doing it!! o_o o_o

WOW! That's fantastic! :-*
I'd love to play across that!

That's a lovely set up Gary 8)

Don't worry, I had planned to bring the main fort along just for show, although it can't feature in the main game. But it would be nice to get some decent photographs of it. My phone camera just dosn't cut it.

Oh I intend to. I am sure he will be amenable if I ask nicely... or buy him a beer. 8) 8)
As you will know the game is card driven activation, whereby the card activates a character (player) who in turn chooses what actions he and his men will do. A selection of the Character Cards are here:
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMAG0223_zpsq8ycjui6.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMAG0223_zpsq8ycjui6.jpg.html)
The card backs feature 'Coops' in his drama personae 'Beau Geste' whilst the characters are drawn from Carry on Follow that Camel and other well 'desert' films.
Then there are the event cards. Each player initially draws a number of cards to his hand and can play them on any activated unit (one per player). The hand is renewed either by dice throw at the end of each game turn or a player can spend an activation to draw an additional card. There are two packs on for the Legion players and another for the Bedouin. The Legion pack looks like this with some of the event card titles showing.
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMAG0228_zpsr8e5pjil.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMAG0228_zpsr8e5pjil.jpg.html)
The Bedouin pack looks like this:
(http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/garybourne/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMAG0238_zpsopgtageq.jpg) (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/garybourne/media/Follow%20That%20Camel/IMAG0238_zpsopgtageq.jpg.html)
As you can see the cards are a fun way of throwing a spanner into the exquisitely crafted plans of an opponent. Hopefully they will add to the fun (and general mayhem) of the game without being a show stopper in themselves.
-
Nice one with the cards, mate.
Those random events should throw the game into a more chaotic state.
Which is nice.

And we certainly got it!
Bloody brilliant game with a lot of good laughs on the way.
Even when your 'elite' cavalry are out-performed by a bunch of restaurateurs..... ::)
Thoroughly enjoyed it and a treat to the eyes at the same time.
:-* :-*
Great game.
Cheers, mate!

This was a real triumph; great table set up, fast and fun rules and the card system worked a treat.

I got to be Sgt Knocker, the Phil Silvers character from the Carry On film. The same thing happened in the game as happened in the film!
Muuuustafaaa Leeeeek!

A real labour of love. I look forward to AAR photos.

Well I followed the camel at BLAM and it was a lot of fun. :D. As one of the Sheiks I made a token attack, watched my fellow sheiks commit their men, then went after each of their Harem girls. ;)
-
This was my first game at BLAM15 and it was brilliant, I was Sheik rattleanroll and I had a master plan that was thwarted when the dust cloud turned out not to be the Maxim I was hoping for but a pair of flipping camels :(
Apparently my face was a picture, but I won't print here what I said lol :-X
-
Thanks to all those who took part and 'Followed the Camel' at BLAM 2015. I had a great time putting on the game, made even more enjoyable by the positive comments that were made. The highlights for me was the reaction of the players when they finally figured out the names of the terrain features such as Horsonne Wells (I'm not sure if Mason had finally figured that one out) and fighting in Dayshalno Pass. :D :D
However the fit of giggles erupting from the Bedouin side when they played the Sandcastle Building Competition card (see the movie) on the Legionnaires causing them to miss a turn at a crucial moment was the most satisfying of all. lol
The games were very closely fought but the Legionnaires just came out on top in both games having relieved the fort with only turn or two in hand in both games.
Sadly I was too busy to take photos of the games so I shall ask those who did to send me some or post them here so that I can have a record of the project finally being finished. :) :)
-
....I'm not sure if Mason had finally figured that one out....
Finally???
Bleedin' cheek!
I still think it needs a dead horse on the base.
Even if you only want to flog it!
;D ;D ;D

Unfortunately for me I missed the opportunity to play on the day. But from what I saw everyone seemed to be having a great time. :)
The table looked brilliant, I am in awe of you Gary for how you have put this whole project together in just a year. ;D

Well the project has finally come to an end. The two games I ran at BLAM were well supported and everyone seemed to have a good time, judging by the comments above.
Here are some photos taken during the games.

Great looking game! It's nice to hear it all turned out well after all your preparation--the whole process has been inspiring to watch.
-
Really beautiful looking game mate and definitely worth all the effort that we've seen you put into it on=ver the past year or so.
If you don't mind me asking, how long did it take to get it all together?
:-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
It took a complete year to put the whole thing together starting in early October 2014, although I had painted 15 figures for the LPL in Apr/May of that year.

Ahh memories, those camel mounted troops did a lot of damage until they came up against the staff in a local cafe who gave them a bloody nose lol.

Some lovely photos courtesy of Dr De'Ath. ;D
Have you bought the F&IW stuff yet ;)

It took a complete year to put the whole thing together starting in early October 2014, although I had painted 15 figures for the LPL in Apr/May of that year.
Board, terrain pieces and miniatures (especially the arab miniatures which I absolutely adore); done in one year....
...that is absolutely awesome!
Really enjoyed the thread and certainly would have loved to have had the pleasure to play.

And a worthy achievement 8)
I know one really has to be there but the game looked to be one of the best I've seen in the pics :)
Darrell.
it was....and sadly I was running another so could not play :(
Thanks very much for the vote of confidence.
I missed out on the chance to play too, but I got some pictures:

As a matter of fact I have. I will be posting shortly on the Pikes, Muskets and Flouncy Shirts board with a thread entitled 'Drums along the Mohawk' which is one of my favourite films from the era.

Good man ;D
Great film by the way, it was on Flim4 not that long ago. I have fond memories of watching it many years ago and remember the scene vividly where the Indians set fire to Henry Fonda's farm and corn fields and the settlers fleeing to the fort. I can see a game here... ;)
-
That does sound most interesting.
:D

I got to play this game. I had sgt Knocker who's mission was to capture the daughter of one of the Arabs who knew the location of a big shiny diamond. I also had to keep the sgt alive as a secondary mission. Oh and there was something about lifting a siege on a fort but that was a bit far away on the other side of the table

My main objective

As far as I got after fighting off a whole lot of Calvary

There was something in my orders about lifting a siege here

Someone else managed it
