Howdy Pardners!
This project log has been a long time in the making/planning, and my painting speed can sometimes slow so much that I wondered if I should even do it at all. But recently I've been so consumed by this project or at least by the *idea* of this project, that I decided it was time to put up or shut up. And so, without further ado, I present to you, Psyber's Warhammer Quest/ Dungeon Painting Log!
A few things to get out of the way, for those who're interested:
1. My guiding principle behind this project is that I will only paint models that I like, and will paint nothing out of necessity. Bold words, but the whole point of this project is to help sustain my enthusiasm for painting and modelling. Therefore, I'll be selecting models from outside the core box, and even outside the Citadel range, in order to put together my "ultimate" set. Parcels of classic models are arriving on an almost daily basis, and many of my old (20-year-plus) models are bathing in stripper as I type!
2. I used to be pretty seriously into the game as a lad, and hope to be again, so the first step is to collect and paint every monster from the levels 1-3 monster tables! Some of these will require proxies. Some, I simply don't like and never have, so I'll be swapping those out for models that I *do* like (see rule 1). But more or less, it'll be complete.
3. I hate dungeon models on square bases, and even more so on green bases. To help unify the collection, I've chosen to base all my models on Fenris Games Temple Ruin and Cthulhu Temple round chamfer bases.
That's the rules done. Time for the first pic:
I painted the four heroes from the box, along with a few extras from Warrior Packs and homebrew rules, over 10 years ago. Actually, they stood up pretty well, so my first job was to rebase them and do some touch ups to bring them in line with my present painting standard.
Same applied to these guys: the Witch Hunter, and a Talisman model I use as a Bounty Hunter custom Warrior (you can find the rules here http://bwarhammerquestcustomized.runboard.com/ (http://bwarhammerquestcustomized.runboard.com/)).
Wot, no Elf? 'Fraid not. I never liked the Warhammer Quest Elf. I had a Talisman one that I used to use, but he didn't really stand up to the others. So, the first brand-new-from-scratch model I painted for the project was this Elf from Statuesque Models.
I plan to replace the three original heroes in the near future, as only the Barbarian really stands the test of time for me. I'll also be adding a Trollslayer and Warrior Priest for starters, and maybe the Imperial Noble later.
However, in the next update I'll be looking at monsters!
-
A Warhammer Quest tread? Eeexccellleeeent! :-*
Great painting on those heroes, I'm looking forward to what you'll do next!
-
Oooh I'll be following this. My own WQ project got bogged down after I didn't implement Rule 1 and started painting the orcs from the box... I haven't even got round to painting the heroes I sculpted yet. :(
Top painting all round and your old figures look great on their new bases. I'm really pleased to have provided an alternative elf - I'm not a fan of the original either. :D
-
Cheers! Problem with the old Elf was that he didn't actually look like an Elf lol
I'll be using your Barbarian for sure. But tonight I'll be photographing the first batch of baddies ready to post tomorrow.
-
Good stuff: crisp, strongly contrasted, colourful, well-modulated.
The one-piece plastics from the boxed set were always favourites of mine, as was the witch hunter.
I never noticed before that Statuesque's elf appears to be Jeremy Paxman in a blond wig.
-
Yes. Yessss. YESSSSSS. Continue.
-
TOP WORK!
Your minis really are pieces of art.
Good memories with those classic minis.
Waiting for more.
Thanks for sharing.
-
Amazing work! :o
Some of these miniatures are laying in my shelf orribly painted: i wish one day to have stuff painted like yours. Keep on sharing!
-
Lovely work!
-
So, the first baddies I painted weren't from the box set at all, but instead scratched my itch to paint some Undead:
Now, the eagle-eyed among you may recognise a few of the models so far from an article in Wargames Soldiers & Strategy a few months back. Yes, my project stalled almost before it had begun, but have no fear, I now have my mojo back, hence I'm using the project log to provide further motivation.
To prove it, I added to my growing Undead horde (well, small gang, maybe) with more Skeletons. The thing I love about Quest is that you never need to paint more than 12 models of the same type - and in this case, it's only 6 of each type of Skeleton (bows and swords). This helps keep the motivation and interest high, and encourages you to do a good job on each model, rather than bash them out, army style. I also painted a classic Warhammer Quest Necromancer to lead them (taken from the brilliant Catacombs of Terror set):
Have to confess, the new Vampire Counts plastic skellies from GW are great, if a little on the small and finicky side. But they're a real pleasure to paint compared to the old archers.
Mr. Larenscheld, it's time for your close-up:
That's all for now. I'm putting the finishing touches on some Zombies, and I'll be back. Thanks for looking!
-
Excellent paintwork all round. I'll watch this project with interest. :D
I never really got into Warhammer quest but played heroquest and advanced heroquest for quite a while.
I'm quite taken with the new GW skeletons. Might have to get a box myself...
-
Wasn't hugely happy with the photo quality on the second batch of Skeletons, so I've taken a couple of single shots of my favourite one. Meet Skeleton Bob.
(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/447/18676081363_c7550ccc7c_z.jpg) (https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/278/18674162244_07c9e7f141_z.jpg)
-
Stunning.
:-*
-
While I'm totally unfamiliar with the various Quest games, your creations are GORGEOUS & would look WONDERFUL with any Fantasy game. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Constantly impressed and amazed at the quality and quantity of your output (well certainly compared to me).
Great stuff :)
-
Bob looks good. :)
-
Great looking skellies :-*
-
(stamps and claps my hands) MORE...MORE...MORE...MORE...
-
Looking great!!
-
Love Quest - looking to get my own up and running soon.
-
Last update for the week - I can't promise I'll be updating the log this regularly all the time, but for now I'm being fairly prolific. I'm sure normal, Cretaceous service will resume soon lol
Continuing the little Undead theme, here are some Zombies:
Had a lot of fun posing and painting these chaps. The guy with his guts falling out was an experiment with the Citadel 'technical' paint, 'Blood for the Blood God', which comes out really glossy and icky. A lot like Tamiya Clear Red I think.
In terms of gameplay, I only need six for levels 1-2, but eventually I'll have to paint another 3 to 6. Everything I'm doing now though is to get me through those first few gaming sessions with fully painted models for everything.
I'm going to do a little more Undead, then I'll probably treat myself to a Warrior before moving onto the Orcs and Goblins.
Have a great weekend :)
-
Just awesome. I've been meaning to do some Warhammer Quest (actually going to print some cards for room cards using the D&D tiles I think). Love seeing the way you're doing this project.
-
Cracking job on the skellies (and everything really) can't wait to see what comes next!
-
New update, and it's the end of the Undead drive for the time being.
Are you my mummy?
I'll need two more mummies eventually if I want to progress past level 5, so I've already prepped and undercoated two old Heroquest mummies as nostalgic fill-ins! But I'll get round to those later - I've got some serious painting to do if I ever want to finish the level 1 monster table...
-
Nice Dr Who reference, have a jelly baby!
Love the mummies, the skin is nice and old, but preserved in that special way.
-
Wow, stunning efforts! I am very impressed (and a little jealous considering that I never managed to paint any of my WHQ!), so I'll be following this closely.
Have to confess, the new Vampire Counts plastic skellies from GW are great, if a little on the small and finicky side. But they're a real pleasure to paint compared to the old archers.
I actually really like the kit. They are very obviously "fantasy", but are still reasonably generic; you only know they are GW models because of the lack of anyone else making decent plastic skellies.
-
Beautiful painting!
-
Your Deadites are FANTASTIC...TERRIFIC brushwork & an eye for colors. The Zombies have a certain appeal for moi. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Thanks for the words of support guys - it's motivating me to paint more, faster, better lol
This week's update: I promised I'd leave the Undead for a while and get on with the creatures from the box set, so here are the first six Orcs! I went for a more modern/imposing model than the ones from the WHQ box, but had a lot of fun with these.
Almost done with the six Orc Archers/ Arrer Boyz too.
Stay tuned!
Edit: now with close-up!

-
man, that's some serious bandage painting, there ...
-
Nice. :)
Those orcs are so much more imposing than the originals.
-
Yep. Just awesome. Preez continue.
-
What's that you say? Two updates in a week? I wouldn't get used to that if I were you lol
Here are the aforementioned Arrer Boyz!
Have a great weekend all!
Edit: Another close-up.

-
The Sharpshooting Lads in Green look FANTASTIC. You do have a fine eye for colors, AND a deft hand with the brush. As always, VERY WELL DONE!
-
This week's update (still making progress).
Decided to treat myself by painting a new Warrior before getting back to the dungeon denizens. This time it's the ever-popular Trollslayer. I admit this is one of my favourites, and I'm really pleased with the way the model turned out. Probably the best face I've painted in a very long time. Hope y'all like!
Right, now back to the monsters!
Edit: Forgot to show off the stripey trousers!
-
Awesome paintjob on one of my ever favourite mini. And yes, the face had tourned out beautifully. Great job!
-
Gorgeous! :-*
-
Your OUTSTANDING brushwork & eye for colors has brought to life a SPLENDID miniature, AND given the Little Psycho a WONDERFULLY expressive face. VERY WELL DONE indeed!
-
The gems and the face are outstanding!
Cool!
Cheers
GS
-
Wow, that's stellar. :-*
-
Very, very nice. A great bit of paintwork. :D
-
Shucks, thanks guys. Probably the model I've enjoyed painting most. I'm now rooting around in the lead pile for some trolls for him to slay!
-
Intense and beautifully executed. This is one of the threads which made me pick up a brush for the first time in 9 months a week or two ago. Thanks for the inspiration.
-
Though I'm not convinced that the new plastic fantasy Orcs are any better then the ones that came with game originally (I actually dislike both designs for different reasons!), I do love you paintwork on them - most excellent indeed!
Seeing your Trollslayer (another lovely paintjob!) has me wondering... Are you likely to do several versions of each character in order to show the "progression" of a hero as they level up? Maybe three versions; starting adventurer (levels 1-6), experienced adventurer (levels 7-14), heroic adventurer (levels 15-20)? Could be a nice excuse to paint up a few different versions of the heroes too...!
-
Cracking trollslayer that! I'd wager it came out so well because you loved doing it so much. Wouldn't want to get on his more-bad side, that's for sure.
-
@Major Gilbear I wasn't planning on doing multiple characters for progression purposes, but I do plan on doing multiple versions of the same class so that people can choose their favourite model when they come round for a game (so I'd have two very different Barbarians, for example, and possibly a male and female version).
On the Orcs, I think the larger plastics are far better than the original boxed game ones, certainly in terms of expression, detail and menace! However, they aren't my favourite models - the old metal Big Uns are probably the most characterful IMHO, but really hard to get hold of. I have two and couldn't even find them on ebay, let alone buy another 10!
PS. I've added a few close-up shots to some of my earlier posts, for those interested.
-
@Elbows: That sounds like I'm responsible for something. Oh god, I can't take the pressure! lol
(seriously though, you're too kind).
-

Great idea!

I do like the Brian Nelson style of Orcs... I just don't like what GW did with the rest of the anatomy (like going from hunchbacked Orcs to having ones with heads in the middle of their chests).
I know what you mean about the Big 'Uns though. That they were not really released in quantity doesn't help in getting them second-hand now either.
PS. I've added a few close-up shots to some of my earlier posts, for those interested.
Yep, your paintjobs are absolutely super! :-*
-
Howdy!
bit of a slow week last week due to holidays. I did manage to rummage about in the attic, however, and dig out some more models. I've started to cannibalize my old Orcs and Goblins Warhammer army now, and so I found a half-painted Troll, rebased him and repainted him for the Quest project. I'll consider this one a test piece - need to get two more painted eventually, but for now one is enough.
-
Lovely, lovely, lovely (as everything else you have posted!).
That's pretty much the skin tone I want to achieve with my trolls, once I get to paint them. Grey with a slight moss green tint.
Can you please share the paint recipe you've used with this nice fellow?
-
That is an OUTSTANDING creation...BEAUTIFUL array of colors & some WONDERFUL work with the brush. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Awesome...though the Dwarf doesn't look like he's too excited.
-
Great job on all of them...but I love the skeletons!
-

Sure! I used some old paints on this guy though. The skin was 50/50 Knarloc Green and Adeptus Battle Grey (both Foundation paints - not sure what the new equivalents are). I washed the model with green and black mixed washes (I use Army Painter Green Tone and Secret Weapon black, but there are several on the market). Then I just gradually added Fortress Grey to the base colour for the highlights.
Edit: for paint compatibility, check out this chart: http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Paint_Range_Compatibility_Chart

Thanks, will keep the recipe (and the link) in mind when I get down to mine. :)

Great thread. Terrific.
-
Stop. Hammer time!
Ahem.
This week's update is another hero - this time the Warrior Priest. Again, I didn't use the Warhammer Quest figure with the gigantic barrel-shaped hammer, but instead picked up my favourite mini from the metal WP sets that GW released a few years back. I'm not too fussed about him having exactly the right starting equipment (two hammers instead of one, scrolls instead of book), especially as heroes tend to buy and find new equipment all the time during the game.
I really need to stop getting distracted now and paint those monsters, or this project will never get done!
-
Gorgeous model again!
I liked that series of priests actually (they looked suitably grim and determined) - I think they did something like three sculpts with slightly different weapons loadouts.
-
Yep. I actually had all three. The one with hammer, shield and book was probably slightly better, but he suffers from 'one leg up standing on huge rock' syndrome, which was just too much work for the dungeon setting :)
-
Just wanted to plug this website for any fans of Warhammer Quest: http://bwarhammerquestcustomized.runboard.com/
Run by a guy called 'Littlemonk', this is is one of the most complete collections of warriors, cards, dungeon tiles and adventures on the net, and it all looks very professional. As he plays regularly, he's also revised some of the original warrior packs to make them play better, and he's done a sterling job.
-
Yep, I've scanned that before - it has quite a following. I like the way you did your priest up. Looks like he's ready for a fight.
-
Incredibly, I've managed to keep pace with this project log, ready for another Monday update. I give to you the first of my Minotaurs:
For anyone unfamiliar with Warhammer Quest, the Minotaur is the 'big bad' of the basic game. It's possible to face D3 Minotaurs in your first game, which is almost impossible to defeat. If you get one of the buggers, you're going to have a a hard time :)
The choice of model here isn't everyone's favourite - it's not even my favourite, but good Minotaurs are hard to find. I searched and searched and basically came to the conclusion that these goofy ones from the 90s, if painted well, are about as good as it gets. For anyone wondering: Scibor does three great minotaurs, but a bit too expensive for my blood. Avatars of War do my favourite minotaur, but only have two poses and they didn't look easy to convert. The new GW plastics are, to my eyes, ugly as sin (what's going on with those weird feet?). The original Warhammer Quest ones, although a marvel when they were made, now look very dated and not very threatening compared to my hard-bitten warriors. No-one wants a cuddly Minotaur!
The advantage of using these particular models is that the Minotaur Lord, which came out at the same time, is a genuinely nice figure, and will fit in with his Minotaur minions nicely. I just secured one off eBay, so eventually I'll be painting him along two more basic Minotaurs to match the one above.
-
Lovely. I want to redo my current minotaur (doesn't look beastly enough). Lovely work on that fella (I particularly like his choice of weapon).
-
Lovely minotaur!
I agree that the snouts look a bit cartoony, but that era of Citadel metal minotaurs is probably my favourite actually.
That said, I've seen a few conversions over the years that mix and match different bodies and heads to great (superior) effect.
Anyway, well done. 8)
-
Lovely. :D
Great work on that Minotaur.
-
Well done on that Minotaur! Like your painting style.
-
Wonderful painting. I recall coming against a couple of Minotaurs during my first or second WHQ game: things did not end well!
-
I recall coming against a couple of Minotaurs during my first or second WHQ game: things did not end well!
Yep! The Minotaur is the primary reason that most parties don't make it past Level 1. Thankfully, if you do get past that early barrier, things get a little more balanced, at least for a time. The difficulty curve goes 'Insane-->normal-->easy-->Insane'. Yet for all that, it's still brilliant!
-

Hear, hear.
I still remember that game of Warhammer Quest. It was a no-master, randomized game. First room, draw a encounter card... 1D3 minotaurs. Roll the dice... 3 minotaurs.
Let's just say that five minutes later we were starting a new game. lol
Oh, and very nice painting on your minotaur!
-
Right, I've been putting off painting the bog standard monsters for this game, as even in these small quantities I have to find models that I really like, otherwise I can't bring myself to batch paint. I've sort of figured out a solution.
Enter the Night Goblins:
These guys are so much more characterful than the ones in the WHQ box, and are probably the best Goblins GW sells. They might be my favourite Goblins ever. They're the one-part Gobbos from the Skull Pass starter set, which I never got round to painting. Very crisp detail, and I like that they're small too, rather than the over-sized ones that GW used to make.
My solution to painting fatigue is to do them in batches of six rather than all 12 at once. I've already started the six archers, and I've been breaking up the 'assembly line' by doing a few test schemes for future models. So there'll be more Gobbos next week :-)
Rather enjoying painting these guys. Interestingly the Goblins in the original box were the common variety, but I've gone for Night Goblins all the way, because (a) they're much better models, I mean, so far superior that there's no contest, and (b) Night Goblins live in caves and dungeons, so it makes sense to me.
More to follow.
-
Nice! I concur, some of the best GW goblins. For my dungeon crawl I very much do the "paint a big batch of baddies...then a hero/monster" routine. :D
-
For my dungeon crawl I very much do the "paint a big batch of baddies...then a hero/monster" routine. :D
Totally agree, it keeps at bay the madness (mostly). At least I'll never need to paint more than 12 of the same type - that's the mantra that keeps me going. Six more little Night Goblins, then a Boss, Shaman, 3 Fanatics, and I'm done on the Goblin front for a while. Gotta paint some Squigs eventually...
The bit I'm least looking forward to is the small critters, which are kinda essential for gameplay purposes - Snotlings, Bats, Rats and Spiders. I'm going to have to start them soon while my enthusiasm for the project is still high, because if I leave them until the end they'll never get painted!
-
FANTASTIC ADDITIONS! While I prefer the older plastic Goblins...different strokes & all that, your Little Green Guys look WONDERFULLY nasty, AND the Minotaur is an OUTSTANDING creation. VERY WELL DONE one & all!
-
Woohoo! Received an unexpected parcel today, and it was my Kickstarter stuff from the Zealot Miniatures Twisted Catacombs campaign.
Particularly impressed by the 'boss door' - totally going to use this when the Objective Room gets drawn in Warhammer Quest.
I don't have time to photograph everything right now, but I'm incredibly impressed by the quality. There are doors (large and small), piles of little skulls and bones for base detailing, treasure chests, flagons, bottles, candlesticks, tables, a well (of doom), trap markers, spiral staircase, portcullis... so much stuff. A big reminder that this project is not just about the minis - looks like I'll be painting some 3D dungeon components now too :-)
-
Oooh, nifty! I'll be sitting next to the mailbox the coming days... if I was not going on holiday :s
Looking forward to seeing the scenery painted.
-
That's a true box-full-of-goodness. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it (and everything else, as a WHQ fan I love this thread). :)
-
I was sad I was broke when that came around...I hope they have a good retail option.
-
Cheers guys - I'm really looking forward to painting some scenery, but I've got a long way to go yet ;)
Here's that test model I hinted at the other day - a humble Snotling! It was meant to be a fast and dirty paintjob using predominantly washes, but it didn't turn out so good, so I ended up painting him properly. Not sure how quick it'll be to paint another 11 like this lol
(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5818/20572913448_db1c17e780_z.jpg)
Anyhow, I'm going to set it aside until I've got my Night Goblin contingent done at least.
I gave waaaay too much thought to the base - 25mm bases look far too big for the critters in the box. I had a look at 20mm rounds off eBay, and even had a go at sculpting some flagstones onto them, which looked okay but was pretty time consuming. Then I realised that trying to remove 12 bats and 12 tiny rat paws from their stands just to pin them to a base was insane. In the end I just left the little guy as he was and painted the base plain black, and actually I think it looks nice and tidy!
-
Another weekend gone, another lot of minis finished. I now have all 12 Goblins required for a Level 1 Adventure.
Goblin Archers:
While I was at it, I painted a Night Goblin Champion up to act as a boss. Really fancied a go at doing the classic checkerboard pattern that you used to see on GW Orcs & Goblins back in the day. Quite pleased with how it turned out.
Close-up of that shield, which was weirdly hard to paint considering it's mostly one colour. Getting the hang of painting yellow now though!
I'm ashamed to say I've put off painting those Snotlings again, although I'm not quite done with greenskins yet. Hopefully more to show next week :)
-
Got a sinking feeling that my updates may start getting sporadic. Tomorrow we go to pick up a puppy to join our little family. Mrs Psyberwyche is already eyeing up my hobby area for the puppy's playpen. I'm determined to stick to one update a week if humanly possible. Let's see who wins the turf war lol
-
Time to elevate the hobby area...on stilts...and paint above the pup. Problem solved.
-

So far no miniatures have been chewed - can't say the same for everything else lol
He has a weird phobia of black boxes, which means he sits and stares at my figure cases (and the barbecue outside), barks at them, then runs off. Weird little dog.
-
Still on the greenskins kick, and not *totally* distracted by the new addition to the household, here's the fruits of my labour this bank holiday weekend - a metal Night Goblin Shaman. this is a model I had sitting around for ages, because I have a tatty old Orc & Goblin army for Warhammer, some of which I'm stripping and repainting for this project. I never got round to this one though, which is a shame because a very nice, crisp model to paint. Hope you like it!
-
And a couple of detail shots for good measure, because this model has a ton of small details - the mushrooms and cauldron of fungus brew, and the tiny Snotling familiar are great touches!

Are you suggesting I'm putting off painting the Snotlings? Well, the fact that I'm still painting, and the things on my desk *aren't* Snotlings, should tell you that you're absolutely right! lol
-
Cracking work all around Psyberwyche! I've just spent the last wee while going through your thread. Thats sime great painting! My particular favourite has to be the dwarf. I love the colours you've achieved on the face! :-*
-
Cheers AndyM! The Slayer was such a lovely model to paint. All the old metal models from that particular range had fantastic definition and character. I still need to get round to replacement heroes for the core box - Barbarian next I think, then Dwarf and Wizard.
-
FANTASTIC WORK on the Goblins...you captured their psycho persona quite nicely. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Welp, I think I'm going to bring my Goblin painting to an end for the timebeing, so I decided to paint something a bit more wacky and fun. Enter the whirling loonies, aka Night Goblin Fanatics.
Had a lot of fun with these guys, although I got some pretty bad mouldings that I wasn't thrilled with. Lots of chopping and changing, shaving off bits of grass at the feet and so on, allowing me to pose them in unusual ways and rebase them for my dungeon. Pretty pleased with the overall result.
I'm going to do some work on filling out more monster groups next (I know, I know, I keep saying that).
-
Very cool, gonna be hard to stuff them in a dungeon! lol
-
Nice addition. 8)

Hence I have no plans to make the dungeon rooms 3D. All two-dimensional tiles, and lots of artistic licence! lol
-
Extra update this week, largely as I'm not sure I'll be able to post anything next week due to various commitments. Got massively sidetracks by these old Heroquest Mummies. I needed two more Mummies to finish my Undead dungeon section for the time-being, and just couldn't resist (sorry Elbows, no Snotlings again this week).
Unfortunately, my rose-tinted spectacles were in full effect - these models are awful to paint lol Still, they're done, and now I have six mummies, 12 skeletons, 6 zombies and a Necromancer for the Undead contingent.
-
They might have been horrible to paint, but they turned out fantastic! The red eyes are a great touch.
-
Ok so I cant really put my thoughts down on here for this thread. The most I can muster is WOW just WOW :D Very well done and very nice painting on all of these miniatures so far :) Keep them coming :D
-
wonderfull thread to browse through.
Lovely models in incredible paintjobs.
I've been meaning to update my own heroquest, but other shiny stuff keeps distracting me.
keep it coming.
-
The miniatures may not be all that wonderful, but the painting is OUTSTANDING...VERY WELL DONE once more!
-
Too kind everyone, too kind.
Having a blast with this project. It's something I've wanted to do since I first picked up the game eons ago, but is only now feasible because I'm a proper grown up. Honest.
Youth is wasted on the young ;)

(slaps you over the head with a dead snotling) GET TO WORK!

(slaps you over the head with a dead snotling) GET TO WORK!
Brace yourself. I might (MIGHT) prep 11 more Snotlings today. And if that's successful, I might even spray them. Which means that, by the end of 2016, I MIGHT have conjured the required motivation to paint them... lol
-
WOA :-* :-* :-*
I've always had a soft spot for WQ! Amazing project and superb painting!
Keep going! And ditto to Elbows lol
-
Lovely work - especially on the mummies (which I know first hand are... er, tricky to paint nicely!).

All joking aside, I'm a little surprised you didn't get some alternative snotling models for them - you replaced a lot of the other creatures already, and other snotling sculpts are frankly rather fun to paint (somewhat like Nurglings in fact!).
When you get around to doing Chaos (you are doing Chaos, right?), will you paint models around each of the four gods, or will you be going down the Undivided route with only themed daemons?
-

You say that. I have previously painted 20-odd of them for my old Orcs & Goblins army, with another 20 or so unpainted in the loft, and there are several reasons why I haven't gone down that route:
1. They are fun, characterful and nostalgic sculpts. But they're also messy, rushed and bloody tiny. Great en masse on a multi-base, but eye-bleeding when based singly.
2. Which brings me to the subject of basing. The old metal Snotlings are attached to huge wads of metal, designed to be disguised with green stuff on a multi-base. The wads of metal don't look at all neat, so I'd have to cut them off carefully, and pin those teeny, tiny, frankly malformed feet to another base to match my dungeon. An expensive resin base at a fiver for ten. That's alot of work...
3. The plastic ones, although not brilliant, are larger, and much more cleanly sculpted and cast - I can do a much nicer paint job much quicker, and the bases are integral so no pinning is required.
4. As with the rats, spiders, and bats (which I could also use rebased metal models for, but am not gonna), you only ever need 12 of each, and in game terms they are a minor inconvenience at best. They really aren't worth the extra effort when I look at the 200+ models I still have to paint!
When you get around to doing Chaos (you are doing Chaos, right?), will you paint models around each of the four gods, or will you be going down the Undivided route with only themed daemons?
Naturally I'm doing Chaos ;) - I already have everything I need up to level 5 in my burgeoning Ebay pile. Not totally sure about the basic warriors - I've never been a fan of Chaos Undivided/Undecided, as it doesn't mesh with the old Realms of Chaos background that I really love. I'll probably pick one Chaos God for the basic warriors (Khorne is the most sensible, but I've always been fond of Slaanesh, oo-er). I already have a bunch of Chaos Champions - old metal ones - of varying alignments, so they'll more of a mixed bag.
I've actually been saving those fellas as a treat for when I finish these bloomin' greenskins.
-
Re: snotlings, fair enough! lol
Re: Chaos Warriors (and Thugs/Marauders if they are in WHQ - I can't remember the exact bestiary contents all that well), I would be tempted to do a few (3-4) in each colour for the four gods, together with a few (3-4) in a more neutral scheme. That way, you can have them properly themed to each god, but by adding the neutral ones to the themed ones when you play, it saves painting a good few models. Your classic Champions would be on top of those, naturally! :P
-
That's a rather good idea. The maximum you ever need is 12 (2D6). At earlier levels it's D6 Chaos Warriors (no Marauders, although I'm tempted to just mix them in and 'count as').
-
Another week, another single figure, because life is getting in the way of my project. However, it's a model I've been looking forward to painting for ages - the Barbarian from Statuesque Miniatures. I said at the beginning I was going to replace the Barbarian, Dwarf and Wizard from the set, so this is the first of those:
I've said it before and I'll say it again: The Statuesque dungeon adventurers are probably the cleanest cast metal minis I've ever bought, and are a joy to paint!
In other news: Important Snotling Update for Elbows - They are finally undercoated and ready to paint!!! lol
-
Brilliant! :-*
I think i like that better than the 'offical' paint job! Well done! 8)
-

Praise indeed! The official one was crisper - I certainly don't quite have the eye for that level of finish. But I didn't like the bright red cape lining inside a black cloak - it seemed a bit too opulent for a Barbarian. So I went with a grimy look - he looks like he's been stuck down a filthy dungeon for a few days, and is really cross about it! lol
-
I don't really care for the face sculpt. He looks like an ogre...
The paintjob is top-notch as always, though.
-
I don't really care for the face sculpt. He looks like an ogre...
They are a caricatured set of minis, for sure (and who says he can't have a bit of Ogre in him? He's a marauder from the frozen north, after all ;). I actually think they're more Warhammery than the actual Warhammer Quest figures lol
-
Cheers chaps.
I've picked out my Dwarf already. I'm in two minds about which Wizard I'm going to use - I've got a cool one from Reaper minis, and an old Warhammer battle wizard. I'll either post up some snaps of the two models and take suggestions, or just bite the bullet and paint both. Who doesn't like a good wizard, eh?
-
What a WONDERFUL nose! The rest of his oh-so-expressive face is equally impressive...FANTASTIC WORK on an OUTSTANDING miniature!
-

Thanks Nala - your messages are always so motivating. Warms the cockles of my heart :-)
-
imposing bad guy! Very nice miniature and very well painted. Quote about the PJ, much better with the grimy look! It's a ferocious barbarian not a elf princess! lol
-
I feel like I start every other post with 'I got distracted. so...' lol
Last week I really did get distracted, massively so! I was searching in the attic for some extra bits for the project, and came across a case of Vampire Counts figures for Warhammer 6th edition. In that case was one of my favourite old minis, painted to a very basic 'army standard' - the Varghulf (for non Warhammer players, it's a Vampire/Werewolf hybrid trope).
So, even though this beastie has no rules in Warhammer Quest, I decided to rebase him and repaint him anyway! I'll cook up some rules somewhere along the the way, but for the time being he was just fun to revisit.
Pictures were really tricky - my homemade lightbox setup struggles with anything larger than a 40mm based critter, so hope these look okay.

Oh thats the dogs danglies!! :-* You really can easily forget just how good some of the GW models are!
-
An excellent model, and your efforts (even if "basic Army-standard") still show him off wonderfully! :)
Any thoughts on which ghouls you'll use for your undead models? :)
-
Awesome additions. Love the werebatwolf thing.
-
The varghulf is just eye droppingly good. Really terrific. I am so impressed. The paint job is just outstanding.

Ah, sorry - I repainted as well as rebased - not trying to show off! He was pretty much basecoated/drybrushed/washed before, so I gave him a thorough makeover following my new 'paint everything as nicely as I can' ethos ;-)
As for the ghouls, I was going to use Paul Muller's originally, mixed with a few old metal GW; but while I was up in the loft I found 3 boxes of unassembled GW plastics that I hoarded and totally forgot about, so it looks like I'll be using those! lol

Thank you! (all the feelz) ;)

Great thread, some really nice paint work! The dwarf slayer is fantastic

Oh, that is a nice model. Would like one of those.
Those open wounds really look realistic. Wonderful as always.

I've made a fair bit of use of the technical paint 'Blood for the Blood God' during this project (which is virtually identical to Tamiya Clear Red). Never really used it before as it seemed a bit OTT, but used sparingly it looks really... icky!

You did great with the blood paint! I tend to go about OTT when I use it, but you've created a great effect.

I'd have to agree with that. The agrellan earth is a great paint as well.

Barely had the time to get anything finished last week, but my messy painting area is strewn with half-done and barely-started minis, so I decided to get cracking and finish some of them!
Behold: a Night Goblin Boss, which almost completes my Night Goblin contingent for Dungeon Levels 1-5! (Just need a few Squigs and herders).

wonderful stuff!

Great goblin model, Great paint job and a HUGE well done :D

very nice gobbo! :-*
Love the model...perfect for a dungeon!
now we need a goblin groupshot :P

No update for over a week. Ugh - so much going on right now that my painting time has been eaten away. However, I have made a few choice purchases for the project on Evilbay. Foremost among them are these beauties - a pair of Khorne champions.
I remember really wanting these models when I were a young 'un, and drooling over the Mike McVey paint jobs, but couldn't afford them with my pocket money. Ah, the perks of being an adult but still a big kid at heart ;-)
I've mentioned before that I'm saving my Chaos Champions as a treat for when I've got the basic set finished, but I might crack...
-
It's amazjng these models STILL hold up to today's standards of sculpting! If someine newly made them today, they'd still be highly sought after!
BTW that's just teasing.... showing those great models then telling us you're leaving it to last! :(
-
Well, inevitably the project stalled when real life intervened. However, my enthusiasm hasn't waned, even though my time for painting has!
This week I received my Dungeon Saga Kickstarter rewards from Mantic. For $25 USD, I got a Dragon, some card floor tiles, and a bunch of Dungeon scenery.
Highlights from the scenery set:
Some bits that I can't use because they're really bendy (I could maybe heat them up/freeze them, and/or pin them, but it's too much hassle):

But the crowning glory, and worth the price of the reward tier all on it's own - the Dragon. So impressed with this model! (Skaven shown for scale).
That's all for now, but just finishing the first bit of painting I've done for weeks, so hopefully more updates soon.
-
Can't wait to see what you do with this. Got the call from my folks that my box has arrived (yes, I sent KS to my folks house because I move around every couple of years...and with KS taking 1-2 years, I just feel safer doing it that way!). The terrain was underwhelming in some pictures, but your pics make me a bit more hopeful. I'll see how much of my stuff was bent.
Odd, how today, 20+ years on they can't match the precision and quality of plastic stuff from say Hero Quest. Kinda odd. ???
When are you going to tackle that dragon?
-
Yeah, the scenery is actually better in real life than in the photos, although the plastic is soft. The solid bits like doors and bookshelves are great though. I also have the Zealot minis scenery, which us better still.
I want to paint the dragon now, but I have no use for it for ages... ;)
-
How long ago did your Zealot stuff arrive? Have a buddy who's been waiting on his for a while now...I didn't have the funds to get in on that stuff (sigh)

End of August. I'd advise him to chase them up (their email responses were excellent).

Boil some water, and fill a bowl or large mug. Then dip the bent models into the hot water for a time (swords and legs take a couple of seconds, but thick parts take a bit longer), and carefully fish them out with a fork. Don't let the water get cold! When you retreive the parts from the hot water, straighten them out and hold them in place until they cool a bit (shouldn't take long). Then, still holding them in the desired position after they've cooled a bit, run them under a really cold tap, or dunk them in a large bowl of cold water with a couple of ice cubes in it.
This technique can also be used to re-pose models. :)

Correction: I just saw the latest update saying that only a third of pledges have been fulfilled. They did much better than expected, and I think they're sending orders out in order of pledge (I backed in the first few hours).
-
Cool project. I backed the Dungeon Saga KS for exactly the same set as you. Can't wait to see yours painted, should give me some inspiration. Thanks for sharing.
-
Thanks for the bump, psyberwyche - I would've missed this great thread completely. Fantastic painting on some fun old (and not so old) models!
I hear you regarding the HQ mummies. It's hard to not end up with something out of Scooby Doo. You did well with yours though!
-
Gosh, how time flies! This thread is so old now that this is almost threadomancy. Real life (and conflicting hobby projects) have really got in the way of this little quest.
Thankfully, I have some new stuff to show, so hopefully I'll be forgiven.
Just finished a Minotaur, and almost done with a Dwarf adventurer. More soon!

Awesome, I love seeing this thread pop back up. It does make you feel bad when you think "I'll go update my thread..." and it's on page 3, or the forum says "Nothing has been posted in 120 days..."
lol
-
Not as bad as I feel when I read through the last few pages and realise I *still* haven't finished those Snotlings lol
-
Old school colour styles mixed with new school painting techniques equals epic win! I love your stuff!!

Minotaur is great!

Brill! 8) Where's the big guy from?
Ebay job, I'm afraid. Late 90s Citadel. Very old skool, but good Minotaurs at a reasonable price are otherwise hard to find.
-
A while back I posted a pic of the Mantic dragon I got in the Dungeon Saga Kickstarter. Still not totally sure how I'm going to paint it, but I gave some thought to rebasing it.
I measured up, and it seemed like the ideal size was 85-90mm round. Unfortunately, Fenris do no such bases in either of the ranges I use. Anyhoo, I decided to have a go myself. So I ordered a 90mm round laser-cut disc in 3mm ply, and sculpted a base to (roughly) match the Fenris temple bases I use. A few Dark Arts Studios coin piles, and Bob's your mother's brother.

Now, where did I put that dragon?
-
A good update to the project this weekend. Finally finished my alternative Dwarf adventurer - just the Wizard to go!
A hard one to photograph for some reason - it doesn't look as dark in the flesh, but hopefully you get the idea.
Pushed myself with this mini, actually learning a new technique called 'the loaded brush' on the cloak (check Youtube for some great tutorial videos). Also did some advanced colour theory, shading the dark turquoise with a reddish-brown. Quite pleased with the result!
Only the Wizard to go from the four main heroes. I actually have it narrowed down to three models, but can't decide which one to go for lol
-
Oh he's trick! Very much like the look of him.
-
Wow! I love that cloak! :-*
-
One of the best miniatures themed project I ever seen....
I love the painting and how you have done the bases.
-
Also love the cloak :-* and all the other work in this topic. Keep 'm coming!
-
Thanks for the support everyone.
I have my third and final Minotaur done! (Well, final until I do the Minotaur Lord, but that's for another day).

As I've said before on this thread, when you play the first few games of Quest, you *really* don't want to meet all three Minotaurs. That always results in total party kill... :D
-
This is one of my favourite threads. Everything looks great.

Ah, the memories!

Some great painting in this thread, the minotaurs in particular. Back when I played WHQ with my little brother I actually used to like it when 3 turned up at once - this might have been because I usually played a troll slayer! lol

I was going to say, since I only ever played a Troll Slayer I don't remember minding it so much - but it did kick the crap out of the player group most of the time. We've been discussing running a big Warhammer Quest game (possibly using DF terrain in place of cards)...I'm looking forward to it.
-
Great group! :-*
-
Prepare thyself for some serious threadomancy, adventurer...
Yes, that's right. The Warhammer Quest project may have taken a break, but it's certainly not dead. There's a bunch of models on my painting table nearing completion, but first, I wanted to come back with a bang. With something incredible and eye-popping. Are you ready? Are you?
Behold...
12 Snotlings! lol

(This post is dedicated to Elbows, because he probably thought I'd never paint these pesky little greenskins...)
More to follow soon!
-
Just put the finishing touches on this guy today. The Boss for my greenskin contingent.

This is a promo figure for the ill-fated Warhammer Online video game. Had him on my painting table for a very long time, but he's a real pain to paint up. I remember this figure getting a fair bit of flak, because he's so static and chunky. While that's true, there's something very characterful about him and his pet Grot, so I decided to use him in my Quest project. On a 40mm base, however, he's a real beast!
Obligatory rear view for the completionists, although he's a bit boring from the back:

Awesome work on that fella.
-
The Big Green Guy & his equally Green if somewhat smaller Associate are BEAUTIFULLY painted creations. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Faaaaan-tastic! I really love the mini troll-slayer heads on the goblin! :-*
-
He's magnificent!
-
I actually really like the model. GW Orcs are meant to be chunky.
It has the right ammount of detail for a character model, though I understand it's a doozy to paint.
And you did a cracking job on it.
-
Thanks for the kind words fellas. I'm currently assembling a horde of Skaven and a few more minor gribblies - I'm so close to having the base set finished now, plus a load of add-ons, that I'm inspired to get back into the thick of the project.
In the meantime, however, I've repurposed a model from my other big obsession of the moment - Zombicide: Black Plague! Baldric the Wizard is now one of my Warhammer Quest Wizards. Not sure I like painting this bendy plastic tbh, but I'm happy with how he turned out.

-
End-result certainly is nice!
Makes a good heroic character. They might make a good adventuring party for skirmish games as well, I imagine.
-
Well done. I had considered painting my Black Plague stuff but after receiving it have decided otherwise.
-
Well done. I had considered painting my Black Plague stuff but after receiving it have decided otherwise.
Yeah, I'm definitely not going to paint the whole set. I hate the bendy plastic (it's really hard to clean up). Some of the sculpts are... iffy. With a few exceptions, the detail really isn't great. So I went on eBay and managed to get a spare Baldric, and one of each type of zombie so I could do some test paints rather than break into my Kickstarter set. This is why I decided not to paint the rest!
Here are the other test models I did. I like them, but not enough to paint any more of em, and they definitely don't work for Warhammer Quest.

Thinking of using that Abomination as a Possessed in Mordheim though!

Finished up an old metal Orc Shaman that's been on my painting table for... maybe years! lol

What a sourpuss. Someone give him a piece of candy.

Someone give him a piece of candy.
I think someone did: that's why he's only got one tooth left.
It's quite some painting that can stand up to such an extreme close-up, psyberwyche.
-
Love that model. I have one laying about for some years as well. When I was working on my Orcs and Goblins I had to have that specific model.
Lovely work on it, as usual. The lip really makes him come to life.
-
I just found this thread. Its a visual bonanza.
Wonderful work psyberwyche!
-
Psyber, great minis and project, CONGRATULATIONS! :-*
Well done. I had considered painting my Black Plague stuff but after receiving it have decided otherwise.
The only Zombicide Black Plague figure worth of painting IMHO is Piper. :-*

She is not-Michelle Pfeiffer :-* in the movie Ladyhawke (1985) ;)

Wonderful and impressive work here ...! :-*
-
Thanks for all the kind words guys! Making a start on my Skaven now. I realised that I'm scarily close to finishing the basic set, and that's given me the motivation to push on :)
-
THREADOMANCY!!!
Haven't updated this project in ages. I got hugely distracted by Conan, and Marvel super heroes, and Batman... BUT I have been plugging away with Warhammer quest still.
I haven't finished those pesky Skaven yet (at least they're now assembled and joining the paint queue). This little fellow has been on the desk for months though, so I present to you Flimbo Bagshot, the Halfling Thief.

Nice addition, a little threadomancy can be a good thing!

Indeed!

Nice halfling!!! Don't care much for those plastic figures though

He's brilliant! Your best yet! :-*

Cheers! But which plastic figures?

Back again - I seem to have rediscovered my Quest mojo.
At the moment I'm struggling with my camera setup. I've just made a new lightbox, but my lights just aren't as good as the trusty old ones I started this thread with, and the colour balancing/;lighting is all over the place.
While I work it out, I did a new test model for some Skaven Clanrats. In the end I took this snap on my phone, and it's not bad. I'm happy with this test model anyhow, so I'm going to batch-paint five more to start with. I need 12 Clanrats and a champion/warlord model, and I'm using the Island of Blood two-part plastics, which save a lot of assembly time, and look pretty good I think!
-
They look super - and the IoB Skaven are actually lovely models too.
In fact, apart from not painting all the IoB clanrats ('cos you will never need more than about 12), the other Skaven models are all great for WHQ too. :)
-
Incredibly, I've managed to keep pace with this project log, ready for another Monday update.
I just secured one off eBay, so eventually I'll be painting him along two more basic Minotaurs to match the one above
I'm responding to an OLD post from this thread, but if you're looking for a Citadel Minotaur, I highly recommend the one from their Advanced Dungeons & Dragons line. I love the big belly. (http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/VkEAAOSwnH1WWv8A/s-l300.jpg)
-
Sorry those zombiecide ones!
-
Started motoring along again. I was very happy with my colour test Skaven, so I completed five of his buddies.
Here's a couple of close-ups of the heavily armoured ratty:

Next up: a Warlord, Grey Seer, six more Clanrats, and 12 Rats.
-
Those skaven are great! Really menacing!
-
Very nice - a few more, and you'll be able to play the old Advanced Hero Quest adventures too! Also, that old WD Skaven campaign... ;)
-
The name's O'Mancy. Thread O'Mancy.
Because I'm still plodding along with this project, which may indeed turn out to be a lifelong endeavour...
Anyhow, here's a Skaven Warlord to lead my Ratties. Imposing figure (a tad impractical for a burrowing dungeon-dweller, yes-yes), but terrible to photograph. Where's his perfect angle? There isn't one! lol
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4516/38079856546_16a7aede2c_z.jpg)
Close-up of the Rat King.

Stellar...awesome work.
-
Managed to plough on with more painting this weekend. Amazing, I know! Behold, one of the oldest of old skool figures in the collection, the Grey Seer:
Had a lot of fun with this guy, although the casting I bought off eBay left a lot to be desired. It had obviously been stripped of paint, there were lots of little fibres stuck to the metal (some of which I couldn't remove), and the lead was a bit pitted - hopefully not the dreaded lead rot!
Next up, I need to paint six more Clanrats, and 12 little rats. Then I'll take a break from Skaven for a bit and maybe paint another hero. My old Imperial Noble is giving me wistful looks from the painting table...
-
So I finally completed the laborious task of cleaning up all those little critters - bats, rats and spiders. 36 in total. I was going to just paint the rats for now, but I figured why not try to do them all, assembly-line style.
Here's a quick colour test:
Could be neater, especially the bat, but these guys are so 'throwaway' in game terms that it seems daft to labour too long on them.
Anyway, a quick head count of my collection so far has gotten me rather excited. This project has been plagued by distractions - zombies and skeletons, bonus heroes, mummies, trolls, etc. So much so that I lost sight of the original goal, which was to paint a replacement core set first. Well, it turns out that when these 36 critters are done, I'm only 6 Skaven Clanrats away from that goal.
So here I go - a complete Warhammer Quest set by the New Year? Maybe even Christmas for some Yuletide gaming? Wish me luck!
-
Just found this thread and WOW! I am IMPRESSED!
Great minis, great paintjobs. It turns back time and I find myself sitting on the floor at a friends house, playing Warhammer Quest (but without paintjobs).
-
Very nice. Those littlest minis look great.

Many thanks for the kind words. And yes, this project is a pure nostalgia trip. I think it'll keep me busy for years...

BEHOLD! twelve prepped and undercoated doors...
Okay, so not the most exciting update for content, BUT very exciting for what it represents. Because it means I now have everything assembled and in some stage of painting for the final run-in. Soon, I'll have a base set of Warhammer Quest to play with...
-
Always loved those doorways

Just went through all the pages in this thread.. lovely work!

Me too...

Very nice - a few more, and you'll be able to play the old Advanced Hero Quest adventures too! Also, that old WD Skaven campaign... ;)
Funnily enough I do have that issue, along with all the cards and floorplans. Never played it - but now... :-D
-
Just gone through every page, enduring the cruel, lingering wait for snotlings to appear. Well done that man! It's an interesting timeline of WH models through the ages. The red period-ness of WHQ never excited me but even those models look ok with a sensible colour scheme.
-

Many thanks. I'll be honest, the Snotlings almost killed my enthusiasm! lol
-
Oo, this thread's gone onto another page. Quick, a proper update is required!
I've just finished a colour test on one of the doors. Actually quite happy with this. It's a mobile phone pic so some of the subtle mossy colours and washes aren't showing up. Will sort out some better pics when they're all finished.

When I was younger I painted ten of these, doing them in various colours for different types of stone, marble, etc. To be honest it all got a bit garish, and I spent ages trying to match the right rooms to the right doors. Decided to save myself the hassle this time and go neutral.
This is a test piece, so I used various techniques. Maybe a bit too much blood? I'll go easy on the others.

When I was a lad I'd probably have painted the skulls as skulls just as I did when the y were part of a Space Marine's power armour. Not recommended.

This was always a long-running joke with my friends and I, when we'd grown up a bit and looked at our old minis. Teeny-tiny skulls, or gigantic skulls, or flat face-plate skulls, all painted like actual skulls... lol (In our defence, the Eavy Metal painters of the day often did the same).

Perhaps one (just one) BOSS DOOR painted differently?

You've done a very good job painting these old castings. Adds tons of flavour.

Years in the making, and I honestly couldn't have done it without your encouragement. Merry Christmas folks.
(And it doesn't stop there, the expansions and monster tables will keep me busy for some time yet. Watch this space!)
-
Great work! Sometimes it's good to have some light entertainment, and that Warhammer Quest box looks like just the thing.
Plus your 12 days of Warhammer-ness song is wonderful!
-
Very nice, I always feel a weird sort of happiness and ennui after a completing a game like that. Looks fantastic!
-
Warhammer Quest is far more than some light entertainment. lol While the game mechanics themselves are a bit "meh", the depth of the game (obviously you're a bit limited by the minis in the box at first) is tremendous. Loads of potential, character building, skills, abilities, treasure, etc.
-

Yep. The core rules are perhaps too wedded to Warhammer for their own good, and yet I don't think it's been bettered yet. Descent probably comes closest, but it's too fussy by half. The WHQ roleplay book is just bags of fun.
Very nice, I always feel a weird sort of happiness and ennui after a completing a game like that. Looks fantastic!
Many thanks, and totally agree. Mind you, my 2018 goal now is to paint everything from the old Undead expansion (or their modern equivalents), at least two more heroes, and hopefully finish all the monster tables up to level 3 at least!
-
Lovely painting! As for the song? Fantastic! Can't wait to see what else becomes of this little 'finished' project.
-
Well, after the excitement of painting 36 tiny creatures and 6 Skaven in about three days, and hitting the Christmas target, I decided to ring in the New Year with a new adventurer.
Introducing Franz von Kreiger, the Imperial Noble.

Top brushwork - the face is superb.
OUTSTANDING! Your Dashing Swashbuckler is a BEAUTIFULLY painted reaction. VERY WELL DONE!
I got to do one a few years ago for a friend it is a wonderful mini to paint. When it came out it was the most expensive single mini I had seen
...an outrageous $15. Now that isn't an unusual price to pay for a nicely sculpted miniature.
-
Brilliant brush work! Great colours! :-*
-
Yeah, that is supremely well done! Bravo.
-
Thanks for the kind comments. I've had that Noble mini for ages, and was really looking forward to getting him painted.
Just going through the photos and realised I hadn't uploaded my second batch of Skaven, so here they are:
Next up: Undead!
-
Very nice work finishing that. (Sorry a bit late in the reply here)
I've been playing this with my son recently and have just made up a whole bunch of new cards for events. Great to see everything painted. It gives me enthusiasm to get my set painted.
-
Next up on the workbench: I'm starting the Catacombs of Terror models. I'm using the classic Tomb Guardians, but replacing the seated Liche King with an Otherworld Miniatures Liche, just because a standing, single-based figure can be used in more adventures.
-
He fits in perfectly, solid choice!
-
Before I get on with this big batch of Undead painting, I thought I'd show off this little acquisition - three Wraiths from Black Tree Designs (with a rebased Luthor the Hunchback tagging along). These might be the only BTD minis I actually like.
I got them because GW weirdly discontinued Wraiths from their range, and I only had one. (Such an odd evolution - sell metal ones in blisters of three, then raise the price while reducing them to blisters of 1, then get rid of the metal ones and replace them with a single-pose plastic, change the name to Cairn-Wraiths, then discontinue them altogether despite having spent money on plastic tooling very recently, and now making people's models obsolete. But hey...)
*Cough* I think it might be obvious that I was a Vampire Counts player back in the day ;)
Anyway, behold:
-
Those BTD Wraiths are excellent. Got them too.
Indeed everything here is excellent, the idea, the models, the painting! :)
-
Those are great wraiths. On my next btd order.
-
True to my word, I've started 2018's endeavours with the Undead from the Catacombs of Terror expansion. First up: Tomb Guardians.
These guys were an absolute joy to paint, and really stand up well to the more current minis in the colleciton.
Rear view.
EXTREME CLOSE UP. WOOOAAAHH!!!
Only question now is, do the two guys in guard positions need shields or not? The original minis didn't have them, but I've got loads of nice undead shields I could give them Thoughts?
-
Love those undead
-
Keep up the good work, love your minis and paintjobs!
Shields? Only if they add something spectacular, don't want them to obscure your wonderful work!
-
Quick mobile phone snap, and a blu-tacked shield.
So... shields or not?
-
I'm putting a shield on mine, so would recommend the same. Then again, if it has any game mechanical influence, you have to decide based on that. Halberds were usually not used with a shield...
Good looking models!
-
I would leave them without shields they just look better
-
I would leave them without shields they just look better
I concur!
-
No shields! They are carrying two-handed weapons, and the pose is defiant without the shield.
-
No shields, but don't let the shields go to waste!
-
I think no shields is the consensus. Thanks everyone!
-
Latest figure. I strayed from the path of Liches and their ilk, and went for an even bigger bad for the Undead: the Vampire Lord.
this is a metal Vlad von Carstein figure, and it's probably one of the best paintjobs I've ever done. Certainly spent longer on this mini than I have on anything in the last 20 years, and mostly on his weird flayed-skin cloak with spectral-trapped-souls. This is it guys, I've peaked! All downhill from here. lol
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4619/28279982869_e299ab8e6e_c.jpg)
Obligatory rear view:
Have a face close-up (although it looks a bit ugly this close tbh, but I don't mind doing a warts-and-all shot):
-
Now that...is crazy frikkin' good. You should be proud of that paintjob.
-
Amazing paintjob!
-
Yes that is awesome, anything downhill from that will still be amazing.
-
Lovely vampire! Not sure I'd ever say those two words together, but here we are! lol
-
Magnificent work on that paintjob! I wouldn't worry about how it looks in the close-up (great, to be honest!): it's already several times its size in the other shot, and it looks superb!
-
Not for the first time, extreme Threadomancy ahoy.... lol
This is one of those lifetime hobby projects that'll never truly be finished, and periodically I go back to it. I've started a whole bunch of Warhammer Quest figures recently - the beauty of this game is that you can paint a bit of what you fancy whenever you like, and it'll always find a use!
Anyway, I couldn't revive such an old thread without showing something good. I recently treated myself to painting this Wardancer hero, who's been on my lead pile for around 20 years. Such a joy to paint! I've painted loads of modern resins lately, and they all lack that certain something when compared to these old Citadel sculpts. Nostaglia overdrive...
And from the back (HAIR METAL!)
I'll try not to leave it so long for the next update... :D
-
That is one lovely Wardancer!
Great work!
-
Love the tats, they fit so well.
-
Extremely well done. Great colour scheme and I second that the tattoos work well on him. Blends are smooth and the TMM is nicely done with a bit of variation.
-
Gosh darn it! I only went and painted something else! lol
Way back in this thread, I showed a photo of some Black Tree Designs Wraiths that I bought, because GW had stopped making Wraith units. Well, it's taken me so long to paint them, that GW has started making Wraith units again. But I have carried on regardless!
So here you go, three alternative metal Wraiths:
I realised that at higher levels, WHQ requires D3+1 Wraiths instead of just D3. So I'm currently working on a spare GW plastic mini to make up the numbers.
-
Nice minis well painted.
-
Well done
-
I do agree! While I also like many aspects of the new wave of plastic models (allowing for huge robots, thin connections etc.), these old, charming, comical GW models will always have a place in my heart.
It’s a mixture of very high craftsmanship, glamrock, punk and over-the-top poses that make them so enjoyable.
And yeah: Warhammer Quest was one of the best things they ever did!
-
Love them skellies, great work!
-
Fantastic! I love the colour of the skeletons! 8)
-
Another small update, as I got my fourth and final Wraith finished.
This time, a [[gasp]] brand new plastic model from the Shadespire range. Have to confess he's a cool figure. I plan on painting the rest of the box eventually as Undead champions.
And from the back:

-
Nice work, particularly on the wraiths. The skeleton is also great - that Shadespire box is excellent. Shame it went up in price.
-
Lovely work on the skellyman. The rust is really well done!
-
The resurgence continues, with another Elf! The third Elf Warrior I've painted for this project. A friend asked if we could play a 4-Elf party, so now, with the inclusion of the Wardancer, we can!
I actually have YET ANOTHER Elf on the painting table right now, and I still need to do the Elf Ranger warrior pack. Which is all very ironic because I absolutely hate Elves lol (always more of a Dwarf chap, although I have to confess the old metal Elf miniatures are lovely).
From the back:
And the details. I was inspired by the Oldhammer Wood Elves painted by Mike McVey, with their turquoise dags and Native American-esque patterns.

Lovely work all round mate! I've been through the entire thread, and this Trollslayer is easily my favourite from your log. I hope he slayed suitable foes in his quest for release!
-
Great thread :)

Thank you :) that model is my favourite of all the ones I've painted. So naturally he rolls the most ones lol
Lovely work all round mate! I've been through the entire thread, and this Trollslayer is easily my favourite from your log. I hope he slayed suitable foes in his quest for release!
-
Thanks for reviving this thread. I haven't been a member long enough to have seen this one. Great looking figures.
-
I love that wardancer. Best of all the wardancer minis. Also the Black Tree wraiths have been on my wishlist a while. great to see them!
-
I painted another Elf! I really must stop with these pointy-eared weirdos lol
Anyway, I now have four Elf Warriors, plus a Wardancer, so my Elf-loving friends can finally have their all-Elf adventure. I just need to paint the High Elf Ranger warrior pack, the Lord of Aenarion, plus the long-awaited female Elf warrior (still haven't found the ideal candidate), and then I'll have painted enough elves to last a lifetime...
And the rear view of his 'adventuring' gear...
"Just like an Elf to bring a harp to a swordfight."

Prepare thyselves for some serious nostalgia...
Yep, Felix Jaegar, of Gotrek and Felix fame, has joined the party. I painted one of these when it was first released in the late 90s, but it got lost in a house move. So I bought a badly painted one on eBay for a cheap price, then stripped and repainted it. Such a joy to paint!
Probably use him as an alternative Imperial Noble, or possibly an Outlaw (using the custom rules from Littlemonk's WHQ forum).
Rear view for those of you who like red cloaks lol

-
fantastic job on Felix- I especially like the glow on the runes on Karaghul. White Dwarf did contain a scenario for Advanced Heroquest based on a Felix and Gotrex story, where you could play as the heroes.
-
Oh, Felix! Always wanted that mini but I never seem to get my hands on him. Lovely work on the pants, vertical lines can be such a bother, eh?
-
I'd forgotten how good this thread is. Being buried in my own project (inspired...20 years ago by the demise of WHQ...oddly), I'm now jealous of the smaller scale of some WHQ encounters. I love going back through this thread - very inspiring. Keep it up!

Cheers! when I started this adventure, you were one of the folk who gave me encouragement when I was struggling to get through hordes of finicky little critters lol
I've got more on the painting table. I keep wanting to add more heroes, but I still have a bunch of monsters to get through.
-
I don't think I ever posted this to the thread - remiss of me!
A while back, I tried to paint up the classic Pit Fighter warrior. TBF I had a slightly dodgy model - the nose got flattened somewhere along the line. But on top of that I just couldn't get on board with it. The sculpting and anatomy just seemed a bit off somehow, and it was no fun to paint. I stripped it and tried again, same energy. So I referred myself back to page 1 of this thread, where I outlined my project rules - only paint models I like!
So I looked around for bitz to make a pit fighter conversion. With a combination of old Empire flagellant weapons, a new GW gladiator-type-thingy (from Warcry I think, no idea what he's called), and a Chaos Marauder head, I bashed this fella into a reimagined Pit Fighter.
Now he waits in the gigantic painting queue for his turn in the spotlight...
He's a head taller than his predecessor (which is ok, as he's a hulking fantasy gladiator). But it does mean he needed a bigger base - the only hero so far to have a 30mm round base.
-
Nice revision. I think your original pit fighter looks great - and if you don't like him, these things still sell for decent money on eBay. Go make yourself $40 :D
-
Oh, Felix! Always wanted that mini but I never seem to get my hands on him. Lovely work on the pants, vertical lines can be such a bother, eh?
I went over the thread last night and realised I've now painted three heroes with blue-and-white striped trousers. And I have an Ogre on the go who also has blue and white striped trousers.
I... I think I have some kind of problem lol
-
Since making the comeback on this project, I've been alluding to monsters, and I've finally finished a really big one!
The Mantic Dragon has been on my painting pile for ages - earlier in this epic thread I mentioned it, and even made a custom base for it, but then it got sidelined. Finally, I found my inspiration, and I'm pretty pleased with how he turned out:
Cons:It's a bendy plastic/rubbery material, which is difficult to clean, and actually doesn't take paint that well (careful priming required). Quite tricky to achieve a flat basecoat, but once you get there it becomes much easier to get the details on. A lot of the textures and details had to be painted on, as the wings especially are quite featureless.
Pros: It's massive! The pose is really cool (I think), and it looks really imposing (more so that the various old Warhammer Dragons, I reckon). It's also really cheap for the size - this one was part of the Dungeon Saga Kickstarter, and I picked up another in one of Mantic's Black Friday sales for about £15. Serious bang for buck.
The face is really nicely detailed:
Painted detail on the wings (quite pleased with these):
Base detail (90mm laser cut MDF from warbases.co.uk. green stuff flagstones, and treasure piles from Dark Arts studios).
The only practical downside to really big monsters in the game is that they take up lots of space in the dungeon! I opted for a 90mm round base so it takes up 3x3 squares, but even for an Objective Room that's a lot. Luckily there are websites out there with large rooms as custom tiles, so my plan is to incorporate some of those into the set, and only allow extra-large monsters when large rooms are in play.
-
You know what this Warhammer dungeon is missing?
A little CHAOS!

Coming Soon...

A wonderful Dragon. fantastic

Happy Hallowe'en everyone!
I took a break from the Chaos Warriors (almost done though...) to paint a spooky old model from Lead Mountain. Presenting: Luthor the Hunchback.

Different sort of update today. Because, friends, I'm now living the dream!
Behold, a glass display cabinet, with a shelf devoted to WHQ, and professionally printed backdrops!
Each shelf has a different theme. So far I've got WHQ and Harry Potter. Need to get a few more minis painted and potentially making a superhero shelf, but that's for another thread :)
-
The right place for such a fine collection! I assume you put some more glass shelves in?
-
The right place for such a fine collection! I assume you put some more glass shelves in?
It has 4 sections, each one a glass cube, so I'm going for a different hobby project in each one.
-
First proper faction update for ages. I'm finally tackling Chaos in the Old World!
First up, the ubiquitous Chaos Warriors (I'll need 6 more eventually, but these will do for a while).
Something about these models. They're too uniform for my liking, but they do look menacing, and they're really lovely to paint! I went for a classic colour scheme of black and gold (using Darren Latham's excellent YouTube tutorial for painting black armour) rather than pick a Chaos Power. I plan to paint a bunch of god-specific Champions, so these guys need to look good alongside any of those.
Close up on one:
-
Like those a lot! :-*
The blue highlight of the black armor really makes them pop!
-
They look great, but yes, very uniform for chaos lol
-
Like those a lot! :-*
The blue highlight of the black armor really makes them pop!
Thanks!
they're slightly turquoise in the flesh - camera balance not quite right I guess. The technique I learned, which blew my mind a bit, was to do all the blends with blue-greys, then at the end make a glaze out of turquoise Contrast Paint. It smooths out the blends and provides a colour tint all in one. I've finally found a use for contrast paints!
-
Painted the first of my classic metal Chaos champions. Started with Slaanesh (because I'm weird like that).
I bloody love these old models. The thing about this one in particular is that, once you get paint on it, it becomes considerably more risqué that you realised. 'Oh, they aren't trousers, they're skin... Oh, that armour is actually a corset in the shape of a half naked tortured person... Oh, he's got a bell hanging in front of his... *cough, cough*' lol
Oo-er, missus! They certainly have a strong sense of narrative!
Here's the back view. Excuse the thong! lol

Pustules and skin tone, very good. Yes this figure is great, wonderful mini and great job painting.
-
Yeah, that's a really classic champion figure - great paintwork on it!
-
Painted the first of my classic metal Chaos champions.
Wow! Great job. He's one of my all-time favorite champions. I have two, and I have never painted them. Was waiting until I got good enough I guess!
-
Great figure and a worthy paintjob!
-
You can't keep a good project down! And so I return to you now, at the turn of the tide...
No, wait. Wrong Wizard.
This one is from Zealot Miniatures, and I've painted him in the classic HeroQuest Wizard colours. He's older and wiser, but still looking for Morcar lol
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50962914896_8e18f5fbc6_z.jpg)
-
Fantastic work on those chaos warriors
-
Great paintjob. I especially like the FH stars and moon, and how the staff turns silver/icy towards its tip.
-
Yeah, that looks...absolutely fantastic.
-
Wow, awesome!
-
I've painted him in the classic HeroQuest Wizard colours. He's older and wiser, but still looking for Morcar
This is a lovely idea, perfect choice of model and an unrivaled paintjob - excellent work all around, Sir!
-
Many thanks you guys. I've been struggling to find a Wizard that I really like for this project, but that Zealot kickstarter guy really does the trick.
-
Been busy of late, and finally got some paint on that Pit Fighter conversion I showed pages ago...
This is a Warhammer Underworlds model, with a flail taken from a plastic Empire Flagellant, and a head from an old late-90s Chaos Marauder. The chain on that flail is a little chonky, but otherwise I think he's a good substitute. Mind you, he is gigantic! Talk about scale creep in the newer GW figures...
EDIT: For reference, he's the only one of my heroes on a 30mm base instead of 25mm. GIGANTOR!

Great work, heck yes. Nice conversion/paintjob.
-
Let's get back to those Chaos champions, shall we?
The Khorne Flesh Hound mutant champion was always one of my faves - although in hindsight he does kinda look more like a cat than a hound...
Took a while to find a shield I liked. This is from a slightly later plastic Chaos shield sprue.
-
I always thought that was some kind of Chaos Skaven champion? It clearly isn't because it has hooves of course, lol Cool miniature and great paintjob as always.
-
That Pit Fighter conversion is genius!
-
I always thought that was some kind of Chaos Skaven champion? It clearly isn't because it has hooves of course, lol Cool miniature and great paintjob as always.
Yep, definitely a Khorne boi. You can tell by the fancy chin-frills. Nothing screams BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD quite like fancy chin-frills.
-
Clearly, someone has hit me over the head with a Nostalgia stick lately, because I just can't stop... lol
Behold, this Talisman Chaos Sorcerer, who is somehow simultaneously awful *and* lovely.
-
Lovely work on the Plastic fantastic Chaos Sorcerer!
There's something really pleasing about painting the old monopose plastics.
-
So, I promised myself no more elves. I don't even like Elves all that much AND I've still got a bunch of Chaos Champions left to paint. But then I went rummaging around in the attic, and I found this guy. An original Scarloc. He was cleaned up and primed, just like I left him... oo... 21 years ago lol
I felt struck by inspiration, and painted him immediately! Super quick paint job (for me) - mean and moody, like an Elf Ranger should be.
Obligatory rear view (phwoar! Look at that quiver!)

-
Nice colour palette, I like that old model. I really should repaint mine!
-
Great job on the gems and the quiver. I've got to get on my grey mountain as well.
-
Oh yeah, that elf is great...and I'm normally not much for elves!
-
A slightly different sort of update for the thread. Aaaaaages ago I posted some pics of my Mantic and Zealot dungeon furniture. Well, I've finally got some painted. Hoorah!
There's not a huge amount of scope for furniture in WHQ, beyond 3D objective markers. But I plan on using it both for photo backdrops, and for some openworld dungeon skirmish such as the Elder Scrolls, and the forthcoming Lasting Tales game. http://kck.st/3cynzfJ
First up: Cupboards and bookcases. Exciting huh!? These are from Mantic's terrain crate.
Ubiquitous treasure chests. I have a few more than this, but it gets a bit samey... lol These are a mix of Zealot Miniatures, Mantic, and CMON from the Zombicide Black Plague upgrade set. the Zealot ones are the most expensive, but are by far the best in detail and casting. The big pile of chests in the second photo is from Mantic - makes a great objective marker.

If you've got treasure chests, stands to reason you'd have a treasure chest Mimic... (Zealot minis)
And big piles of loose treasure for the Dragon to guard (Mantic):
Some debris and barricades (Mantic):
A fancy throne fit for a Liche King (Zealot), and a table from Mantic:
And finally, not the best photo in the world, but I've been playing around with scenic shots.
-
Two updates in swift succession. I must be ailing for something... o_o
Managed to finish off the third of my classic Chaos Champions. This time, a faceless champion of Tzeentch. Really quick and fun model to paint - I made good use of inks and glazes made from GW contrast paints to get the colour tint on the armour, and washes of that weird Nihilakh Oxide technical paint on the mask and mace.
And from the back:
-
Now that is sweet👍🏼
-
lovely painting
-
Who needs a face when you look that good? Great work, as always.
-
What a creepy dude. The glazes on the metal skirt add a really nice touch.
-
After a long hiatus from painting due to house renovations (which I consider just scenery-building on a larger scale), I finally got some more bits and pieces of furniture and such painted. Alternate colour scheme for the original doors, plus a bunch of Mantic and Zealot scenery.

The orrery (probably spelling that wrong...). On close inspection, the sculptor has clearly designed the big 'planet' in the middle as a Death Star, so I painted it up as such. The planets are Tatooine and Alderaan (plus Alderaan's moon). It amused me anyway lol
And every good adventure starts with a staircase...

Man...I love this thread.

Man...I love this thread.
Always feel slightly guilty when I resurrect it, but it's a lifelong project... I don't think it'll ever truly be finished lol
-
Continuing to deliver the good stuff :)
I really have come to enjoy scatter terrain and extra details on the periphery, excellent job on yours.
-
Always feel slightly guilty when I resurrect it, but it's a lifelong project... I don't think it'll ever truly be finished lol
Not at all, feel free to add to it when you get the chance.
-
Time for an update - and this time with an evil theme...
I've just finished my classic Nurgle champion. I was looking for this guy on eBay for a while, and was very happy when I finally got him for a low price. This completes my first set of 4 champions - I plan to do 4 more so I'll have 2 of each power.
Also completed, a bit more dungeon scenery just for fun. This is a sacrificial altar from Zealot miniatures - perfect for those Chaos cultists...
-
Thought I'd put all 4 together. Now I'm going to have to rephotograph them because the Nurgle Boi isn't on the same background as the others and it's gonna bug me forever... lol
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51383734637_1f9b561be1_z.jpg)
-
Brilliant painting there. Really like the one eyed dude and the blue on the hoody…
-
Lovely job on the altar and the nurgle fella. Never even seen that one before.
-
One of my favourite chaos champions, great job.
-
Lots to love in this thread, brilliant brushwork!
-
Lovely job, great brushwork!
-
I bring to you the semi-regular raising from the dead of this ongoing (probably lifelong) thread...
I've been working on a couple of larger models for my higher-level dungeoneers to battle. Just finished the first of these today. So, I give you: the Griffon!
I absolutely love classic metal models, and of the old Citadel monsters this particular Griffon is probably my favourite. This is 'Stormwing', the War-Griffon of Eltharion, sculpted by Trish Morrison (now Trish Carden on various social media). I was contemplating swapping his wings with something a bit more modern and dynamic, but they're so difficult to join that it would have meant more feather-sculpting than I'm comfortable with. So instead I carefully bent the original wings to give them a nice, natural curve. I'm pleased with the result - this is very much a benefit of metal models!
Colour scheme, I went for a traditional golden eagle and lion combo rather than the various fancy leopards and tigers beloved of GW. The golden eagle has quite a muted palette, and I used loads of photo reference for the wings.
Wing underside.

Wing top-down. Note the white is brighter, with no striping on the feathers.

Extreme close-up!
-
fantastic griffon :-*
love the chaos champions' paintwork.
-
That looks really awesome! Im planning something similar for my wifes griffon, but I cant hope to get near Your work...
-
Great detail work mate, your griffon looks brilliant.
-
Nice painting on that.
-
Superb griffon. Endlessly jealous of people who can paint things with fur and feathers. My arch-nemesis :D
-
Thanks guys, much appreciated - the Griffon seems to be a crowd pleaser :D
Currently working on an even bigger model, to rival the Mantic Dragon, but progress on these big guys is slow!
-
+1 likes on that Griffon. I think the lion + golden eagle combo is good. Keeps it simple. I do like griffons myself, I've ended up owning a few. Something great about wings on a lion with an eagle head.
-
Agreed on the gryphon. Going to have to keep that colour scheme in mind if I manage to get my hands on one.
-
Wonderful painting on the griffon.
-
I managed to squeeze in one last model before the end of the year, and it's the big fella I've been talking about for ages: the Warhammer Giant!
This model has been on my painting desk, assembled and undercoated, for about 15 years. It's even moved house with me! And finally, after starting and stopping several times over many months, he's done: ready to hit barbarians with clubs, throw Elves across the room, and stuff halflings down his trousers...

Face closeup:

Couldn't resist a couple of childish visual gags. The halflings in his knapsack are painted in the colours of Merry, Pippin and Frodo. Meanwhile, his loincloth is made from a flag of the Moot (yes, it's the Fighting Cock...)

Happy New Year to all!
-
Bursting with character mate!
-
Fantasticly painted model.
I really love the little touch on the *cough* rooster. lol
Just the kind of detail my juvenile mind can appreciate.
-
Nice job on that.
-
Love the freehand and the allusion to the Hobbits. Really like the skintone, too.
-
Fantasticly painted model.

lol indeed!
Really good work :)
-
Lovely work on the giant and his...loincloth.
-
Threadomancy again - the project lives! ;D
I've been tinkering away on a couple of character models lately. First one to get finished is a new hero: the Ex-Blood Bowl Player!
I saw the new (ish) Imperial Nobility team, and just had to have this one particular model. The idea is that Fitz is a huge bear of a man from Middenland (and therefore the ridiculous scale creep of newer GW figures doesn't really matter), and he's a celebrated hero in his village due to his glory days in the Blood Bowl league. When the call to adventure comes, he dons his old kit - now far too small for him, as he's grown fat on the accolades of the villagers - and set out to protect the village from the denizens of the deep.

And the rearview (dat ass tho...)

Two models in one week? INCONCEIVABLE!
A baddie this time - a Chaos Lord of Nurgle from a recent Knightmare Miniatures Kickstarter. Really tall fella, so he's going to tower over his underlings.
-
Great work. That is an intimidating foe!
-
Lovely painting :-*
-
Great stuff 8)
-
A nice collection. I like the little background stories... :)
-
Threadomancy!
Seems like every other post I make on this thread resurrects it from the dead. But this time I played a bunch of games of Warhammer Quest over the Christmas break (and Advanced Heroquest, as it happens), and it got me all fired up to paint some more minis.
I've had this guy in storage for something like 24 years, so it was therapeutic to finally get paint on it. Annoyingly, I took him out of the box in the loft, and the original shield fell out, and went between the cracks in the insultation boards. No chance of getting it back. Luckily, I found an old box of plastic Bretonnian knights, complete with waterslide transfers, which saved the day! (Yes, 20-year-old decals still work...)

Wow, All so nice. echo the love of the giant and his loincloth design. lol

Bright knight! Bright knight! :D
A lovely nineties paintjob that really brings out the model; great work again!
-
Wow, All so nice. echo the love of the giant and his loincloth design. lol
I know, I'm such a child lol
-
So after a long period of silence, it's a double update this week. Emperor's Bones!
I knew that eventually I'd have to paint 6 more close-combat skeletons, but to be honest I find skellies quite tedious to paint, so I've put them off for years! Anyway, I got my hands on some of these lovely Warhammer Underworlds undead, and decided this was just the inspiration I needed. Lovely, unique poses, and I can use them for multiple games (at the current count, Warhammer Quest, Advanced Heroquest, Underworlds, and Lasting Tales). I love multi-use models...
The Skeleton Champion is a lovely model. Here's a close-up ... Although I only noticed he was slightly out of focus after uploading. Doh!
-
Great work! Yeah, that particular skeleton box was excellent, particularly when it was $20, lol. Great sculpts. I use them in my dungeon crawl as well.
-
Great work on those skellies!
-
Those are really nice. Very vivid colors.
-
Time for another hero!
So this is Chaos lord from Hasslefree Miniatures. I wasn't sure whether to paint him up as one of my Chaos Warrior baddies, or as the Chaos Warrior Hero alternative... so I figured why not both? I'll be honest, I always found the idea of a Chaos Warrior as a hero a bit weird. I figure he's just a northman who's taken things a bit far (I mean, what is the Barbarian in Warhammer Quest if not a Chaos Marauder with fewer scars? lol)
A bit of rebasing so he matches the rest of the collection, and he's good to go.
Took a few photos of this one - he doesn't really have a perfect angle to get everything in focus.

Obviously the mark of a 'hero' is a cloak made of mouldering old flayed skin...
-
Great painting! He does remind me of Militron in one of the older Legend of Zelda games.
-
Nice model with a great paint job! 8)
It should fit in just seamlessly with GW Chaos Warriors...
-
Lovely work! Good thing you had those spare shields, eh?
-
Great work!
He does seem quite "heroic" in a way, but it is strange how he wears his cloak with the fur on the inside, skin out!
-
That's because of his grafitti; doesn't look half as good on fur... :D
-
lovely painting!
-
Lovely work! Good thing you had those spare shields, eh?
The shields saga is driving me nuts. Years ago I had a little bag with about 10 of those shields (probably worth their weight in gold now). The idea was to use them for a unit of very bling knights, but I never got round to it. Now I've been through every box in the loft five times and those shields are nowhere to be seen. So yes - plastic shields and decals to the rescue! (Quite pleased actually that one of the decals matched the knight's heraldry).
-
Another update. Say whaaaat!?
On my to-do list for ages has been to paint up some alternative female models for each of the principle heroes. I've been searching for suitable models, and finally made a start with the Barbarian.
Disclaimer: I normally hate chainmail bikini models with a passion. But this came as part of a Kickstarter from Knightmare Miniatures, and this Boris Woloszyn sculpt was just so nice that I had to paint it. Properly old skool, and I think she'll make a great addition to the collection.
I have a female Elf on my painting table right now, but I'm also in the process of painting up some more monsters, so we'll see what gets done first as I flit endlessly between projects lol
-
She is lovely - do like the Hyborian feel.
-
Chaos hero is ace! Bloody good model! But you’re right chainmail bikini chic is also pretty cool!
Top notch painting on both!
-
She looks like she stepped straight off the cover of a 1980s Dragon magazine! Totally takes me back to my mis-spent youth!
I like what you did with that figure. Your painting is excellent and she will fit right into the lineup for the game!
-
Excellent work!

I couldn't pass up on that Kickstarter either, very cool minis.
-
Vedry cool. The flayed skin cloak is exceptional

Yes, but when they are properly proportioned and tastefully done they can be a thing of beauty. You did this model justice.
-
Very striking painting.

It's a rare thing that I paint up an Oldhammer model and don't enjoy it. But this beaky guy was a royal PITA. Slightly miscast, and with what I suspect may be a tiny bit of lead rot that I noticed after stripping the old paint, he was a real chore. Even the flying stand snapped while I was varnishing, meaning I had to do more touch-ups after the repair. Truly, a cursed model! But never mind - I now have the two Chaos Sorcerers I need, one on foot and one on disc, so I can get back to my beloved undead!
-
Love that model!
-
My favourite sorceror from that era; he features prominently in my Tzeentch-themed Warriors of Chaos army.
And sometimes miniatures are just like that; they're more individual than we think, even when they're casts of the same sculpt. I had a great time painting up my first RT era Dreadnought years ago. But when I did up another one last year, it was as if the model fought me every step of the way. I finished him, but for some reason there was loads less enjoyment than with the previous one, plus there were and all kinds of mishaps along the way. And they were exactly the same model!
Your sorceror came out looking great though, regardless of his resistance. The yellow is perfectly offset by the purple and blue 8)
-
Very cool. That one's on my "must get but will never get around to" list. Love the colour choices.
-
I love the flesh tones on that barbarian, awesome.
-
Even if painting him was a pain in the a.. as you said, the disc rider came out great! Lovely and weird model!
-
Older models can be a pain in the apiary, but you did a great job on it!

This is gorgeous, lovely use of colour. Really dig your painting style
-
When the thread is so old that LAF gives you a warning about threadomancy. Again. lol
BUT: I've only gone and started painting more Warhammer Quest minis. Even had a game. An actual game! And for that game, I discovered that I'd completely forgotten to paint any Ghouls, so that's what I did first.
I purchased a bunch of the newer plastic GW ghouls a few years ago, but when I came to paint them I just didn't like them as much as the old metal ones. So I found 12 in the attic that were part of my old Vampire Counts army, stripped them, and repainted them. (And now that I've taken photos, I realise they need touch-ups. Dammit!)

Six down, six more to go.

They do look very good though. In terms of threadomancy, it means I got to see that cracking Tzeentch champion again, great colours on that!
-
Lovely!
-

Cheers! He still gives me flashbacks. And I've just finished another really old model that was also a pain to paint. Sometimes this project throws curveballs, but it's a labour of love!
-
The varnish has just dried on the next model.
As I was saying in a previous post, this one was also a PITA to paint - I've always wanted to paint the classic Teclis model, but never felt like my skills were quite up to the task. Tbh, I still don't, because the finicky details + amount of freehand required are seriously 'extra'. But I gave it my best shot, and finally finished him.
In terms of Warhammer Quest, I figured it was a bit unfair that the Wizard should always be human, and because I painted so many elves already (by accident - I don't even like elves!), I wanted a Wizard for an all-elf adventuring party. There isn't really a more impressive/OTT wizard model from the golden era of Warhammer, so Teclis was the natural choice.
I'm going to try a dungeon with four elf characters: "Elf" (the OG, with the most original name ever), Elf Ranger, Wardancer, and Wizard. Wish me luck!

-
For someone who doesn’t like elves, you did a great job on that one! I especially like the painted on details, such as the stars on the cloak. Beautiful work.
-
As for the ghouls, I was going to use Paul Muller's originally, mixed with a few old metal GW; but while I was up in the loft I found 3 boxes of unassembled GW plastics that I hoarded and totally forgot about, so it looks like I'll be using those! lol
Quoting myself here, because apparently earlier in this thread I made the decision to ditch the metal ghouls in favour of plastics back in 2015! Fast forward 9 years, I finally got round to them, and clearly changed my mind lol lol
-

Many thanks!
I find elves - especially high elves - to be the most annoying and effete of all the fantasy races. So it's galling that they have some of the most beautiful miniatures that I just find myself drawn to lol I still have the "Lord of Aenarion" warrior to paint, although I'm yet to source the ideal miniature for it. (It's one of the later "specialist games" rules packs with no official model).
-
Ruh-roh... I've got quite a few minis lined up on my painting table right now, but I just found a big bag of Chaos Dwarfs, and the urge to paint them is STRONG!
-
If you are blessed with a big bag of chaos dwarfs it's less an urge than a duty lol
-
Great job on Teclis, and a great find in that bag of Big Hats.
-
Okay, I'm resisting the Big Hats for a little while at least (although I might* have ordered some 3D printed Bull Centaurs from Etsy...). Work continues to finish all the half-painted stuff on my desk first.
(* I totally did.)
Here's a monster! None other than the fearsome DEATH CHICKEN! lol
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53524574663_c64d840f68_z.jpg)
I'd been looking for a good dungeon-sized Cockatrice for a while. I considered the ye olde Marauder mini, but it really was small and chicken-like. Otherworld minis made one, that's very nice and old-skool, but still a bit small considering its impressive statline in the game. Then GW made a super-cool new model a few years ago, and went completely the other way, making it way too big for the purposes of Warhammer Quest (equal in size to a big griffon or small dragon).
Anyhow, I remembered that the Massive Darkness boardgame had a "cockatrix" in the stretch goals box. Now, I really didn't get on with that game, and sold pretty much everything from the Kickstarter, but this model remained, and I think it's the perfect balance between size and ferociousness for Warhammer Quest. It was a bit tricky to clean up and paint, being CMON boardgame plastic, but I'm happy enough with how it turned out. Once it got mounted on a Fenris Games base to match the rest of the collection, it instantly began to look more the part.
Now, onwards to the painting pile!
-
Looks gorgeous! Wouldn’t want to meet them in a dark alley! lol
-
Agreed, lovely work on that, and I wouldn't even want to meet one in a brightly lit alley lol
-
That's great. I have the same model, but you went bolder with the colour scheme and it is all the better for it (and your painting is better than mine!). Excellent work.
-
Cracking painting.
-
I have that chicken as well! Mine was sourced either on Ebay or here in the bazaar. I had no immediate use for it, but I remember really liking the design and picking it up. I occasionally encounter it when exploring the Lead Mountain, but so far it has eluded the brush... ::)
You did a great paintjob on yours though; nice and garish, just as I imagine such a monstrosity to look :)
-
Thanks all for your kind comments about the Death Chicken. I'm sure she'll have a long and glorious career of petrifying adventurers.
Speaking of adventurers, the latest half-done model to finally get finished is my Kislevite Shaman. Actually an old metal Amber Wizard, stripped and repainted.
Next up on the bench is a female dwarf, some more Chaos Champions, then I really should get the rest of the Ghouls done. But the Chaos Dwarfs are calling to me lol
-
Beautiful work on the shaman!
-
I agree that shaman is fantastic. All of it is.
-
Still on my mission of "finishing off things that have been in progress for months and months... lol
Another of my female versions of the core box heroes. This time a classic Dwarf Queen Helga miniature to use as the Dwarf Warrior.
Came out a little bit dark for me. Mind you, some of that is because her eyebrows are so massive they've completely shaded out her eyes under the camera lighting!
Just got a couple of Chaos Champions to finish off, then I'm going to start something new, which will probably take me an age. I've got Chaos Dwarfs at the ready, the last of the metal Ghouls, and yet another bloody elf! ;D
-
That gem is delightfully shiny! Nice work!
-
That gem is delightfully shiny! Nice work!
Thanks! I honestly love painting gemstones - they're my favourite part of these classic models.
I've noticed in recent years that there's been a change in the accepted method of how the top painters do gems (the big Youtubers, especially). But I still follow the tried and tested, 1990s Mike McVey method, with a bit of gloss varnish at the end, and I doubt I'll ever change.
-
A lovely little lady indeed! :-*
-
Another Chaos champion done (cor, a flurry of activity on the painting table just lately!)
I wasn't quite sure which Chaos God this guy worshipped at first - he seems to come from the age of "Chaos in all its forms" miniatures. Despite his sylph-like figure, I settled on Khorne, due to the bones and massive sword.
I really like this old mini, despite it being another of the "Why are all the edges rounded?" brigade.

I've got a 1996 Citadel catalogue that lists it as code 8527D "Champions of Tzeentch", but I believe the model was first produced a bit earlier, late 1980s, so maybe the 1996 designation is just a rename. The metal slot on its base just says "Chaos Champion". Could definitely pass as Khorney (!), and that's a very nice paintjob you've got on it.
-

Interesting. Definitely not getting Tzeentch vibes from it, but back then the lines were much more blurred.
-
It is indeed shown as a Tzeentch champion exactly as stated above.
-
Well now I've got the urge to repaint him...
-
This thread is absolutely jam-packed with beautiful minis. Excellent work!
Regarding the champion; in ’89 it was listed as champion of Khorne. Maybe Tzeentch offered better fringe benefits? :D

Ha! Look at that! Honestly, I thought this fellow's horns/crest (?) looked at least vaguely like Khorne's rune, not to mention all the bones, so I was surprised when I saw it listed in my '96 catalogue as a champion of Tzeentch.

Phew! My existential crisis about repainting is now over. If even GW got mixed up, I can take my pick lol
-
Anyway, this latest one is definitely Tzeentch!
He'll serve dual purpose in the game as a Tzeentch Champion, or a Sorcerer on foot. In his Sorcerer role, he'll have a little familiar (no in-game effect in WHQ, but I guess I can use him as a spell effect token if needed).

Both together. ("This way, tiny scrollbearer!")

Very nice! That moon-face guy is one of my favorites from that era of Citadel miniatures (J. Goodwin sculpt?), and I painted it in much the same color scheme as yours, and put him on one of those flying discs.
-
Yeah I'd say it's a safe bet ol' craterface is a tzeench guy! lol lol
Great work!
-
I’ve work on “Old Six Fingers” there. Nice model, right up there with all the classic Chaos models. You’ve done him justice! 8)
-
Thanks for the kind words everyone. I tip my pointy hood at you all.
So oddly, I was just packing away my figures after a game, and I realised there's a (fairly) recent model that I don't believe I've photographed for the project log. He's one of my absolute favourites though, so I've quickly rectified the situation.
Presenting, the Dread King himself, and the Grimoire Necris!
Some of you may recall that I purchased an Otherworld Minis Liche ages and ages ago to fill this role. Unfortunately, just as I was about to paint it, his staff snapped off, and it was the fiddliest bit of metal ever, and even my 0.3mm drill bit couldn't fix it. So I rooted around in the attic and couldn't believe my luck that I had all the pieces to build this absolute classic miniature from Catacombs of Terror. With the exception of his slightly goofy feet in the air because he's too short for his throne, I love him!
Anyhoo, time for your close-up, Dr. Phibes:

Perfect job. Great mini.
-
Wow, that’s really amazing! I like his eye, and that book is top notch.
-
Incredible! :-* :-* :-*
-
Great detail on the writing in the grimoire.
-
Ooh, that book is lovely, as is his eye!
And honestly, having his feet off the ground just works, like he's in the middle of an evil rant.
-
I believe someone ordered the hats, extra large, with a side of tusks and ringlets?
Yep, the Chaos Dwarfs are here! (D6+2 of them, if you like Warhammer Quest). Couple of metal guys close-up:
And some of my favourite one-piece plastics. Real charm to these little guys.

-
Awwwww yeah, superb!
-
All hail metalheads! lol Beautiful job!
-
Looking great!
-
Wonderfully crisp paint jobs! You really pulled out their charm.
-
Motoring along with the project at the moment, because I'm planning a shiny new campaign! I'm going all-in this time - just spent a small fortune on custom printed cards from Makeplayingcards, and currently printing and pasting some custom board sections. Hoo boy, I'm in too deep.
Speaking of spending a small fortune, have you guys seen the price of bull centaurs on ebay these days? Sheesh! I simply couldn't justify the cost, so I went to Etsy and ordered some 3D-printed proxies, sculpted by Fabelzel. Honestly, it felt a bit dirty and wrong lol, and the minis aren't actually as good as the originals: but hey, they're done, and that counts for something right?!
Next up, six more ghouls to finish off my set of 12, and a new hero or two.
-
I really like most of the Fabelzel stuff. He did a good job sculpting them, and it's not as if you're buying some shady resin re-casts. The 'old' Chaos Dwarf army has been dead for 25+ years.
-

Yeah, it's not so much the "copyright" issues, given the game's age, but more that they aren't the "perfect" mini, so they sort of break my first principles of the project. But what they do really well is capture the character and essence of the originals, so I have no regrets, and it brings me one step closer to completing my Level 2 monster roster!
-
Oh no, I've allowed myself to get distracted by Ogres! o_o
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53682448755_72d36d1aae_z.jpg)
-
Is that Golgfag from the Dogs of War unit?
-
Is that Golgfag from the Dogs of War unit?
Yes indeed! Found a bag with five Golgfag's Ogres models, hence the immediate distraction :D
-
Nice! I am debating doing a Dogs of War styled army for my game...as there are now plenty of suitable plastics and 3D prints to recreate the style.
-
As I'm assembling a bunch of Ogres, figured I might as well prep the old Mordheim Ogre as well. I've been saving this guy for AGES to use as the [slightly unofficial] Ogre Hero for Warhammer Quest.
One thing that these models always ram home is just what a pain it was to assemble large metal models. So much clipping, filing and gap filling. For Golgfag's ogres in particular, my Dremel was pretty much essential to get a good fit on the shoulder sockets. How did we used to manage this back when we were kids and hand-held power rotary tools were a pipedream? lol
(Cue dewy-eyed flashback scene. "Ee, when I were a lad...")
-
If my experience is any indication, we stuck them together with cheap crazy glue, didn’t bother to fill an gaps (because I had no idea miliput existed), painted them with enamels, and hoped (usually futilely) that the parts would stay together…
I quickly started buying 1-piece models whenever I could and proxied them for the multi-part kits. They usually weren’t as dynamic, but they didn’t fall apart in a stiff breeze either.
-
Oh aye, them was the days lol
-

When I was 15-ish, way back when, and I had a few random Rogue Trader minis and Warhammer 4th edition monsters, the only hobby tool I had was a Stanley knife, and I filled gaps with either blu-tack and superglue, or a blob of PVA glue that I allowed to partly set. Somehow we managed!
-
My younger friends always ask why I like metals...but I have to explain "I like single piece metal miniatures...". Multi-part metals can pound sand. lol
(remembers War Walkers and Eldar Dreadnoughts at age 12 before I had/knew tools to pin)
-
I mentioned the other day that I'm putting together custom board sections and having a load of cards printed. Well, work is progressing quickly now. I have over 30 new board sections already, and I'm really happy with how they've turned out.
I sourced the scans from all over the interwebs, but the real gems for me were the tiles from Eastern Empire (https://www.eastern-empire.com/warhammer-quest-tiles/ (https://www.eastern-empire.com/warhammer-quest-tiles/)), plus the scans from the (sadly now defunct) Beyond the Grey Mountains site. I had all these printed onto A0 posters, which was surprisingly cheap. Then my process is as follows:
- Stick the tiles to 1500-micron (1.5mm thick) mount board, using a glue stick (like the stuff you use in school). This is important: regular glue will warp the card and bubble the paper, so the glue stick is essential. Also, most YouTube vids and websites recommend 2mm thick card. Don't do this! If you're using the original plastic WHQ doors, the card will be too thick to slot under them.
- Trim with a safety ruler and box cutter. This process eats through blades, so a box cutter (those disposable things with the snap-off blades) is the most economical way to do this, with the cleanest cuts. I started with my usual hobby scalpel, and was getting through a new blade every tile!
- If there are any minor wrinkles around the edges, gently buff these out with 120-grit sandpaper, in downward strokes. Then go around the edges with a black marker to tidy these up.
- Cover the whole thing in sticky-back plastic film. I use one of those foam-edged film applicators to help here, to really rub down on the film and get out as many air bubbles as possible. If you don't do this, the film won't be quite as transparent as it should be, and there's no way to go back and fix this once it's fully stuck.
So there you go - you can have the benefit of my mistakes lol

Funniest part of this project for me. Years ago I had the original "Pits and Traps" expansion, which was essentially three pieces of card and a 4-page, A4 booklet. I scanned it all, then listed the original (used) on ebay for a £10 starting price. Some crazy guy bought it for over £100 (and these days they go for even more o_o). But now, with the power of paper-crafting, I have a set that looks almost identical to the original, for less than a tenner...
That Eastern Empire site has a full set of Advanced Heroquest boards, resized and retouched for WHQ. I've ordered a set of dungeon cards to go along with it, so I can run it either as a self-contained quest, or mix a few of the tiles into the regular game.
-
Such a relatively simple process and they came out looking great.
-
Aaaand... we're back.
The ogres are now underway, but they aren't urgent for the actual campaign I'm running, so in-between layers on the big guys I'm working as quickly as possible filling in the gaps in the Monster Tables and the official expansions.
First up, from Lair of the Orc Lord, we have Gubbinz the Goblin Jester. Super-fun model to paint, just a delightfully old-skool sculpt with very crisp details.
And Gubbinz is ably assisted by Bogoff the Snotling with his stolen lantern. This little guy is quite possibly the most annoying character in the history of dungeon-crawl board games, which means he's an absolute gem in Warhammer Quest. lol

And finally, six more Ghouls! These guys don't deserve their own post, because they're almost identical to the previous six Ghouls I painted. But hey, this is a project log, so for the purposes of completeness here they are.

Love this! Bogoff got his name from me shouting at the dog we had at the time I was writing and playtesting this! Great paint job!

Dean Bass? Welcome, an honour to have you on the thread. LOTOL is such a blast!
-
Cheers mate, great thread!
-
And now for some terrifying SQUIGGLY BEASTS! :D
These classic Squig Herders and their (slightly newer) Squigs were great fun to paint. I've started putting together a few more Squigs to use as "wild" cave Squigs, too.

Such delightful squigs! They'll be sure to cause trouble in the dungeons.
-
Squigs are definitely some of the most fun minis GW ever produced. You've done a great job on them.
-
Love the squigs! They look so twisted yet adorable at the same time, just perfect :-*
-
And the best thread keeps getting better. They look great.
I tip my jester's hat to you, good sir.

I return to show you the first part of my Ogre Odyssey. No, not a prog rock album, but actual Ogres.
Like all large, multi-part metal miniatures, these are taking far too long to assemble and paint. The first one I've managed to complete is an Ogre hero, to join the adventuring party! I used the Mordheim mercenary ogre for this, as I've always loved the model. Every party needs a tank, and they don't come much tankier than this brute.

Not such a great picture, but I've tried to snap the details of his backpack, which include a captured halfling and a Skaven. Baddies who he's rounded up for the bounty? Or adventuring supplies in case he gets hungry? You decide!

Nice work on that classic fella!
-
I love that figure, and your painting is really great! I admire the way you paint the hair on his arms, never could do anything that good.
-

I'm just glad he's wearing his shirt, so I didn't have to paint his back... lol
-
And here we go! Finally completed the Ogre trio (that's D3 Ogres for you rulesy guys). All mounted on 30mm Fenris Games bases so they can occupy one square on a standard WHQ board.
A few detail shots below, starting with the main dude, Golgfag himself. Unbelievably, when I went outside to varnish the Ogres, Golgfag took a tumble onto the concrete. Both of his arms broke off, and he took some light chipping, so I had to spend time re-pinning and repainting certain areas, like the horns, which was a royal PITA!
Figured his coat was made from some kind of leathery reptile hide, or maybe even orc-hide.

Cracking work, as always :-*
-
Excellent job on those, they all look great! I like the details you painted in, too, like the stripes on the third fellow’s pants.
-
Thank you guys! The ogres took ages, but I'm happy with them.
A bonus update now, and breaking my rules somewhat because I rushed it a bit. I have a game tonight, and want to make sure I've got as big a variety of warriors as possible to choose from, and that means getting YET ANOTHER BLOODY ELF PAINTED! >:( lol
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53827733609_8e06ac3824_z.jpg)
So this is the closest I've come to "speed-painting" on this entire project. I squeezed it in over the weekend, so just over 4 hours in total, not my best work but I managed to keep it neat and fairly on point. Might go back and touch up later. Anyhow, the High Elf Ranger is a lovely old Jes Goodwin sculpt, and one of the most interesting game options in Warhammer Quest, so I can't wait to finally see how he plays. I'll try to remember to take some pics of the game!
-
"Speed-painted" or not, that's nice work there. I probably spent a similar amount of time on that very same miniature, with far less impressive results.
-
I agree with DalyDR, that’s excellent work. I think most folks would be putting that at the front of the display cabinet (myself included)!
-
That's a great Elf. My buddy picked up that character back in high school when we played Warhammer Quest and I remember him being...far better than my Trollslayer (which inevitably died whenever my buddies fled the dungeon...). lol
-

*almost* speed-painted, by my notoriously slow standards lol
Combination of deteriorating eyesight and being incapable of saying "that's enough" means I just take longer than necessary over every figure. 'Tis a curse.
-
I only remembered to take photos right at the end... typical!
So we were very lucky with the first game. We got two T-Junctions right out the gate, and miraculously chose the correct path at the first time of asking, making the route very short. Then, when we rolled to see what monsters were present, we rolled a 6 and just got a load of gobbos and Snotlings lol
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53830192594_e1a0694d8e_z.jpg)
Despite labouring over that Elf Ranger, we decided not to take him, naturally! So the party composition ended up being a very weird Imperial Noble/ Trollslayer/ Wizard/ Ogre combo. And a good job we didn't get anything tougher in the Objective Room, because we failed to draw a single magic weapon or armour card during the game, meaning we were very basic level 1 warriors right to the end. A Minotaur would have absolutely crushed us lol
What I will note is, although this project has been years in the making, the few times we do get to play make it all worthwhile. There's nothing like playing a game with a fully painted set (this applies to every type of game in this mad hobby of ours, from Napoleonics to skirmish and everything in-between). As one of our players said last night, "the best part of the hobby is that bit at the start when you line up your painted army, ready to start the game." And I think I agree!

Me too!
I was just about to sell off my Mordheim warbands (of which I have quite a few), when out of the blue someone started organising a campaign. Now, naturally I am not going to use any of them, instead paint up a new gang, but still. Years in the making, but the few battles we have makes it all worthwhile.
And you have some very pretty models there!
-
BOING!!!
A few more monsters completed. I painted up three extra Squigs in different colours, to use as "Wild Cave Squigs" - this way I can differentiate them from the Squig Herder groups.
(One day I'll get all models in a group shot in focus, but I guess that day hasn't yet come... lol)
-
Those teeth are looking sharp!
-
Some more monsters for the dungeon! We have the second game of our campaign tonight, so I spent the weekend finishing off these classic Night Goblin Netters. Sculpts are bit goofy and knobbly to be honest, which made them a bit fiddly to paint, but they definitely have a certain charm.
I'll be shuffling them into the monster deck tonight, and then probably weep as they entangle the entire party for half the session lol

Full group of 6:

-
These Gobos look great indeed, well done!
-
Those Night Goblins look great
Even though my tastes tend to more "realistic" fantasy these days the Kev Adams style is always the default goblin for me
-
Fantastic. For some reason I see the netters as being great for catching squigs with those pics side by side.
-
Love the goblins... especially that guy on the right, who looks very pleased with himself lol
-
Lovely job! There's a lot of charm in those older sculpts, despite their fiddliness.
-
What a wonderful project. Howe Could I have missed it all these years.
-
Thank you guys - a lot of love for Kev Adams gobbos, as is only right and proper!
-
Next group of monsters for the dungeon: Beastmen!

Some of these old metal rank-and-file models are a real chore to batch paint (a reminder of why I don't paint armies anymore...). The Bestigor and the old Blood Bowl mutant beastmen are a lot nicer. Thankfully, Warhammer Quest makes no distinction between Beastman types, so I was able to just mix and match 12 from the pile.
-
Now, naturally I am not going to use any of them, instead paint up a new gang, but still.
Isn't that the way of things?? lol
-
Those look brilliant! So much individuality on those classic figures and your painting is excellent.
-
Those are pretty
-
Your level of painting continues to impress. Love those beastmen models and your painting on them (never thought that monopose plastic gor could be painted so well!) Marauder shields work excellently on them, too.
I've got some of those minis myself and was going to go with brownish skintones but the way you have painted them has given me second thoughts of maybe going with more pale colors.

Too kind!
Yes, I remember seeing the paler skintones many years ago, and always wanted to try it out. Honestly, it's not quite what I had in my mind's eye, but it turned out well enough. I think the base (Citadel Zandri Dust) was a good choice, and I used Vallejo Xpress "Bag o' Bones" to shade it. After that, I think maybe I went too light too quickly, but for basic gors I was just trying to get them ready for the game. I'm going to paint up a Bray Shaman and a Beastlord at some point, so I'll get another go at it, and probably include more transition mixes on those important characters,
-
"Turned out well enough"? That's a serious understatement righ there. If it's not too much of a hassle, could you take some close-up photos of your miniatures? Not just gors but any random assortment of stuff you've painted for this project, would be a treat to see the details on them. :P
Thanks for the skintones recipe, will have to save that and see if I can muster enough courage to try it out.
-
Excellent project and paintjob !!!
-

That's quite a big ask lol - I must be in the hundreds of minis for this project now... Check through the thread so far, and if there's anything in particular you'd like to see detail shots on, let me know and the next time I photograph a batch I'll happily take some.
-
Haha, sorry, meant to ask photos of some of them, not to task you into photographing every miniature in perfect detail, that would take a while as you said! o_o
Pretty tough choosing which I'd like to see the most, so how about photos of some of the miniatures you're most proud of yourself but have only shown as part of a group so far? As many or as few minis as you want to bother with, I'm not sending you on a quest (though this does have a characteristic of all sidequest; little to no xp to be gained as reward.) lol
-
Lovely bunch of man-cows, those are!
-
Thank you guys!
Because we currently have a campaign in progress, I've started painting more batches of monsters (usually in groups of 6 or 12, due to the Warhammer Quest rules). I'm not really one for batch-painting these days, so to keep things fresh, I'm jumping around different kinds of monsters wherever possible. So I've momentarily abandoned the Beastmen, and painted up a big group of Savage Orcs (or "orruks", as GW seems to call them these days, even though it sounds like cussing... lol). Really enjoyed these, what an absolute joy to paint! (Although my freehand on the tattoos is a bit shaky...) After many, many years of painting orcs, I've finally found a skin colour recipe I like!
First up, 6 orcs with hand weapons:

By request, I've taken some close-up shots of a few interesting features (I realise I don't like doing this so much, as it shows up all my mistakes, warts and all... lol)

Very nice painting!
-
Excellent painting. Thanks for the close-up pics, nice to see the details on these. :)
And you really are downplaying your freehands big time; they all look good but especially all those swirly mini-spirals and bones on one orc's leg look great.
-
What little shakiness I can see on the freehands just helps sell it as being more orky! Lovely job.
-
I was pretty pleased with those Savage Orcs, so I used the same scheme on this old skool Shaman from Lair of the Orc Lord.
Haven't done the tattoos... yet. I'm still pondering whether the model needs them or not.
-
Great work on that one - he's a classic. I don't think he needs tattoos, personally. Perhaps a simple magical swirl if you need one on there?
-
I agree with elbows, doesn't need tattoos. I never thought of him as a savage orc shaman myself. Very nice job. Love those knees extra detail like that makes things great.
-
Your brushwork is simply out of this world! Excellent updates.

Thank you! I'm really enjoying this foray into the world of greenskins, that's for sure. I have a bunch of Black Orcs and Squig Hoppers on my painting table next.
-
Such great work! I love the old Lair of the Orc Lord Shaman (Skabnoze, was it?)- and wow, you made it look like his knees have a bunch of dry skin and dirt on them- amazing! He should really get one of his underlings to whip up some green-skin cream or something. Love it!
-
Truly excellent work!
-
And we're back! With even more BOING! o_o
As much as I wanted to paint up the older metal Squig Hoppers for this project, I got hold of a frame of the new ones from GW and gave them a quick test fit... I was hooked. These minis are really great. They go together like a dream, and are super-fun to paint. The only problem is, I painted up 4 for a game, and only afterwards realised I needed 6 (or D6, because y'know, Warhammer Quest). Extra single frames are on their way from ebay, but for now, here's the first batch!

My painting table is swarming with minis at the moment, including a whole load of black orcs, so hopefully the next update won't be too far away. I've also broken my foot, so that gives me an excuse to sit still and paint! lol
-
Great work. I like that one looks excited, while the other looks scared. lol
-
They are very nice.
I just wish they still had the old Kev Adams head. I wonder if there is a place to purchase Kev Adams gobbo heads separately for conversion parts... time to google I think.
-
Ah, what a shame. Gotta paint more gobbos. lol
They look lovely, great work on those lads.
-
Great work. I like that one looks excited, while the other looks scared. lol
That's because one is da boss. He's learned to embrace his inner squig (and his outer one).
-
Great stuff mate. Get on with that painting or I’ll send some to break the other foot! lol
-
Great stuff mate. Get on with that painting or I’ll send some to break the other foot! lol
Yikes! Good job I've finished those Black Orcs! lol
Another bunch of classic metal models that were a PITA to paint, making a mockery of my rules of engagement (only paint models that I love). The story here is that, years ago when I actually started this project, I put out a call to a bunch of hobby buddies to help me fill out the gaps in the Warhammer Quest monster tables. I got some very generous donations, including a bunch of metal black orcs. Now, said friend had heavily 'battle damaged' these models with a dremel, probably way beyond my usual taste, making them actually quite tricky to paint due to their sharp edges and so on - hence why it's taken me so long to get round to them. However, not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, I added them to the handful that I already owned, and finally painted them up.
Not my best work, not the most fun, but 2D6 Black Orcs are ready to join the Orc Lord's lair...

And a few details of the iconography. Went for a battle-damaged look, pretty simple but helps break up all that armour.

-
They look a treat!
-
I agree, they look excellent! I wouldn’t have noticed any damage from the Dremel treatment if you hadn’t mentioned it - your paint work or maybe pre-painting cleanup, makes the figures look like they were designed to look just the way they are.
-
Last update from the current batch. Every mob of black orcs needs a Boss to keep 'em in line.
This mini was much nicer to paint than the rank-and-file orcs. He's actually one of my own that I converted up for a Warhammer army in days of yore, but never actually painted. A fairly quick paint job to match the other black orcs, but added a few extra stages of shading and highlights as befits his status.

Agreed; great stuff 8)
I especially like the dags and checkers on the black :)

With all the batch-painted monsters I've finished recently, I figured I deserved a new hero as a reward. This one took me a while, and he's been waiting for his finishing touches for ages. But finally: a new Dwarf Warrior!
This is the new anniversary Grombrindal mini from Games Workshop. Yes, I bought a very expensive miniature and chopped off his massive scenic base. But he's such a great figure, so no regrets!
Besides, I've painted so many elves for this project that the Dwarfs were getting annoyed with me...
A few details:
I tried to follow the White Dwarf painting guide for the cloak - I messed up the knotwork a little, so it came out just a bit too big. But that's the finest line I can paint with my eyesight these days, so I'm still pretty happy with it lol
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54028220505_b784b56938.jpg)
-
You should be happy, he looks great! The fact that you painted on the knot work at all put it a step above most figures. (At least the ones I’ve seen.)
-
Awesome.
Good job getting rid of the scenic base. Can't stand those things myself.
-
That's such a vast improvement over the comical 'scenic' base. Great work.
-
Continuing the Dwarf theme, I also painted up a brand new Warrior - the unofficial "Dwarf Goldhunter". I used another classic metal mini for this one - Krudd "Mad" Mattock from the old Grudge of Drong campaign pack. A lovely figure from my favourite era of Dwarfs, and another step towards counter-balancing all those pesky elves in my collection lol

"Pull my finger".

Beautiful work, as always. That black orc boss is just excellent - that head-swap, zig-zag pattern and scratches on armour work a treat.
Both new dwarfs are excellent as well. Do you mind sharing your paint scheme for Krudd Mattock's pickaxe handle? Every time I try to paint light wood colour it seems to end up a disaster and I just move to darker brown.

Both new dwarfs are excellent as well. Do you mind sharing your paint scheme for Krudd Mattock's pickaxe handle? Every time I try to paint light wood colour it seems to end up a disaster and I just move to darker brown.
Many thanks!
Whenever I paint light wood, I start with Citadel Zandri Dust (not too far removed from VMC Khaki, if you aren't using Citadel). I recently discovered a good shade for this is thinned down Skeleton Horde contrast paint (or Vallejo Xpress Bag o' Bones - I have both and use them interchangeably). Then go back to the base colour and add progressive amounts of a lighter shade: If you want to go warmer, add bone (which is what I did here). If you want to go more neutral, add Pallid Wych Flesh (Citadel) or Vallejo Deck Tan.
-
Just great painting on all of these. Congratulations!

Always nice seeing a few dwarves here and there. Lovely work on those knots!
-
They are very nice.
I just wish they still had the old Kev Adams head. I wonder if there is a place to purchase Kev Adams gobbo heads separately for conversion parts... time to google I think.
I used to have that for my renaissance goblin range sculpted by Kev. Unfortunately, it seems the current owner hasn't done anything with the range.
-
YOU SHALL NOT PASS! <ahem> Sorry, wrong franchise.
I painted up another alternative Wizard recently. Not because I need one, you understand, but because I found the model in an old stash of metal minis, and immediately got distracted as is my wont lol
I always loved the old Empire Battle Wizards, and I think this guy really stands up.

I considered painting some kind of fancy pattern on the cloak, but in the end those sharp creases really put me off trying. Decided on a simple, neat paint job instead.

Beautiful work on that wizard!
Interesting choices in your colour palette- the blue and white main colours are a great pairing (as thousands of high elves painted around the world demonstrate). The purple cloak and skullcap briefly gave me pause, but I think they work too, especially with the complementary yellow on the high collar, the inside of the cape, and trim on the tunic. Super smooth shadows and highlights, too.

Thank you! And good observation: I took a while planning this miniature, because there was maybe one area too many for my liking that needed to be a distinct colour. I was torn between dark blue or purple for the cloak, but in the end decided he looked like a flamboyant, ostentatious fellow, who'd definitely be bold with his colour choices lol
-
Definitely a good choice. As Pattus Magnus already wrote, a beautiful work!
-
That guy looks incredible! One of the last of the "I hold my arms out to intimidate you, not at all because it's easier to cast!" generation. Nice work!

Big "I am Cornholio" energy lol

I put the finishing touches on a few gribbly beasties over the weekend. These Wargames Atlantic spiders make great Gigantic Spiders for Warhammer Quest, mainly because they fit quite nicely on 40mm bases.
I've painted them to match my smaller spiders (clearly they're tired of the adventurers cleaving through hordes of their babies, and have come to redress the balance).
The rough pattern on the abdomen is inspired by the real life "noble false widow" spiders that live in my garden. A few years ago the regular old garden spiders started disappearing, and these horrible things moved in. Creepy AF... but great inspiration lol
A few details?

And a big shout-out to Ian at Fenris Games for adding more base sizes to his Templar Ruins base range by request, which has really helped this project of late. Now that's service!
-
Very, very nice, if that's the right word lol
-
That is a LOVELY spider...BEAUTIFULLY painted & nicely based! VERY WELL DONE as always!
-
The freehand on the spiders' abdomens is fantastic - truly scary. The rest of the painting is none too shabby either ;)
-
Beautifully done!
-
Fantastically creepy job on the spider.
-
Love the spiders!
-
Thanks all. I just hope I don't draw the Gigantic Spiders card for the dungeon too often, because they give me the creeps lol
Anyhow, a little more progress made on the project. I was looking for a good mini to use for the custom Assassin "hero". I was going to paint up the old Talisman assassin, but he looked too much like a dark elf for my liking. So instead I went for a duellist from Vespero's Vendetta, the old Dogs of War regiment.

Super quick to paint. I love an old Perry miniature, they always have just the right level of detail for tabletop minis IMO.

Fantastic work, as always...even if the spiders are a bit freaky to look at (in the best possible way).
-
Woha, impresive topic !!!
On the latest paintings, I really love what you did with the spiders, bravo.
-
Great work all around! I always wanted one of those Vespero's Vendetta guys, he looks awesome!
I agree completely on the Perry brothers' sculpting- they hit a great balance of detail and paintability. These days some that I think have that balance pretty well in the fantasy realm (the Perry twins are still plugging away at awesome miniatures in the historical realm) are the Frostgrave and Oathmark metals from Northstar- very characterful without having so many little details to be a burden to paint.

Exactly this. I do have some of the Frostgrave plastics, which are great fun for kit-bashing. I know it's picky of me, but the only thing that puts me off is the big integral bases. On the plastics it's no big deal to chop them off, but some of the metal minis have these big chunky discs moulded solidly to the feet, and it seems like a chore to make them fit the rest of my collection.

Perhaps not the most exciting update, but I finally managed to finish the last two Squig Hoppers I needed. This was to correct an earlier mistake - I thought I only needed D3+1 Squig Hoppers for the dungeon, and bought a sprue of 5 off eBay. Turns out I actually needed D6, so I had to buy a single figure (very galling, as they're no longer such a good deal at that point). Anyhow, they are done, ready to BOING all over our brave party of adventurers over the holidays lol

They look so shiny and pointy! Wonderful work.

Been a little while since the last update. We had a lengthy break from our campaign over the Christmas & New Year period, but gaming is about to pick up again. I've realised that I don't have enough Skaven or Chaos Dwarfs once our party levels up, so my painting table is crawling with rats right now!
Just a quick update this time, with a test colour scheme for my Stormvermin. I think I'm going to do 6 like this, with mostly red armour, and another 6 with varying amounts of rusty metal for contrast.

I quite like these old two-part metals. The faces aren't so great tbh, but hey: I have loads of them in storage, so it sure beats paying ebay prices for the more recent updates!
-
Those are great -- I would be quite content with them, too. I agree...the red looks awesome for their armor. And I like the way you do the blade of the pole arm, too.
Mike Demana
-
That red armour looks great, a lovely paintjob.
-
Six of those lads'll go down a treat on the table! Great work, as always.
-
Beautiful work. Love the vesperos vendetta guy. You are definitely right about the perry's with the right amount of detail.
-
Thanks guys!
Those Stormvermin are still on the painting table - I'm not a fan of batch painting, so every time I get a bit bored I tend to throw paint onto a different model to break it up a bit. Using this method, I just finished a Chaos Dwarf Sorcerer Lord. I don't know about you, but I think his hat is a little too modest. He could've gone bigger lol

That hat's slightly bigger than he is! Must be a low-ranked fellow. lol
He looks brilliantly vibrant, great work!

Loving the Chaos Dwarf - I had an army of them a looooong time ago. Long time.

Thanks guys!
I slogged my way through the Skaven Stormvermin at last! 12 of the blighters now complete.

Great work!
That Chaos Dwarf's outfit makes me laugh- if being a sorcerer doesn't work out he could be in a hair metal band or something. Wanted: Tailor. Must be able to sew copious numbers of lightning bolts. Ability to communicate clearly with hatter on design language a requirement. Dark Lands only, no remote work.
-
Skaven are excellent, but the Chaos Dwarf is on another level. Absolutely sublime. :-*

nice additions

I've been looking forward to painting these minis for ages - my three favourite Rat Ogre models of all time! The original Boneripper, plus the two Island of Blood plastics (which are way better than the ones GW currently sell - go figure).

Wow, those rat ogres are great! And I'm impressed how Boneripper the First fits with those two models from much later (15 years or so, no? Wasn't Boneripper a 4th edition/mid-90's model and Island of Blood around 2009-2010?).
-

Yep - the OG Boneripper is 1994 I think. Island of Blood was 2010. I guess even the IoB set is dated now, but it still looks great and the kits are an absolute dream. Back in the day, Rat Ogres had a certain look about them, and Boneripper was the first to break the mold and have that cobbled-together mutant sort of look. The Island of Blood Rat Ogres went down that same route, being much more individual in appearance, which is why I think these three work together despite the age difference.
-
Those rat ogres look a treat! Did you have any problems with gaps on the IoB ones? I remember hearing about some gaps here and there when they were new.
-
Those really look good. I am not too big a fan of GW's current designs, as they are overly detailed and look like digital designs / to stylised. These Ogres, especially the oldest one, have significantly more soul.
The painting is top notch. Contrast, smoothness, the subtle OSL on the warpstone. Great skin tones, too. All in all some of the best Slaven paint jobs I have seen in a while.

Thanks so much, too kind! Really enjoyed these ones.

The joins between sections are a bit too obvious, that's true. Most of them are hidden along sharp edges, like straps, armour and fur for example, but some were really noticeable. I used green stuff on the bigger gaps, and Vallejo plastic putty on the thinner ones. Nothing compare to the average metal model to be honest! I did miss a couple though, which I only noticed when I started base coating. Nobody else will notice or care, but they annoy me regardless lol

And we're back, with more Skaven. Six Assassins (or Gutter Runners I suppose). I really like these models - I believe two of the sculpts were released for Mordheim, while the rest are a bit older.

I feel like the quality of my photos has dipped in the last year or so. My DSLR camera is showing its age a bit in terms of its focusing, and my mini lightbox isn't as... erm... light as it used to be. I swapped out my old shiny cyan backdrop for a super-matte one, but I think it's absorbing too much light and is making the photos overall darker.
If anyone has any recommendations for cheap-but-effective photography gear (even a decent lightbox) I'd appreciate it!
-
Sneaky, stabby, superb.
-
Love those gutter runner/assassins! Great job!
I'm not professional photographer (though I work in a field that has a lot of similar stuff going on, so I can sort of speak to what's going on... sort of), and if you saw my miniature pictures you'd quickly realize I just point my phone at the minis and hope for the best, but here's some things I'd try (sort of a "what would I do if I had the patience to take good pictures" approach):
- not sure how robust your set up is, but is there any way to get more light sources into the light box (ie, add strips of LEDs? or if you have a matching color light bulb on a lamp or something, have it just out of frame directing more light into the box)?
- try to shoot at the native ISO of your camera as long as that allows enough light in in your circumstance. Most DSLRs now have a histogram that you can turn on to show you how well exposed the image is overall. If it's still too dark you can bump up the ISO but that may introduce graininess.
- open your aperture all the way as long as it's not blowing out part of the image that you care about (ie, if there are blown out highlights on the miniature itself it's too much)
- if you're using a zoom lens, zoom all the way in and get your focus sharp there on something like the face (manual focus), then back off to the composition you like- using a shorter lens will give you a bit more depth of field which should cover the whole miniature
- you could try swapping the blue backdrop for a white one to bounce more light back
- if it still looks too dark, you can fiddle with the image in post production (depending on how much you want to go down that rabbit hole and what software you have or want to get into), from the broad strokes of boosting the exposure (usually that is available on any free photo software that's probably already on your computer) to more finesse-ish stuff like using "luma curves" to adjust brightness values at different levels across the image relative to one another and adjusting the "floors" or the maxiumum and minimum values of white and black in the image.
Hope that's helpful! (I should probably mention that I think your photos look great and are way better than mine, so you, know, take it with a grain of salt or what have you) Keep up the good work!
-
Love all these latest skaven. Assassins and rat ogres are definitely the most interesting of them (maybe the plague bearers too)
-

Useful tips there, I appreciate it. Some of those things I already do. I have just invested in a better lightbox with reflectors, and I've ordered some mini fill lights just in case. I think I might need a new camera at some point, but decent DSLRs are pretty expensive, and I need to find something that's compatible with all the very expensive lenses I've collected over the years. You know, until I started looking into this over the last couple of weeks, I had no idea that DSLR cameras have a lifespan based on the average number of shutter exposures they make. So my camera has a lifespan of around 300,000 clicks, and as its 15 years old, I'm guessing it's on death's door lol
-

Yeah- again, I'm no expert, (and sorry to go more on a tangent) but if you look at second-hand cameras, a seller who knows what they're doing will tell you how many exposures they've had, and any other cycle information on the camera's life, so you can judge roughly how much money you'd save for how much life of the camera. - End of tangent, I promise!
Keep up the good work!
-
I feel like every time I post some classic metal minis on here, I have to moan a bit about how they weren't as enjoyable to paint as I expected. Well, these were no exception lol lol lol

Now what I will say is that these models take a "deliberately messy" style quite well. Basecoat, heavy wash all over, quick highlight, then lots of rust and weathering. I think if I'd tried to get a really nice, clean finish on them I'd have gone mad.
A few more Skaven to come, then I think I need a break from the ratties for a while!
(If anyone's following the saga, my camera is definitely on its last legs, but I've been tinkering around with exposure settings, shutter speeds and all that gubbinz, and I think I've squeezed a bit more life out of the old dog...)
-
These look great!
I have similarly mixed feelings about painting old metal miniatures! On the one hand they are heftier, which I like, and there's a nostalgia factor, and they were certainly more detailed than their contemporary plastic models (especially the one-piece castings with no undercut areas- Talisman, WHB 4th Edition, etc.). On the other hand I find that sometimes just getting the paint into all of the nooks and crannies is a real chore (chains or torn clothes often have little specs of metal or primer showing), and the paint will sometimes chip off the edges before I even have a chance to varnish them (which doesn't seem to save the edges anyway). But what can I say? I like them all. Metal, plastic, what have you- it's all good fun.
Thanks for posting and good to hear the camera is still working!
-
They might not have been a joy to paint but they certainly look good! I can’t see anywhere that doesn’t look right.
-
I like the crisp detail of metals and the ability to dry brush a pattern on them easily. With 3-D print, you have to worry about a dry brush or wash picking out print lines. With plastic, the detail is often not crisp enough to do an easy dry brush...

Exactly this. The old skool charm of the metal miniatures keep me coming back to them - and don't even talk to me about chipping lol lol

They might be fiddly to paint, but you did a great job with 'em!

AWAKEN, O THREAD!
I got some more stuff painted. I know! And this time it's not Skaven. Sorry if anyone was waiting on some more ratties, but I honestly got a bit tired of them so decided to switch things up.
Long-time followers of this thread may recall that way back on page 4 (TEN WHOLE FREAKING YEARS AGO!) I painted a single, solitary Troll. Here he is:
Well, now that I'm playing regularly, and we have a party of Level 4 adventurers, we need three Trolls. So the time finally came to climb into the attic and dig out his two buddies. GW released three of these "Common Trolls" back then - a blister pack of two metal ones, and very slightly smaller plastic one in the Battle for Skull Pass Warhammer starter set. They never made any more, so thankfully I bought all three at the time.
The biggest challenge with these guys was that none of the paints I used on the original Troll are in production anymore, and I don't have any left, so even though I actually wrote down the recipe, it didn't serve me terribly well. Thankfully, with the aid of some online conversion charts I managed to get "close enough". I also seem to have improved as a painter in the last ten years, but I really didn't want to start sprucing up old models that are perfectly fine, so instead I slightly "dumbed down" my painting to make them match the OG. I think I have a real OCD issue... lol
Anyhoo, here's the new big metal guy:

Thanks Mike! I really like that model, but he doesn't fit this particular project stylistically. I think he'd fit in well with the old-skool fantasy / LOTR-style games I'm planning though. Definitely one to bookmark.
For Warhammer Quest, I actually caved on the recent Old World releases and pre-ordered three of the classic metal Stone Trolls. I love them, but it was eye-watering paying current GW prices lol
-
those globadiers are my favourite skaven minis. They look great. Trolls are very nice too.
-
Two updates in two weeks? Come on, it's like the old days!
I squeezed in an extra Warrior. Actually, I didn't intend to use this model as as a Warhammer Quest hero initially. I bought him on a whim on a visit to Warhammer World, and then decided that Josef Bugman would be the ideal - no, the ONLY - choice for the unofficial Dwarf Brewmaster Warrior.
A while back, I purchased a resin print Brewmaster from Etsy, which came with two optional scenic bases, representing a ruined Dwarf brewery. When I tried the OG Bugman on the resin base, it was a perfect fit. So, even though it means he's based differently from my other models, I decided it was fate, and couldn't resist. (I actually tried triple-pinning him so I could transfer him from regular base to display base, but it just didn't hold up to gaming, and so I bit the bullet and glued him down.
Rear view - the only real pop of colour on this guy is the shield, so I spent a lot of time on it.

Hope you like!

Great work! Wow, his eyes and his face are really amazing- several drinks in, but still clear eyed enough to clobber goblins. Very impressive!

Lovely work! The face & beard are ace!
cheers

Had a great game of Warhammer Quest last night, using the Lair of the Orc Lord rules. I managed to get Growler the Cave Squig painted up for the game. He appeared right at the end of the game, and sadly didn't put up too much of a challenge - I don't think Orcs & Goblins are much of a threat at the mid-level mark tbh. Still, a fun game, and these special characters from Lair have some really characterful rules.
Can I pet that Dawg?

Fun game the other day. We tried out a fully themed Lair of the Orc Lord adventure. I think the only downside is that the difficulty really doesn't scale well - Greenskins suffer a lot against even a level 3 party, and in hindsight I think we should have used Big Boss stats for Gorgut. Still, it was nice to complete a dungeon without being almost killed in every room for a change lol
Also got to use Growler for the first time since I painted him. He actually scored the biggest hit against the party in the whole game, but then got one-shotted by the Wizard, as is usually the case with dangerous gribblies.

Beautiful photos from the game! Thanks for sharing.

Cheers!
Having a regular gaming group to play this with after all these years has really made a difference. I'm much more motivated now to paint models so we can have themed dungeons (hence my recent Skaven push, and now the Orcs and Goblins frenzy).

Looking great there mate!

Just want to say that this is one of the very best threads on the internet. Thanks for posting! Such a great collections & really terrific painting.

Thank you so much. I've maintained this thread for well over a decade, because this really is my life-long pet project. I've had some great support and convos here over the years, which keeps me motivated to paint more!

And another Orc is done! The classic metal Gorgut means that all the character models for Lair of the Orc Lord are now finished. I'm currently painting up a few more Orcs to use as Big 'Uns, then I think I'll start painting some more undead so we can play through the Catacombs of Terror.

And the rear view, although I decided to go for a plain colour on the cloak. I went for purple not just because it seemed like the logical contrasting colour, but because I figured Gorgut would want a regal cloak because he thinks he's da king!

(These photos came out a bit *too* good... Now I've spotted some mistakes that I'll have to go back and fix. Curses! lol )

Great work!
Unfortunately our Gorgut lost his sword in favor of a bolt pistol during a period when one of my brothers and I thought we were going to have enough orks to play 40k- that army never got anywhere near the size needed to fight a handful of space marines, so it was a bit of a bust (and a prime candidate for the "regrettable conversions" thread I still haven't started). I'll have to see if I can find him and salvage him for some proper questing... must be in a box somewhere...

Positively lovely work on the horns!

Fantastic work on the boss

Positively lovely work on the horns!
I was a bit worried about the horns, because I've never done the reverse scheme before (light at the base, dark at the tip). I always thought it looked more realistic, but for some reason found it trickier to paint. I think I finally cracked it though!

Actual work in progress shot. This is a colour test for a bunch of Ghosts (actually "Nighthaunt Chainrasps" from GW, which is a daft name IMO but hey-ho). With thanks to Juan Hidalgo for the recipe - his ghosts and ethereal metal tutorials formed the basis of this colour scheme. Very happy with this, so I think I'll go ahead and paint the whole group this colour.

I'm particularly pleased with the ghostly OSL effect on those Fenris temple bases. Having the resin details makes it really easy to wash, glaze and highlight.

EDIT: Forgot to share my 'head canon' about how the ghosts work. I figured that the Necromancers use skulls from the catacombs to bring spirits back into being. So the skull is a physical object, as are the chains and weapons that get bound to them when they appear. I was inspired by Gunther Larenscheld from way back at the start of this thread, with his penchant for skull-fondling:

Plus this excellent board tile from Catacombs of Terror:

That's fantastic! Very ghostly looking. :o

Very nice! Those skelli-ghosts (why didn't they call them that, I wonder?) are some of the AoS models that have always tempted me, not to get into AoS, but to find ways of using those models in our games. Great paint job!
-
The top flight work continues. Great stuff.
-
Great work, but I feel like I could've gone my whole life without reading the phrase, 'skull fondling.' lol
-
I always knew there was something off about that Larenscheld guy. Great work!
-
The ghosts are coming along nicely, but as I had a bunch of almost-completed Orcs on my painting table, I thought I'd set aside the skull-fondling (lol) for a bit and get the greenskins finished.
So here we are: 6 Orc Big 'Uns (well, they're just two-part plastic Boyz, but they look big and menacing!)

I have changed my style a little since I painted the first batch of Orcs ages ago (literally over a decade, way back in the first couple of pages of this thread!). Since I painted those Savage Orcs recently, I really like the brighter green skin tones, so I'm going with it hereafter. It does irk me (or should that be "ork" me?) a little, but rule of cool applies.
-
They look great!
-
And not far behind the Big Uns come two metal models. Completely random additions just because they were in the same box. However, the rules for Warhammer Quest call for the addition of Orc Bosses (low-level champions) to accompany the Boyz, so that's what I'll be using these for.
I painted them in exactly the same way as the Big Uns to save time.
This one was originally an Orc Bully, who used to be sold as part of a war machine crew to keep the goblins in check. I love this grizzled veteran with his pegleg and eye patch!

And this "Orc Raider with Torch" was a mail order exclusive many moons ago. I can almost see an alternate universe in which he's an adventurer. If I had infinite time maybe I'd flip the game on its head and have a party of baddies battling through an Empire village to steal their livestock lol

More great painting, and I love those (now classic) models!

- that sounds like a very fun game! And if playing as Orcs I imagine there could be a fun and lore-appropriate competitive/cooperative tension where you need to work together to make it out alive, but you really want to beat the other guys (maybe literally) as well.

Let's squeeze in one more update before LAF goes down for maintenance.
I finished the ghosts ("Nighthaunt Chainrasps" or whatever). Thoroughly enjoyed painting these, and considering I just winged it with a very quick (and slapdash lol) approach, I'm pleased with how the lighting effect on the bases turned out.
The models themselves are spindly and hella fragile, so I'm not sure they'll stand up to the rigors of the gaming table. We shall see!

Lovely stuff! Those orcs look great

These are all excellent. I particularly like the peg-leg fellow.
If I ever get my dungeon crawl finished, one of my expansions was absolutely going to be "baddies as heroes", with a completely inverted encounter deck - all being palace guards, dwarves, elves, etc.
